CARLISLE Sewage no longer fouls Lake Carnico in Nicholas County, thanks to an environmentally friendly project that naturally treats wastewater from nearby households.
But it took 22 years, persistence and patience for local officials to piece together funding, and to have the treatment system designed and built for a total cost of more than $2.7 million, said Denny Gallagher, chairman of the sanitation district that oversees the system's maintenance.
"When I set out to do something, I like it to be done," Gallagher said.
Lake Carnico is a jewel in Nicholas County, a rural county of 26,000 people about an hour north of Lexington. Finished in 1962, the 114-acre reservoir was created by damming several unnamed tributaries to Brushy Fork Creek. Its largemouth bass, flathead catfish, bluegill and crappie attract fishermen from around the region.
Initially people erected weekend fishing cabins around the lake, but as time went on, some 103 single-family houses were built near its five miles of shoreline. Home prices around the lake range from $175,000 to $230,000 or more in a county where the average price for a house is closer to $110,000 to $125,000, said county Property Valuation Administrator Michelle Knapke McDonald. When they're for sale, houses around the lake tend to spend less time on the market than those elsewhere in the county.
For years, homes around the lake were served by aging, failing septic systems or by holding tanks that could be pumped out periodically to dispose the sewage elsewhere.
Trouble was, untreated sewage was finding its way into the lake, and something had to be done to stop it.
"It wasn't polluted, but it wasn't crystal clear, either," Gallagher said of the lake.
Hooking on to Carlisle's sewer system would have been prohibitively expensive. So Nicholas County Sanitation District No. 2 found an alternative: rather than send the sewage to the city, it is treated on site.
That is done with something called a "recirculating gravel filter," said Joe Pavoni, an engineer with GRW, a consulting engineering firm in Louisville.

Sanford Winery has opened a new tasting room in La Arcada at 1114 State Street in Santa Barbara. Sanford chose the arts and entertainment district of upper downtown, with the art museum, the Granada Theatre, and the new public market at Alma Del Pueblo all within a block or two. La Arcadas refined, cobblestone setting seemed the perfect fit for the winerys first tasting room outside of its facilities in the Santa RitaHills.
We are thrilled to join a vibrant community of wine producers represented in Santa Barbaras urban wine trail, Sanford Winemaker and General Manager Steve Fennell said. We love being part of the La Arcada business community and look forward to many years ofsuccess.
Michael Martz of Hayes Commercial Group represented Sanford in leasing the 1,016 sf retail space. While the rapid growth of wine tasting in the Funk Zone is exciting, the team at Sanford determined that La Arcada provides an elegant location that really spoke to their brand and their clientele, Martzsaid.
Sanford planted the first Pinot Noir grapes in Santa Barbara County back in 1971, likening the climate and soil conditions in the Santa Rita Hills to those of Frances famed Burgundy province. The grape has thrived in the area ever since and helped put Santa Barbara County on the map of the worlds premier wine regions. Sanford has also had great success with Chardonnay on its estate vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills, a location that is now officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area. Sanford opened a state-of-the-art tasting room on its premises in 2007, and as the city of Santa Barbara has developed into a hub for wine enthusiasts, it is a logical place for the winerys first off-site tastingroom.
Being a recognizable and world-renowned name, Sanfords tasting room in La Arcada hopes to be a hit with wine connoisseurs, locals, and tourists alike. Michael Martz assisted the Sanford team in their thorough search, viewing spaces in all different areas of Santa Barbara before ultimately deciding on the location in LaArcada.
Sanford didnt want to rush into opening a tasting room just anywhere, Martz explained. They wanted a refined and timeless space that reflects theirlegacy.
The tasting room opened this week. Various tasting flights are available curtailed to the wine lovers preference, in addition to private tastings and wine club opportunities. With Santa Barbaras popular 1st Thursday events, combined with the buzz of new shops and restaurants opening nearby, Sanfords new home in Santa Barbara is right where it wants tobe.

A 90-year-old man fell about 40 feet off a deck, landing on a retaining wall, in Larkspur and was taken to the hospital in serious condition Sunday evening, officials said.
The Larkspur Fire Department got a call at about 6 p.m. from witnesses at a house at 140 Wilson Way "and found the victim where he fell from the house, with injuries including what is believed to be a broken leg," said San Rafael Battalion Chief Jeff Buscher.
"(The firefighters) went down and provided quick patient care," Buscher said. If the man had fallen a few inches to either side, he wouldn't have hit the wall and probably would have fallen another 20 feet, the battalion chief said.
The Corte Madera and Southern Marin fire departments "came to help with the physical rescue of the gentleman" as Buscher set up a command post at the end of the road, he said.
As rescuers provided medical attention to the 90-year-old, other first responders "started cutting a swath through the brush to get an avenue up to him" so a vehicle could reach him on the slope of the hill, Buscher said.
"The captains of the Larkspur companies that arrived first on the scene made good decisions and took action that led to a positive outcome," Buscher said.
Further details related to the man's identity and the cause of the fall were not available.

To ensure your restaurant opens on time and within budget, make sure you have your delivery dates nailed down and align yourself with an experienced restaurant construction firm.
We recently gave a restaurant trade magazine some tips on budgeting for a restaurant construction timeline. While the construction best practices we shared might be common knowledge with our experienced Chicago restaurant construction clients, I realize novice restaurant owners or entrepreneurs opening fast-casual franchise restaurants may not know how to create a successful restaurant construction schedule.
First and foremost, a restaurant construction timeline mainly depends on the following:
As the best restaurant construction firms will tell you, the most common reason construction schedules and budgets increase for a restaurant opening is not due to a commercial construction crisis (such a burst pipe, etc.), but because the restaurant contractor is waiting for delivery of construction materials. The scheduling of deliveries is absolutely crucial in opening a restaurant on time.
Because of this, successful general contractors will make sure independents and novice franchisees are aware of all the processes that go into opening a restaurant before construction even starts.
Note: it is during the restaurant design process when lead times on equipment and finishes are realized. For example, an oven could take six weeks to be delivered, certain wall tiles could take four weeks. As an operator discovers these lead times, he/she will start to prepare the construction timeline based on the delivery of these items. Of course, a restaurant construction contractor can also help owners prepare their delivery schedule.
And it is during the bidding process when the best general contractors will perform exploratory services to see if a roof needs to be replaced, if bathrooms arent up to code or if there are any serious construction demons all of which will affect your commercial construction budget and schedule.
Only after these three processes are done can you actually start building your restaurant. Too often, new restaurant operators rent space before they even hire an architect, which is a costly mistake to a restaurant construction budget and timeline. Restaurant operators could be paying rent on a space that they havent even moved into yet.
One way to avoid paying rent on a restaurant space before you open is to make sure there is verbiage in the lease/contract that says something along the lines of rent to commence within 20 days of opening and here is our projected opening date.

Building a concrete koi pond is a large undertaking that is usually expensive and permanent. It's a job best suited for a hobbyist who understands the needs of koi. Still, many consult with a professional contractor or hire help for some parts of the construction process.
Mark the pond in your yard using string or paint. Include where your filtering equipment will be.
Excavate the area where you will build your pond. If you wish to build an above ground pond, this will be less tedious, but you should still make sure the ground is level.
Place your bottom drains and piping in the bottom of your pond. Many pond experts recommend using a bend connector rather than an elbow connector to connect pipes. This will be less restricting for the water flow.
Put reinforcing bars in the bottom of your pond using bricks to hold the rebar up and in place.
Prepare and pour concrete into the bottom of your pond slowly and evenly. The concrete should be leveled off at a depth of about 6 inches.
Build the walls of your pond using small, solid concrete blocks or large hollow blocks and mortar. Large hollow blocks should be filled with concrete when the walls are complete.
