The police were called to intervene on Saturday when animal protectionists at Flatey Mrum and Heinabergsaurar near Hfn in Hornafjrur in Southeast Iceland tore down approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet) of fences to prevent reindeer from getting caught in them.

rni Stefn rnason, one of the activists, told ruv.is that wild reindeer which get entangled in the wires sometimes suffer a slow and painful death. This has proven a problem for more than a decade, he stated.

rni added that he had been contacted by a reindeer supervisor ten days ago, who had expressed concern over the situation because once again, reindeer have been found, stuck together by wires or even dead.

Because of a lack of action, people had gathered together to take matters into their own hands and remove the fences which are illegal, rni maintained. He claimed that the local authorities in Hfn should have removed them a long time ago but not done their duty.

According to RV, measures had been taken to make the fences safer by stringing them up after many reindeer got caught in them two years ago but now they have loosened again, proving dangerous for the wild animals.

Demolition of the old Lichtenstein building in downtown Corpus Christi continued at full steam Tuesday, clearing the way for a new retail and apartment complex.

Crews began tearing down the former department store on Monday. It will be replaced by a state of the art retail and apartment complex to be built by Realtex Construction.

Camacho Demolition Project Manager Vernon Carr said that implosion was considered, but ultimately, that option proved to be too expensive.

"We had the idea to implode, and I presented it to the general contractor. Just financially, it was out of our budget a little bit," Carr said. "There's a lot of prep work that goes involved with that. There's a lot of permits. There's a lot of street closures. There's implosion experts we'd have to hire as well."

Demolition is expected to take 60-75 days. The entire project from start to finish is expected to take 16 months before the Cosmopolitan at Corpus Christi, as the new complex will be named, is complete.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders staged a Jala Deeksha demanding that the State government construct a retaining wall to protect people from the floods in river Krishna.

The TDP leaders stood in waist deep water in the river at Pushkarghat here on Monday to register their protest against inordinate delay in construction of the retaining wall. TDP Vijayawada (East) in-charge Gadde Rammohan Rao said that the TDP government had commenced construction of embankment for river Krishna from Vijayawada to Avanigadda to protect the people living in the vicinity of river. The objective was to protect the people from flash floods and also provide road facility to remotest village. The TDP could construct a bridge near Avanigadda. But, the project was shelved as soon as the Congress came to power. The people were forced to fend for themselves, he alleged.

The ruling Congress had been making false promises about the construction of a retaining wall on the river bank. There was no progress during the last nine years. The TDP would continue the agitation for the retaining wall, he added.

Medical camps

TDP Urban Mahila president Chennupati Usha Rani and others were present.

Meanwhile, TDP organised medical camps at 57 and 58 divisions to cater to the needs of residents of Rajiv Nagar, LBS Nagar and other surrounding localities. The camps were organised under the aegis of NTR Trust Bhavan. The people were screened for viral fevers and medicines were distributed to the needy.
