Kite-surfing equipment, power tools and quad bike among items stolen from sheds in Braunton area

Kite-surfing equipment, power tools and a quad bike are just a few of the items stolen from sheds and outbuildings in the Braunton area over the last week.

Police are appealing for witnesses following five burglaries in the last seven days.

Officers said diesel was siphoned from tractors and stolen from other containers at a property in Boode overnight on December 11.

They also said a quad bike was stolen from a shed in Guineaford overnight on December 15 and said kite-surfing equipment was stolen from a shed in Wrafton Road between December 16 and December 18.

Power tools were also taken from two separate sheds in the Ashford area overnight on December 17.

Sergeant Paul Jones, neighbourhood team leader for Ilfracombe and Braunton, said the thefts, which have mostly occurred overnight, may not be linked.

He said: We are appealing for any sightings of unusual vehicles or people acting suspiciously in areas they are not normally expected to be.

I also want to remind people to keep their outbuildings and sheds safely locked and secured.

Anyone who witnessed the burglaries or has any information should contact police on 101, quoting crime reference number CN/13/481.

Drain flies find slimy pipes ideal neighborhood

    - December 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Drain flies (aka moth flies or sewer flies) are a common but relatively harmless pest. Even new homes can have them if the house is hooked up to old pipes.

Adult flies (about the size of the tip of a pencil eraser) usually show up in bathrooms and kitchens emerging from drains. Drain flies make masses of from 30 to 100 eggs, which hatch within two hours of being laid. The larvae live in the thin film of slime that lines your pipes. They feed on the sediment that collects there.

The maggots grow for nine to 15 days, pupate for a day and a half and emerge as adults and start the cycle all over again. You've probably never seen any of the young maggots. The adults, however, are most often observed on the walls of basements, bathrooms, kitchens or other sites where sewer drains and plumbing fixtures are found. They are quite poor fliers and most often hang around drains or other areas where they can have good access. The young live in drain traps, pipes, garbage disposals, toilet tanks, or in wet areas around septic tanks, leaking pipes or sewer lines -- even in wet mops.

Fortunately, despite their preferred choice of residence, the moth fly doesn't pose any particular risk for disease transmission. They don't bite. They're just a general nuisance. However, they may be an indicator of septic or sewer problems that needs to be corrected.

To check for possible breeding sites, you'll need to make an X across each drain with masking tape. You can also use an inverted clear plastic cup sprayed with cooking oil set above the drain. Make certain that you don't completely cover the opening. If you do, there will be no air flow and the flies won't try to emerge. Check the traps periodically. If you find adult flies stuck to the tape or inside of the cup, it's probably the source of your infestation or, at least, one of the sources.

The only way to rid yourself of drain flies is to completely eliminate their food, and that means thoroughly cleaning the drain lines and plumbing fixtures where they might live and breed. Pouring bleach or boiling water down a drain may help to knock down the numbers of immatures. An enzyme or bacterial based drain cleaner can be used to eliminate the gelatinous layer.

The adults can be killed by almost any household insecticide or a good flyswatter (they tend to "puff" when swatted). However, to significantly reduce their numbers for any significant period of time will require your hiring a professional plumber to clean out your pipes.

    Don’t spare the style

    - December 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tired, a little personally neglected and overwhelmed? No, that's not us all, as we struggle with the last minute preparations for Christmas - it's a description of the average spare room.

Around 54% of us have an 'unloved' room in our houses, according to recent research by B&Q, and most often that's the spare.

It's commonly a dumping ground and at the bottom of the list for decor attention, with the result that it ends up groaning with clutter and, style-wise, is way past its sell-by date.

Panic can set in with the impending influx of visitors, but there's still time for a revamp which can transform it into a welcoming space.

"For me, Christmas is all about family and friends coming together and guest bedrooms should always be welcoming, comfortable and cosy," says Jenny Blanc, designer and owner of Jenny Blanc Interiors.

"I often create a small seasonal display with berries, fir cones, dried oranges and holly to decorate the dressing table.

"This year I'll place decorative and scented candles around the room to create a festive glow and on the mantelpiece or window ledge, a small artificial tree, with reindeer, robins, and glass angels to bring a touch of Christmas to the room."

Be inspired by hotel room luxury, she suggests, and as well as choosing classic bedding, decorate the bed with beautiful, plump cushions, and soft cashmere or faux fur throws.

"In the wardrobe, I always make sure there are soft towelling robes, slippers, thick, fluffy towels and bath essences smelling of winter spices, such as pine, orange, bergamot and ginger."

This neglected nook can be saved, and making a few small changes to get it guest-ready could inspire you to lavish further TLC on it later and transform it into a sanctuary you'll love visiting.

Restaurant torn down to make way for Stripes

    - December 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

GATESVILLE A construction contractor began razing a 22-year-old, landmark restaurant to make room for a new Stripes convenience store.

In 1991, Andy Lella opened Andys Restaurant as it continued to be known even after its name changed to The Stockyard Steakhouse at the corner of U.S. Highway 84 and Business 36.

When Gatesville voters legalized the sale of beer and wine in the city last year, the Stripes convenience store chain made Lella an offer for the prime location.

The new store will sell alcoholic beverages, Lella said.

We will open a new Andys Restaurant on Main Street in Gatesville in March, Lella said, although he has not yet decided on the specific location.

The new Andys will be more modern, more efficient and smaller than the original, he said, but will have the same kitchen staff preparing the same menu.

The new restaurant will not serve beer and wine, Lella said.

The old eatery was a popular meeting place for local civic clubs, hungry ranchers, church-goers, bikers, locals and travelers young and old for more than two decades.

Coryell County artist Jon Brown painted a mural on three inside walls of the restaurant depicting the courthouse square.

Several local residents, including Lella, were featured in the painting.
