Storage of colour pellets that were not properly dried and excess quantity of finished and unfinished crackers in the working sheds had reportedly led to the fire accident at the Sri Vijay Pyrotech cracker unit in Anuppankulam near here on Thursday night.

After inspecting the accident site, the Deputy Chief Controller of Explosives (in-charge), R. Venugopal, said that it was a miraculous escape for over 300 employees at the unit as the first explosion took place at 6.40 p.m. after all the workers had left for home. Seventeen working sheds were razed and six partially destroyed in the fire. The licence of the unit was suspended by Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation.

The fire was triggered by heat as the colour pellets, meant for usage in aerial fireworks, were stocked in one of the working sheds in the northwest corner of the factory that had a total of 89 working sheds. The employees had not taken adequate care in stocking the pellets. Those pellets should have been fully dried under the shade before being stocked, Mr. Venugopal said.

Stating that the debris of the concrete buildings was thrown to up to 200 metres, he said such an impact could have been created only by excess stocking of chemicals against the established norms.

As against the permitted quantity of 25 kg of explosives to be stocked in each working shed, we found storage of over 100 kg in many of the sheds, the official said. He also attributed this violation to the flames and incessant bursting of chemicals for over two hours.

PESO has asked the cracker manufacturers belonging to three different associations to form a six-member technical committee to probe three recent accidents at cracker units (including Anuppankulam unit) that were caused by decomposition of fireworks composition. Meanwhile, the Sivakasi East police arrested the factory foreman, S. Selvam (51) of Sivakasi, in connection with the accident. He was charged under Section 286 of Indian Penal Code for negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance and the provisions of Indian Explosive Substances Act.

Equity trading activities on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange closed negative on Friday to halt a two-day rally.

The market capitalisation of the listed equities shed 0.49 per cent or N63bn to close at N12.661tn, compared to an appreciation by 0.96 per cent or N121bn, which saw it close at N12.724tn on Thursday.

Similarly, the NSEs All-Share Index, dropped by 0.49 per cent or 197.68 basis points from 39,760.43 Thursdays close to 39,562.75 basis points.

The NSE-30 Index was down by 0.75 per cent to close at 1,814.93 basis points, from 1,828.70 points recorded the previous day.

A review of the sectoral indices showed that NSE Consumer Goods Index recorded the biggest sectoral loss for the day after it fell by 1.39 per cent or 15.33 basis points to close at 1,081.94 points.

In contrast, the NSE Oil and Gas Index posted the best sectoral performance after it rose by 0.35 per cent or 1.09 basis points to close at 305.04 basis points.

The banking sub-sector maintained its dominance on the activity chart, accounting for 31.18 per cent of total turnover traded.

In the sub-sector, 217.959 million shares, valued at N2.138bn were exchanged by investors in 1,415 transactions.

Volume in the sub-sector was driven by trading in the shares of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated Plc, Unity Bank Plc and United Bank for Africa.

Others that recorded high volume turnover in the sub-sector are Diamond Bank Plc and Access Bank Plc.

Standing in a prominent position on Southwolds East Cliff, the Sailors Reading Room is one of the oldest institutions in the town.

But, despite its long and rich history, the humble red-brick building is often overshadowed by Southwolds more iconic and better-known landmarks such as its pier and lighthouse.

On June 2 next year, the reading room will have been open for 150 years making it 36 years older than the pier and 28 years older than the lighthouse.

To mark this special anniversary, reading room member and its former secretary Doug Pope has written a book celebrating the history of the Grade II listed building, which was founded as a place for sailors and fishermen to meet, read and chat rather than go to the pub for a drink.

The reading room was built on the instructions of the widow of Royal Navy Captain Charles Rayley and constructed by Benjamin Howard Carter, who had a workshop in Victoria Street.

Sharp-eyed visitors will be able to spot the letters and numbers BHC 1861 1 Feb carved into the brickwork.

It is believed the idea for the institution came from the Bible classes held by Charlotte Ellis in a redundant lifeboat house on the beach under the cliff. She was concerned about the spiritual welfare of the sailors and fishermen of Southwold because they did not go to church.

Carson told us, had he not developed a love for reading, his humble upbringing could have been difficult to overcome.

"Between the covers of those books I could go anywhere, I could be anybody, I could do anything. And, I basically left the world of the ghetto and traveled the world through those books," he said.

Carson said what he had in common with everyone were challenges. He told us, while everyone faces adversity, he hoped to be an inspiration of what life could be for kids who felt overwhelmed.

That fighting spirit was not lost on eight year old Hunter Vandusen, His challenge has been living with a hearing impairment.

"How do you like the reading room? Do you like it," Hunter's interpreter, Kelli Todd asked him.

"Yes" Hunter squealed, "This" excitedly pointing to a sign hanging from the ceiling.

"What does that say," Todd asked. "Think big," he said with a smile.

Thinking big, he was. And as far as creating the jungle themed treading room, the teachers thought big too.
