Cleaning windows is relatively straight forward once you have all the correct tools and know what you're doing.

In your bucket all you need is cold water and some washing up liquid and that's it. There are people who swear by putting in a bit of vinegar and other rubbish but I wouldn't bother.

I've personally started using Ettore's Squeegee Off because Ive found it actually allows you to clean windows faster than if you just use regular washing up liquid. I dont think Squeegee Off gets the windows looking any cleaner than washing up liquid, but it does let you squeegee windows faster.

Im not sure why, but the Squeegee Off solution lives up to its name by getting more of the water off the window when you squeegee it. This is important because it means you have less detailing to do. (Detailing is the mopping up of trails and water at the edges of the window with a scrim/cloth after youve squeegeed it.) Because you dont have to spend as much time detailing, this makes you ultimately faster and capable of earning more money in a shorter period.

Another good thing I've found about Ettore Squeegee Off is that it allows the rubber blade of your squeegee to slide more easily over the glass. This again makes you faster, and it also prolongs the life of your squeegee rubbers.

The only real disadvantages with Squeegee Off I've found is that it's expensive, and that it also tends to dry out the skin on your hands a lot faster than regular washing up liquid. This can be irritating because your skin will begin to crack, and in winter the skin on your hands will crack anyway. I take moisturising cream out with me to counteract this problem. You could also rub some vaseline into your hands every now and again.

There are alternatives to Ettore Squeegee Off and Washing Up Liquid. GG3 and GG4 are two popular ones, you'll have to try them all to find out which you one prefer.

Like I said, regular washing up liquid works fine as it will get windows looking clean, and when you first start out as a window cleaner you wont have many customers so speed wont be an issue, youll just want to concentrate on doing a good job.

A squeegee, squilgee or sometimes squimjim, is a tool with a flat, smooth rubber blade, used to remove or control the flow of liquid on a flat surface. It is used for cleaning and in printing.

The original squilgee was a long-handled, wooden-bladed tool fishermen used to scrape fish blood and scales from their boat deck, and to push water off the deck after it had been washed[citation needed].

The best-known of these tools is probably the hand-held window squeegee, used to remove the cleaning fluid or water from a glass surface. A soapy solution acts as a lubricant and breaks up the dirt, then the squeegee is used to draw the now water-borne dirt off the glass leaving a perfectly clean surface. Some squeegees are backed with a sponge which can soak up soapy water from a bucket for application to a dirty window.

With the development of the skyscraper in the 20th century, a more efficient tool for the cleaning of window exteriors was needed. Professional window washers began using the Chicago squeegee, a bulky tool with two heavy pink rubber blades. Changing the blades required the loosening of twelve separate screws. The modern single-blade window cleaning squeegee was patented by Ettore Steccone in 1936; it was made of lightweight brass with a very flexible and sharp rubber blade.[1] The Ettore Products Co. is still the leader in the squeegee market today.[2] Squeegee kits can include a telescoping pole to extend the washer's reach.

Simple squeegees are made in various shapes for household use, including the cleaning of shower doors, bathroom tile, and garage floors.

The "swivel method", or "fan method" as it is referred to by professionals, uses a series of strokes combined with turns that hold the water away from the leading edge of the squeegee; when the turn is completed in the opposing direction, there is no water and no dirt left isolated. However straight strokes, either horizontally or vertically are normally much more efficient than fanning. If a few spots are missed, a chamois leather cloth works better for touch up than a towel of cloth or paper.

This is caused by the squeegee being angled incorrectly forcing the water under the rubber blade out into the dry area of the glass or from solution being pushed up into the top edge of the window. The squeegee should instead be tilted in the direction that the blade is moving across the glass to force to water into the wet area of the glass.[3]

Another method used by window cleaners is to tap the blade on an already wet area of the glass to remove any excess water on the rubber blade.[4] Alternatively the rubber blade can be dried with a towel, although this method is slower and not practical when using extension poles.

ACC Minister Judith Collins is encouraging all New Zealanders to take extra care during the holiday season, at home and on the water.

Between December 25 and January 2, ACC received around 36,500 Christmas-related injury claims, costing levy payers around $24 million to date.

"Seemingly harmless activities such as setting up and taking down Christmas trees and lights can prove risky. Small things such as following the three-points-of-contact rule when using a ladder can help reduce the risk," Ms Collins says.

Last year, ACC received 154 Christmas tree related claims, 39 Christmas light related claims and 29 Christmas present related claims.

"We should think about the small things we can do to reduce the risk of injury - such as wiping up spills and cleaning up toys and clutter from walkways. Prevention is better than a cure and it is important we keep that in mind this festive season," Ms Collins says.

Ms Collins is also encouraging Kiwis to be safe in and around the water this summer.

"Kiwis love being around water during summer but its important to know your limits, swim between the flags and look out for one another in the water."

Last year 98 people drowned in New Zealand pools, beaches and waterways.

"This summer we want people to enjoy the water and take simple steps to keep themselves and their families safe."

After a tree has been cut and felled, the stump or tree stump is usually a small remaining portion of the trunk with the roots still in the ground. Stumps may show the age-defining rings of a tree. The study of these rings is known as dendrochronology.

Stumps (both those on the ground and stumps of removed branches) are sometimes able to regenerate into new trees. Often, a deciduous tree that has been cut will re-sprout in multiple places around the edge of the stump or from the roots. Depending on whether the tree is being removed permanently or whether the forest is expected to recover, this can be either desirable or undesirable. Stump sprouts can grow very quickly and sometimes become viable trees themselves either for aesthetics or timber, due to the existing root structure; however, the cut portion of the trunk may weaken the sprouts and introduce disease into the newly forming tree(s).

The process of deliberately cutting a tree to a stump to regrow is known as coppicing.[1]

Tree stumps can be difficult to remove from the ground. They can be dug out, shredded with a stump grinder or burnt.

A common method for stump removal is to use one of the many chemical stump removal products, so long as immediate results are not needed. These stump removers are mostly made of potassium nitrate (KNO3) and act by rapidly increasing the decay of the stump. After an average of 46 weeks, the stump will be rotten through and easily fragmented in manageable pieces. If time is a limiting factor, setting fire to the stump is effective because once the potassium nitrate has been absorbed it acts as an effective oxidizer.

Historically, an explosive called stumping powder was used to blast stumps into bits.

In plantation forests in parts of Europe, stumps are sometimes pulled out of the ground using a specially adapted tracked excavator, to supply wood fuel for biomass power stations. Stump harvesting may provide an increasing component of the woody material required by the biomass power sector.

Danger stands tall in a wooded backyard near 96th and Western in Omaha. An elderly homeowner has been told to cut down dying trees. Its part of a city-wide survey by city arborists.

Since her husband died a few weeks ago Daphne Ulveling stands alone in challenging a city order that she cut down four cottonwoods. Daphne says, " My husband recently died so my income has been greatly reduced."

Daphne says the trees lean more toward her home than north 96th. But the city labels them a menace to public safety and must come down in two months. While those cut it or else words in all caps seem firm like the paper they're written on, city tree experts say they're flexible.

City parks can allow one at a time removal and extend the deadline if the trees aren't an immediate danger. Josh Frey Omaha parks maintenance manager says, " Thats what were here for is to determine how danger it is how long we can let things go for, and work with citizens on extensions."

The city recommends property owners ordered to remove trees get five estimates. Daphne is starting that process but worries she'll end up paying thousands of dollars. One tree removal company tells Fact Finders the trees stand on a slope near a power line so the job will be difficult.

Daphne says, "I can't afford it unless they give me a period of time to pay it off. I'm sure four cottonwoods are going to be expensive."

The widow of a retired military officer Daphne knows about following orders. But the citys demand she cut four backyard cottonwoods is one she plans to challenge.

As last resort homeowners who disagree with a tree removal order can appeal. A board will hear it,and decide if the city order should stand or not.

COLORADO SPRINGS Some issues concerning hazard-tree removal along county property in the Black Forest were ironed out Tuesday at a work session, but questions remain for El Paso County commissioners before a contractor is signed on to do the work.

Outspoken Black Forest residents wondered whether using Federal Emergency Management Administration money would be cost effective. They and the commissioners also questioned whether the work needs to be done now as many of the trees blackened in the June wildfire near county roads and trails could stand for years to come without posing a danger.

"We need to take care of the safety hazards now," said Jim Reid, the county director of public services.

Reid's staff presented a detailed plan at the first of two meetings held to solicit public comment before commissioners gather to make a decision on Dec. 31. The second meeting will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the monthly Black Forest Long-Term Recovery meeting.
