Locker rooms at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh in Scott will be closed for renovations in the first three months of the New Year, but the swimming room, gymnasium and all other wellness and fitness facilities will remain open and operating.

The $500,000 project is funded by a county grant and with donations from supporters of the JCC.

A grant from the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County will be administered by Allegheny County Economic Development.

Improvements to the mens and womens locker rooms include replacing the floors with slip-resistant green tile. There will be new walls, ceilings, lighting, lockers and benches as well as plumbing upgrades. Drains will be added to the locker room area. Safety bars and bathing suit spinners will also be added.

The JCC applied for the county grant and qualified "because of the size of the community we serve," said Dan Garfinkel, director of the JCC South Hills branch. "We try to never turn away anyone because of need. Last year we provided over $2 million" in assistance.

Renovations are expected to begin Jan. 6 and continue for 12 weeks through the end of March.

About 1,000 members regularly use the wellness and fitness facilities, plus 2,500 members of the Silver Sneakers senior fitness program for people 65 years old and older.

Because of the locker room renovations, a shower has been installed at the 25-yard, six-lane indoor heated pool, which is used by JCC members as well as 40 members of the Tidal Waves Swim Team, for students in grade school through high school, Mr. Garfinkel said.

Members working out in other facilities can use the regular restroom for changing, or are welcome to use the JCC in Squirrel Hill.

Built in 1999, the Jewish Community Center "houses comprehensive fitness and wellness facilities," the news release says. In addition to the swimming pool, there is a double-court gym and an accessible outdoor playground.

Margaret Lowe will be able to enjoy a warm and dry home this holiday thanks to her new roof from Tim Leeper Roofing. The Waverly, Tennessee resident was voted the winner by the Middle Tennessee community after sharing her story for Leepers Roof Giveaway contest.

Unaware that she had even been entered into the contest, Lowe saw her name in the list of the 10 finalists and thought it was just coincidence. After her daughter confirmed that she had entered her into the contest, Lowe thought actually winning wouldnt happen. I was joyful and happy and in disbelief, she says.

Lowe left her long-time nursing career due to health issues, leaving her finances tight and her roof on a long list of things to fix. Her 20 year old roof was rotten and damaged in areas that have caused leaks within her home.

I knew the roof was in bad shape when I went into the lower part of the house and I had water running down the base of the wall, Lowe says. When it rained, I really knew I was in trouble.

Aside from financial challenges, Lowes family has experienced the loss of her husband, son and grandson in the past year. Yet, she sees the roof as a positive turn in spite of the tough year behind her.

Tim Leeper, owner of Tim Leeper Roofing, created the Roof Giveaway contest as simply a way to pay it forward to someone in his community. In November, he called on Middle Tennessee residents to share the stories of their family, friends and neighbors to help him find a homeowner in need of a new roof for the holidays. Ten households were chosen to share their story via video to be posted on Tim Leeper Roofings Facebook page and voted on by the community. Over 1600 votes were cast and Margaret Lowe was awarded the grand prize.

I was thankful to know I had that many people who cared about me and my family friends and Facebook friends, friends from high school days, even people from out of state. It was nothing short of a miracle, Lowe says of surprising number of Facebook likes her video received.

It shows you how many great sports stories we had in 2013 that perfection ranks number 9 on our list. Let's head back to May 17th, when Kellen Bates once again proved no one in Montana could hang with him on the court.

With one final ace, Kellen Bates wrapped up an undefeated high school tennis career, and instantly felt the pressure lift off his shoulders.

"I was just happy the way I played that last match," said the 4-year state champion from Glacier High after he beat Hellgate's Dylan Harvala in the title match 6-2, 6-1. "It will take a while to sink in all the accomplishments I've done here in high school tennis. But I was just glad to get that last match."

Bates domination of the Treasure State high school court started on day one. He cruised through the bracket for a state championship as a freshman. And ended up 61-0 while playing for the Wolfpack, only dropping two total sets in four years. Bates showed improvement every season, but he felt his senior year was by far the toughest.

"I'd go out there and I'd put a little too much pressure on myself and make matches a little too hard on myself. And then I would play tight," said Bates. "And other years, especially my freshman year, I felt like I could just go out there, swing for the fences, and have a good time."

Bates is running out of room to display all of his trophies. But the newest additions might be his favorite. For the first time, he helped bring home two state championships.

"I guess I could put this year as the most special one since I was able to win a state championship singularly, and then capture one as a team," he said. "It will be pretty cool to look back on in a couple years. It's pretty special."

Bates is currently playing at Indiana University. But he wasn't the only 4-time state champ this Spring. Bridger Walczynski of Corvallis claimed a Class A doubles title every year in high school. He teamed up with three different partners, including DJ Pekoc the last two years. On May 25th, he left the court as a winner one last time.

"Started off a little slow. Cold morning. Didn't really wake up very well," said Walczynski after the clinching victory in Polson. "But by the second set we were clicking and everything was just working. Being a senior and knowing that my season and career is done in high school is the hard part. But knowing I went out like this is a great feeling."

Tomorrow we will feature numbers 8 and 7 on our countdown of the top 2013 sports stories in Western Montana. Both involve long-distance runners breaking records.

From inventing low-cost devices to innovative ways of helping make math and science easy for students, meet three Indian Americans pushing the boundaries.

In the first part of a three-part series beginning today, Suman Guha Mozumder speaks to 18-year old Saumil Bandyopadhyay who was named a recipient of the second annual American Ingenuity Awards by Smithsonian magazine, the flagship publication of Smithsonian Media, for a unique, sensitive infrared radiation detector.

MIT freshman Saumil Bandyopadhyay was named a recipient of the second annual American Ingenuity Awards by Smithsonian magazine, the flagship publication of Smithsonian Media, for a unique, sensitive infrared radiation detector that promises to be inexpensive and has scientific, civilian and military applications.

The device being developed by Saumil, 18, has already attracted the interest of the United States Army, which has taken him to work in one of its engineering laboratories.

Saumil is one of the 10 groundbreaking individuals honoured with the American Ingenuity Awards across categories including technology, performing and visual arts, natural and physical sciences, education, historical scholarship, social progress and youth achievement.

The honourees were recognised at an awards gala at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, November 19; in Smithsonian magazines special Ingenuity Awards December issue; and on Smithsonian.com.

While their work is different in objective, each winner is embracing the Smithsonians mission to increase knowledge and shape the world of tomorrow, Michael Caruso, editor in chief, Smithsonian magazine, was quoted as saying.

As a toddler, Saumil used to be taken to his father Supriyo Bandyopadhyays office in the Virginia Commonwealth University, where the elder Bandyopadhyay has been a professor of electrical engineering and computer engineering.

As a 2-year-old, even before he could speak, Saumil started doing additions and subtractions with apples or tennis balls, his father said.

He skipped developmental stages in the sense he started from sitting to standing and then walking. He never crawled, Bandyopadhyay said, recalling that his sons childhood development was in fits and starts.

At 18, he helps US Army with unique infrared detector

Queens College has seen a renaissance over the last dozen years, with new programs, new buildings, new technology and a new attitude. At the center of these massive changes has been Dr. James Muyskens, who took over as president of the school in July 2002.

Facing many challenges to revitalize the colleges academics, fundraising, culture and student body, Muyskens spearheaded accomplishments like the creation of the colleges first residence hall, the addition of new courses, the hiring of top-tier faculty and the improvement of student outreach.

As he wraps up his time as president, Muyskens talked about his time at Queens College, what led him there and his plans for the future.

Before Queens College

Muyskens was first inspired to get involved in education as a high school student in South Dakota. He had a superb math teacher and thought about becoming one himself. Once he got to college though, he did not find math as challenging and switched to philosophy. Besides setting him on a new educational path, Muyskens college experiences inspired what he wanted to do at Queens College as president.

I went to a small liberal arts college, had an opportunity to interact with the faculty that were teaching me. I really wanted that here, he said. That is one of the truly exciting things about Queens College. Were big, far bigger than the place I went to as an undergraduate, but when we do student satisfaction surveys, right at the top of the list of things that students are happy about is their ability to interact with faculty.

Getting a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Michigan, Muyskens wound up beginning his career in the CUNY system, at Hunter College. Once there, he fell in love with the mission of CUNY, part of which is to provide high-quality, accessible education to students who may otherwise not have had the chance to attend college.

I actually could have gone to more of an elite type of institution, where the students would be more upper-middle class, he said. But to be able to teach students who are the first in their family to go to college and then to make a difference in their lives, that really got me.

After a couple of other jobs, Muyskens was approached by Queens College to become its ninth president. Although he said he was not looking for another job, he was once again drawn in by CUNYs and Queens Colleges mission as well as the opportunities New York City had to offer.
