One of the biggest reasons to replace your home's windows is to improve the overall energy efficiency of your home. But how do you compare the energy efficiency among differing window products? Look at the labels.
Windows that feature an Energy Star label have passed standards tests that prove that the products meet minimum criteria for energy efficiency. Energy Star-rated products typically cost more than traditional products, but also offer great energy savings in reduced utility bills. Another energy efficiency indicator on new window products is a label from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). The NFRC is a non-profit organization that independently assesses and issues energy ratings for window products.
NFRCs testing of window energy performance is also a key component of Energy Star ratings. According to the Council, window products that carry the NFRC label have been tested to ensure that their advertised energy-efficiency claims are accurate.
Window energy efficiency terms
NFRC labels carry important information about a windows energy performance, which are expressed in two primary efficiency measures.
1. Solar heat gain co-efficient (SHGC)
SHGC indicates how much heat from sunlight a window can block. Expressed as number between 0 and 1, the lower a windows SHGC rating, the more heat from sunlight it can block. For instance a window with a SHGC of 0.35 will allow more heat to pass through the window than a product with a SHGC of 0.27.

And the business manager of Seven Days is still waiting for a call back about medical insurance from the IT department at Vermont Health Connect.

But in the spirit of alternative journalism, our reporters are always on the lookout for stories that no other media outlet is reporting. Why are some Asian massage places open at all hours of the night even in far-flung corners of Vermont? Ken Picard conducted a simple investigation and turned up glaring evidence of human trafficking and uncaring cops in our own backyard.
Also from the police blotter: Officers in Winooski and Burlington opened fire on suspects, with results that ranged from alarming to tragic; and a pissed-off artist succeeded in shaming the Shelburne 5-0.
Some Seven Days stories played out in the political realm, as lawmakers gave terminal patients the right to seek a doctors help to die; officials kicked hate groups out of the state employee charitable pool; and Champlain Valley superintendents heard loud and clear that parents want school out for summer.
Other stories sprang up from the grass roots, as volunteers launched a farm to make goat meat available to the newest group of Americans; entrepreneurs built a wind-powered barge to bring Vermont farm products to the Big Apple; and residents of Jericho and Underhill tried to resolve their feud over what to do with a sweet gift of land.

Jan 30: In June 2012, a 3-year-old boy attending the Ed-U-Care Childrens Center in Essex Junction walked off the premises and into heavy traffic on Susie Wilson Road. Luckily, a passing motorist pulled him out of harms way. A subsequent investigation by Vermonts Child Development Division found that daycare staffers never alerted authorities that the boy had gone missing, as required by law. The state cited the center, but allowed it to remain open and licensed.

Julien Guignard shovels off the step of the residence of a senior couple in a free service he is providing this winter.
Inspired by something he read on Facebook, Julien Guignard is offering a free shovelling service to seniors in Stephenville.
Guignard said he read how times are tough for some seniors and that it gets expensive for them to get steps and walkways shovelled, if they are able to get someone to do it at all.
The 16-year-old decided he was going to provide that service free of charge when hes available to do it after school hours, and got his mom Patti Guignard to do up some small posters and put them out around at different locations.
In the meantime, he and his mom have been driving around Stephenville and looking for people who need help. Theyve done a few places, including some shovelling of the step and porch area at the Animal Shelter in Stephenville, a couple of places at the seniors complex located on New Mexico Drive and at an elderly ladies house on their own street, St. Clare Avenue.
Since putting out the posters, theyve even received several calls from Alberta, with sons and daughters asking them to look out for their moms property.
Its a big worry for people who are away and have parents here but no other family, Patti said.
She hopes more people will call and take advantage of the free service Julien is providing, that she helps him out with.
She thinks its a great thing hes doing and they plan to do it all winter.
