It looks unlikely the four homes earmarked for demolition will be taken down before Christmas as originally hoped.

A spokesman for Great Yarmouth Borough Council, which has stepped in to pay for the demolition of four Hemsby chalets after asbestos was found inside one, said: There are four properties at the Marrams which currently require demolition two have fallen down the cliff face and the other two are seriously undermined, as a result of coastal erosion.

The homes are all private properties. However, the borough council will carry out the demolition on behalf of the residents, as asbestos is visible in one of the properties, which could pose a health risk if not removed and disposed of in a controlled and approved fashion.

The other properties are in too dangerous positions, at current, for thorough investigations to be carried out, but may also contain asbestos. The owners of the properties have agreed to the demolition works, which will be undertaken under the supervision of a specialist asbestos removal firm.

Contractor, ID Asbestos, has been appointed and visited the site yesterday (Thursday) to take samples of the materials they have got to handle. They have sent it away for sampling to determine what type of asbestos is present before they proceed. It is unlikely the results will come back before Christmas.

And due to the limited number of working days before December 25, it is also considered uneconomic to hire the plant equipment required before Christmas, as the borough council would have to pay for it to stand redundant and unused over the festive period.

Demolition of Hemsby beach homes will take longer than hoped - but contractors are appointed and carrying out tests

Crews on Monday, Dec. 16, began demolishing the north side of the Manning Avenue bridge, a job that will take at least two weeks, said J. Kerry Theran, the senior engineer on the project.

One excavator with an attached hydraulic sheer its head and jaws resembling something from a Jurassic Park movie started tearing out concrete and steel on the east end of the bridge.

Another excavator with a hydro hammer also broke up concrete on the bridge.

Crews will knock down the roadway on the north side and then begin demolishing the nine concrete piers and two concrete abutments that undergird the roadway.

To prepare for Mondays work, crews used saws last weekend to cut into the deck of the roadway.

The cuts made the length and width of the deck were designed to allow the contractor to take out the bridge in smaller sections, making it an easier and safer job, Theran said.

Safety is a top priority, he said.

Its why a civil engineer certified in California had to develop a demolition plan for the bridge, Theran said.

In addition, two workmen are stationed below the bridge as spotters to keep anyone from walking under it as the excavators tore into the span.

Once the roadway, piers and abutments are gone, crews will move to the next phase of the project: Installing new steel-reinforced, concrete columns and abutments to support the north side of the new bridge.

Demolition of bridge underway

Oak Ridge, Tenn. Today, the Department of Energy announced that it has completed demolition of the K-25 gaseous diffusion building, the largest facility in the DOE complex. The five year demolition project was completed ahead of schedule and all debris shipments are expected to be completed in spring 2014.

The K-25 building, located at the East Tennessee Technology Park formerly known as the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant, was built in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project. At the time of the Manhattan Project, K-25 was the worlds largest building under one roof. Today the Department of Energy has successfully completed its largest-ever demolition project.

Today marks a tremendous accomplishment for the American people advancing our commitment to the safe and complete cleanup of former Manhattan Project sites. said Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman. While there is still important clean-up work to do, completing the demolition of the K-25 gaseous diffusion building and doing so ahead of schedule and under budget is a testament to the outstanding Oak Ridge workforce.

The K-25 building operated until 1964, producing enriched uranium for defense and commercial purposes. During the past decades, as the facility deteriorated, its demolition was considered among the highest priorities for the environmental cleanup program in Oak Ridge. With the demolition of the K-25 building, only two of the five original gaseous diffusion buildings remain. The East Tennessee Technology Park will now be converted into a private sector industrial park.

The K-25 building demolition project began in December 2008, when Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC, completed demolition of the west wing. URS|CH2M Oak Ridge, LLC, or UCOR, took over the project in August 2011 and successfully completed demolition of the buildings east wing and north end.

Im proud to have been part of this historic achievement, said Leo Sain, UCOR President and Project Manager. This project was a massive undertaking involving many people. We are pleased that UCOR, working hand-in-hand with DOE, was able to safely complete the demolition and bring this project full circle.

Although the K-25 building demolition is complete, the historical significance of the facility will live on. In 2012, the DOE, Tennessee State Historic Preservation, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, City of Oak Ridge, East Tennessee Preservation Alliance and other consulting parties finalized a plan that lays out a multi-year plan to commemorate the K-25 complex, which contained more than 500 facilities including the K-25 building.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Energy Department will construct a three-story equipment building that recreates a scale representation of the gaseous diffusion technology and contains authentic equipment used in the original facility. The Departments Office of Environmental Management also agreed to display equipment, artifacts, oral histories, photographs and videos a K-25 History Center on site. Also, the Department provided a $500,000 grant to preserve the Alexander Inn, a historic structure in Oak Ridge where visiting scientists and dignitaries stayed during their visits to the area.

Installed as the HBAs 71st president was Scott Strayer, of Helen Scott Custom Builders, of Clinton.

Strayers grandmother was the associations first female president in 1984 and the evenings installing officer, according to HBA officials.

Strayer also won the Builder of the Year award for an unprecedented back-to-back win. The award has been given annually since 1971 and is voted on twice by all HBA members. First, they vote for the overall best builder. Then the top five vote-getters go on a final ballot, and the membership is asked to vote from one through five, with each vote weighted. The criteria are a high level of customer satisfaction and strong business practices as related to trade and supplier relations.

LAKELAND | Local home builders slowed their pace in November, but 2013 will still go down as a rebound year for the construction industry.

A total 1,776 single-family home permits have been recorded in Polk County through November, the area's highest sum since 2008, when 2,226 permits were counted. Construction activity is already up more than 37 percent from last year, even with one month to go.

"We've had a real surge. We saw a pretty dramatic pickup, probably starting mid-summer," said Mike Hickman, a Lakeland-based custom home builder. "We'll have at least eight homes in the works for the first quarter (next year)."

Polk recorded 111 home permits in November, five fewer than the year before and down from 154 permits in October. November's total does not include permitting figures for Lakeland, which were unavailable Wednesday.

New home construction has been on a strong uptick this year. Unsold existing homes have been in short supply, and many of Polk's distressed properties have been snapped up by investors and other buyers, which has caused median values to rise and helped stabilize the market.

The county's median sale price for existing single- family homes was $123,950 in October (the latest month available), up 14.5 percent on an annual basis, according to the Florida Realtors organization.

With demand returning, construction has resumed at a number of unfinished subdivisions across Polk. Winter Haven had 29 permits last month, versus 16 a year ago and 19 in October.

The increase "came from Lennar picking back up at Traditions," said Alicia Hurley, a permit technician for the city, referring to the neighborhood off Thompson Nursery Road. Builder D.R. Horton also has been working on new homes in Winter Haven.

"Everybody's picked up a little bit," she said.
