Snow slows restoration of power in Maine, Mich.

    - December 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

GARDINER, Maine - By Thursday, Bob and Katrina Johnson had grown weary of lugging around a portable generator to prevent a freezer-load of moose meat from spoiling and to keep Katrina's mother's home warm.

The Maine couple spent Christmas Eve at a family member's home without electricity. Christmas morning found them at their own home without power. And to complete their holiday, they traveled to a third darkened home to exchange gifts that afternoon.

"You have to go with the flow and adapt, and do the best you can," Katrina Johnson said Thursday, before their power was finally restored. "You learn how to deal with it. Do you like it? No, but you deal with it."

Utility officials said it could be days longer before power is restored to everyone after a weekend ice storm that turned out the lights from Michigan to Maine and into Canada.

People shivered for a seventh day as a new storm blew through the upper Midwest and Northeast, shutting down part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike after a pileup involving 35 vehicles. Ten people were taken to the hospital with injuries from the crash. Another pileup on Interstate 78 in eastern Pennsylvania involving 25 to 30 vehicles sent 25 people to hospitals.

So far, authorities blame the storm for 27 deaths -- 17 in the U.S. and 10 in Canada, including five who apparently died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Public health officials are reminding people to leave portable generators outside their homes and garages and away from any windows, reports CBS News correspondent Terrell Brown.

In Michigan, where about half a million homes and businesses lost power at the storm's peak, utilities reported that 103,000 customers remained without power Thursday evening and said it could be Saturday before all electricity is restored.

In Maine, more snow added to the misery for utility crews working long hours in eastern Maine and parts of the state's interior.

Most utility customers in Maine were expected to have their lights on by week's end, but there were some pockets where damage was so severe it could take until Wednesday.

OUR CARIBBEAN: Cabinet change coming in face of rising gloom

    - December 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

AMID THE enchanting music, traditional delicious West Indian dishes and family gatherings this Christmas week, there prevails a mood of uncertainty across Barbados about its future social and economic progress.

It is a mood spawned largely by a combination of the impending retrenchment of thousands of public sector workers and continuing downgrades by international rating agencies on the countrys economic performance with dim prospects for change in the short term.

The depressing mood is lending itself to various speculative scenarios, not the least being an expected cabinet reshuffle to be announced by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart either in his coming New Years message to the nation or shortly thereafter.

While heads of government generally delight in mocking speculation about impending cabinet changes, there are increasing reports of a now inevitable cabinet reshuffle as one of the significant political initiatives to be pursued by the Prime Minister within the first quarter of 2014.

The Cabinet changes are expected to include replacement of controversial Finance Minister Chris Sinckler by Minister of Agriculture Dr David Estwick, as well as the appointment of what has long been absent from Mr Stuarts administration a Deputy Prime Minister. Current thinking suggests that this portfolio is most likely to be allotted to Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy.

With a parliamentary majority of merely two in the 30-member House of Assembly, Prime Minister Stuart can be expected to be most careful in his options for changes in ministerial portfolios.

Meanwhile, though not targeted with persistent negative ratings from international agencies, as is currently the case for Barbados, various other countries in the Eastern Caribbean region continue to be plagued by slow and even negative economic growth, as recurring challenges surface to threaten social stability amid rising unemployment and gun-related criminality.

In this context the Caribbean Communitys governments would be anxious to receive the report from the Caribbean Growth Forum (CGF) on the way forward for 2014. Launched in May last year in Washington, the CFG is a combined initiative of the World Bank, IMF, Inter-American Development Bank, Caribbean Development Bank and the University of the West Indies.

While we await the major recommendations from the CFG, it is important for the regions people to learn of the progress, if any, made to operationalize a CARICOM Economic Commission as unanimously decided at last July annual Heads of Government Conference in Port of Spain.

The commissions terms of reference require it to address the priority areas for regional fiscal sustainability and resource mobilization as well as critical infrastructural services, particularly in energy and information communication technology.

Locker rooms at JCC South Hills closed for remodeling

    - December 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Locker rooms at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh in Scott will be closed for renovations in the first three months of the New Year, but the swimming room, gymnasium and all other wellness and fitness facilities will remain open and operating.

The $500,000 project is funded by a county grant and with donations from supporters of the JCC.

A grant from the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County will be administered by Allegheny County Economic Development.

Improvements to the mens and womens locker rooms include replacing the floors with slip-resistant green tile. There will be new walls, ceilings, lighting, lockers and benches as well as plumbing upgrades. Drains will be added to the locker room area. Safety bars and bathing suit spinners will also be added.

The JCC applied for the county grant and qualified "because of the size of the community we serve," said Dan Garfinkel, director of the JCC South Hills branch. "We try to never turn away anyone because of need. Last year we provided over $2 million" in assistance.

Renovations are expected to begin Jan. 6 and continue for 12 weeks through the end of March.

About 1,000 members regularly use the wellness and fitness facilities, plus 2,500 members of the Silver Sneakers senior fitness program for people 65 years old and older.

Because of the locker room renovations, a shower has been installed at the 25-yard, six-lane indoor heated pool, which is used by JCC members as well as 40 members of the Tidal Waves Swim Team, for students in grade school through high school, Mr. Garfinkel said.

Members working out in other facilities can use the regular restroom for changing, or are welcome to use the JCC in Squirrel Hill.

Built in 1999, the Jewish Community Center "houses comprehensive fitness and wellness facilities," the news release says. In addition to the swimming pool, there is a double-court gym and an accessible outdoor playground.

Tim Leeper Roofing Awards Middle Tennessee Homeowner With New Roof in Time for the Holidays

    - December 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) December 26, 2013

Margaret Lowe will be able to enjoy a warm and dry home this holiday thanks to her new roof from Tim Leeper Roofing. The Waverly, Tennessee resident was voted the winner by the Middle Tennessee community after sharing her story for Leepers Roof Giveaway contest.

Unaware that she had even been entered into the contest, Lowe saw her name in the list of the 10 finalists and thought it was just coincidence. After her daughter confirmed that she had entered her into the contest, Lowe thought actually winning wouldnt happen. I was joyful and happy and in disbelief, she says.

Lowe left her long-time nursing career due to health issues, leaving her finances tight and her roof on a long list of things to fix. Her 20 year old roof was rotten and damaged in areas that have caused leaks within her home.

I knew the roof was in bad shape when I went into the lower part of the house and I had water running down the base of the wall, Lowe says. When it rained, I really knew I was in trouble.

Aside from financial challenges, Lowes family has experienced the loss of her husband, son and grandson in the past year. Yet, she sees the roof as a positive turn in spite of the tough year behind her.

Tim Leeper, owner of Tim Leeper Roofing, created the Roof Giveaway contest as simply a way to pay it forward to someone in his community. In November, he called on Middle Tennessee residents to share the stories of their family, friends and neighbors to help him find a homeowner in need of a new roof for the holidays. Ten households were chosen to share their story via video to be posted on Tim Leeper Roofings Facebook page and voted on by the community. Over 1600 votes were cast and Margaret Lowe was awarded the grand prize.

I was thankful to know I had that many people who cared about me and my family friends and Facebook friends, friends from high school days, even people from out of state. It was nothing short of a miracle, Lowe says of surprising number of Facebook likes her video received.

Tim Leeper Roofing is locally owned and operated and has provided quality roofing services to the Nashville area for nearly 10 years. Leeper is also an avid supporter of his community and non-profit organizations with events such as the Roof Giveaway contest and Music City Guitar Tour, an event that supports local non-profits with cash prizes and guitars signed by famous musicians and celebrities.
