What is a Atlas Chalet Shingle? According to court records, the Atlas Chalet shingle was supposedly created to provide an affordable shingle that has the eye appeal of the more expensive architectural shingle. The Atlas Chalet was a shingle that was manufactured to provide a dimensional appearance in a granule overlay shingle. It is not an architectural shingle but rather achieved this look by utilizing random color palettes in a double thickness and creating a shadow line. The result is a 3 tab shingle that provides the eye-appeal of an architectural shingle. The first type are simple ignition controls which control the gas valve, the ignitor (either a spark generator or hot surface ignitor), and a flame sensing circuit. These controls are more common on older less efficient units.

The other type is usually referred to as an integrated furnace control. These controls perform the same functions as the ignition control but also control the furnace blower in both the air conditioning and heating modes as well as providing onboard diagnostics.

On a call for heat, they first start the induced draft motor (if the furnace has one). Then, the inducer causes a pressure switch to close. The control then either ignites the pilot, starts the direct spark ignitor, or starts the warmup of the hot surface ignitor.

After the pilot is lit and verified or the hot surface ignitor is warmed up (glowing bright yellow), the gas valve is energized. At the same time a timer begins to ensure that the burners were lit. In most cases a separate flame sensor proves that the burners are lit.

After the burners are lit, a timer starts and energizes the furnace blower after the set delay.

Last week, Orange County Supervisors got a glimpse of the $4.3 million in capital improvement plan requests by department heads and constitutional officers for the upcoming fiscal year.

Approximately $700,000 of the requests is funded from federal and state airport aid, while $3.6 million would be funded through transfers from the general fund.

The $3.6 million in requests, which are just that and havent yet been considered for funding by the county administrator much less supervisors, include a new generator and driveway/parking lot improvements at the animal shelter ($82,983); a building inspector vehicle ($19,500); buildings and grounds projects including vehicles ($18,000), HVAC controls for the first floor of the Sedwick building ($40,000) and a government space study ($100,000); funds for the 2016 reassessment ($148,500); E-911 projects including a relocation of the E-911, EOC and Orange County Sheriffs Office Communication Department ($260,000); Rt. 3 initiative consulting ($40,000); fire station generators ($50,000); ambulance replacements ($500,000); county server replacement ($90,000); $360,000 for expanding the landfills second cell and $163,636 in funds towards closing five reserve cells; $417,000 in level funding for the school division (not including any funds for the master plan); and sheriffs office vehicle replacements ($297,000).

These are preliminary requests from department heads, Orange County Finance Director Glenda Bradley said.

Bradley said funding all $3.6 million in general fund requests for the upcoming fiscal year isnt likely.

District 2 Supervisor Jim White asked if the list could be boiled down to a list of items that could be kicked down the road if necessary.

County administrator Julie Summs said the requests represent a needs list. She said the process of narrowing down the list to determine immediate needs has started.

For example, our system wont exist if we dont do some of the information technology things, she said, addressing the need for replacement of the countys server.

She said some items, including the police car and ambulance replacements, fall into the world of hurt list along with setting aside funds for the 2016 reassessment. She said the $3.6 million in requests could be cut in half if the E-911 relocation is placed into a different fiscal year.

At some point we cant push [these things] off, she said. [Well] fall apart if we do.

LAWRENCEVILLE As rain fell outside the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse on Tuesday morning, it gave J. Alvin Wilbanks a fresh example of how recent budget cuts have affected Gwinnett schools.

Weve delayed HVAC improvements, weve delayed carpet upgrades, weve delayed painting, weve delayed roof replacements, said Wilbanks, the CEO/Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools. Were getting reminded of that more frequently as the rain falls.

Wilbanks spoke at an annual gathering of education and county leaders with the Gwinnett legislative delegation ahead of the upcoming General Assembly session. Wilbanks reminded the lawmakers that district officials would strongly recommend any new money available be put in the Quality Basic Education formula.

Gwinnett Technical College President Sharon Bartels also outlined more details about the new $24 million campus on Old Milton Parkway in North Fulton County scheduled to open in January, 2016. Construction is scheduled to begin in April on the 100,000 square foot building that will cost $6 million annually to operate, Bartels said.

The technical college system never gets special allocation when we open new buildings, much less new campuses, Bartels told the lawmakers.

While the money to build the new campus building is already allocated, money for operating it isnt, Bartels said, and she would prefer to not divert resources away from Gwinnett Tech. Bartels said the North Fulton market was desperately underserved, and Technical College System officials said they wouldnt be serving the community if there wasnt an opportunity for students in that area.

Bartels also showed a pie chart that said 77 percent of state education funding goes to K-12, 19 percent goes to the Board of Regents and 3.3 percent goes to technical colleges.

Georgia Gwinnett College Acting Provost Lois Richardson told lawmakers that her school is $40 per credit hour cheaper than the next closest baccalaureate institution, and $7 cheaper per credit than when the college opened in 2006.

WOODSTOCK Streamlining of cables and the installation of new LED fixtures and dimmers are brightening the outlook of the lighting setup at the Woodstock Opera House.

The second of a two-phase project to update old equipment will get going in January when contractors install 96 new dimmers to replace 36 old ones. Theyll also rearrange and add circuits.

During the first phase, completed earlier this year, the Opera House got a new digital lighting control console, LED stage lighting fixtures and low-voltage wiring. Phase one of the project cost the city about $86,000.

Contracts for the second phase were approved by the City Council last week at a cost of about $65,000.

The improvements up efficiency while pulling lighting components into a more organized state, Opera House Director John Scharres said.

Because theyve been added over periods of time, theyre in different housing, have different configurations, he said. Were taking the opportunity to straighten all of this out and make it essentially state of the art.

The LED lighting fixtures installed earlier this year open up color options for the theater. Previous fixtures were white lamp stage lights, colored by shaded gels. The new LED lights have the ability to, through digital controls, come up with just about any color instantaneously.

Its a fraction of the size of whats currently doing the work and expands our capability by a significant margin, Scharres said.
