In an email seen by The Telegraph, Maintenance Management Ltd (MML), which handles Morrisons facilities, told contractors that the retailer is facing a tough end of year in respect of their budgetary position.

The window-cleaning ban, which was launched at the start of December, will run until February 2, which marks the end of Morrisons financial year.

Last month, Morrisons reported a disappointing 2.4pc drop in like-for-like sales for its third quarter, but pledged that full-year profits were still in line with expectations.

A spokesman for Morrisons said the budgetary position referred to in the email was the store maintenance budget, not the companys wider financial position.

Morrisons said: Morrisons has decided to reduce window cleaning at stores because it is less important to customers at the darkest time of the year, because the water that runs off windows can be a slippage hazard in the winter, and so we can spend money on maintenance activity that our customers do care about at this time of year.

We will be restoring the normal service in the spring and the reduction does not affect windows easily seen by customers."

Window cleaning at Morrisons stores has been suspended for two months due to financial constraints as tough trading conditions prevail and budget challengers grab an ever-bigger share of the grocery market.

The Bradford retailer, which reported a 2.4 per cent fall in like-for-like sales for its third quarter, said it had decided to reduce window cleaning because it was less important during the dark winter months.

Morrisons brake on spending with contractor Maintenance Manage-ment Ltd comes as its market share is growing by less than the three per cent market average, along with Asda and Tesco, according to recent figures from retail analysts Kantar Worldpanel. In contrast budget supermarket Aldis year-on-year growth rate was 31.7 per cent in the three months to the end of October and the latest in an unbroken series of double-digit growth figures dating back to early 2011.

The cleaning ban will run until February 2, the end of Morrisons financial year.

A Morrisons spokesman said: Morrisons has decided to reduce window cleaning at stores because it is less important to customers at the darkest time of the year; because the water that runs off windows can be a slippage hazard in the winter; and so we can spend money on maintenance activity that our customers do care about at this time of year.

Meanwhile, Morrisons, along with other major supermarkets, have warned that a vote for Scottish independence in next years referendum could force up food prices there. Chief executive Dalton Philips said prices could be raised if new regulations by the Scottish Government pushed up business costs.

He said: If the regulatory environment was to increase the burden of the cost structure on business, that would potentially have to be passed through to consumer pricing, because why should the English and Welsh consumer subsidise this increased cost of doing business in Scotland?

A man has died after falling from the sixth floor of a harbourside apartment at Kirribilli in what police are calling an awful incident

Neighbours heard a woman's screams seconds after her husband fell to his death from the sixth-floor window of a harbourside unit at Kirribilli on Monday.

The woman ran to a lodge across the road, crying as she begged someone to help revive her husband.

She just said he fell off the window. She just like shock, really scary, like shaking

She told staff at Glenferrie Lodge that her husband was cleaning a window in their Carrabella Street unit when he fell and landed in the car park below about 8am.

Onlookers tried desperately to revive the 47-year-old man but he went into cardiac arrest at the scene and died.

Police said they believed the man had fallen in what was described as an awful incident and, at this stage, did not believe self harm was involved.

Horror plunge from window

Feeling the cold this winter? So is your plumbing, and it, along with your water heater, has to work harder to compensate. But it doesn't have to be that way if you give it a helping hand with some insulation, so if you haven't insulated your plumbing yet, get to it: wrapping your plumbing and hot water heater isn't expensive, doesn't take long, and will save you big money on energy costs this winter.

Here's what you need to know.

For hot water pipes, if warm water flows through an uninsulated pipe, it loses heat rapidly to the surrounding environment, thanks to the large surface area of the pipe. That results in higher energy costs for you, as well as ambient heat loss. By insulating those pipes, you can help direct the heat where it needs to go, ensuring that warm water stays warm on its way to the sink, shower or washing machine.

Insulation products specifically designed for pipes are available, and they easily snap on or wrap around. You can also buy loose sheet insulation, wrap it and tape it on your own. Make sure it's rated for plumbing use, and as you install, take the time to check your plumbing for signs of corrosion and leaks. The folks at Treehugger did the math and they note that doing this project yourself can result in a return on investment within one year, as the cost of materials is roughly equal to what you will save annually.

Conventional tank water heaters also benefit from being wrapped. Water heater blankets and other insulation products are available at home supply and hardware stores, and they're very easy to install. After putting them in place, you should notice an immediate energy savings, because the water heater won't need to work as hard to heat water and maintain a good temperature. In addition, if the power goes out, the blanket will help the water stay warmer longer, an important consideration if your area is prone to power outages.

If you want to level up, talk to your electrician, plumber, or gas professional about installing a tankless water heater or flash heater. These technologies heat water on demand when you need it, resulting in a significant energy savings.

The EPA estimates you can save almost $50 a year by wrapping your water heater, and in some regions, utilities hand out water heater blankets for free or at low cost. Sometimes energy-savers like water heater blankets are also available for free to low-income people, and you can recommend installing one to your landlord if you're a renter; while saving money on your utilities might not be a major concern for the property owner, running the home in a more energy efficient way could be a bonus.

Please note that when your pipes are insulated, you can often turn the water heater down by a few degrees, because the water doesn't lose as much heat in transit. And if your water heater is insulated, the EPA recommends keeping the set temperature at or below 130 degrees, because higher temperatures could damage wiring with the blanket in place. As always, periodically inspect your plumbing for leaks, and make sure you know how to operate the relief valve, emergency stops, and other safety systems in your household plumbing.

Snow and Ice on Porches and Steps Can be Hazardous for Letter Carriers

KANSAS CITY, MO "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" is an inscription on the James Farley Post Office in New York City, which is a quote derived from 5th Century BC Greek Historian Herodotus.

And while city and rural letter carriers in southern Missouri and eastern Kansas are proud of the Postal Services unofficial motto, a bit of help from their customers is always welcomed especially with this week's snow and ice across the region.

"Snow and ice on sidewalks, front porches and around rural mailboxes present a serious safety challenge for our letter carriers across the Midwest," said Gail Hendrix, manager of the agencys Kansas City-based Mid-America District. The district covers most of western, central and southern Missouri and eastern Kansas.

"Our employees take their jobs seriously and take pride in reporting to work -- regardless of the conditions," Hendrix said, "but if access to the mailbox is blocked by snow or ice, we remind them that safety is paramount to delivering the mail."

The Postal Service also is reminding customers to keep access to their rural mailboxes clear should snow and ice become a hazard. "Our rural and city carriers will battle freezing temperatures, ice and snow in many parts of the Midwest," Hendrix explained. "We urge customers to do the right thing, not just for our letter carriers, but for everyone."

By taking these safety measures, postal customers might be able to make a bit of history themselves this year: an accident-free winter for everyone.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
