The East Williston Village Board of Trustees approved the demolition of the controversial 8 Sumter Avenue property on Wednesday Oct. 16, awarding the contract to J. Galvin Construction Incorporated for $28,500.

Should the board not receive a confirmation in writing that certain miscellaneous items, which a list has been devised, will be included in the demolition, a contract will be awarded to Amport Design and Construction for $61,653. Both companies submitted bids for the job last month.

Referring to the $33,153 difference in the two bids, Mayor David Tanner said that subsequent to conversations and clarifications, they seem to be comparable in terms of the scope of work provided. A provision on part of the bid by J

Village Attorney Jeffrey Blinkoff also to the approved resolution that any money that is currently owed on the property that has not been recouped be transferred to the tax rolls, any further costs related to demolition be sent to the property owner, John Muzio, and upon their failure to pay, that money will be transferred to the tax rolls.

Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra said small-scale demolition is underway at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the project will take several weeks.

"The process of demolition is incremental, staged precisely and executed carefully," she said. "There is no wrecking ball action; it is rather a piece-by-piece, section-by-section removal."

The gunman killed his mother at their home before going to the school on Dec. 14. He committed suicide as police arrived.

A task force of 28 Newtown elected officials voted unanimously in May to raze the Sandy Hook Elementary School and build a new one on the property where the existing school is located.

Newtown has accepted a $50 million state grant for the project, and a new school is expected to open by December 2016. Students have been attending classes in a neighboring town.

Contractors are being asked to destroy materials to eliminate nearly every trace of the building, an effort Llodra has said is intended to protect the victims' privacy and keep people from taking parts of the building as souvenirs. Contractors also are required to sign confidentiality agreements to forbid public discussion of the site and the building.

With hopes of reviving downtown Gettysburg, plans for redevelopment on North Stratton Street are back in motion a decade after they started.

Almost.

Adams County Industrial Development Authority officials were hoping to demolish the 108 N. Stratton St. buildings next week, but they need to wait for hazardous materials to be cleaned out of the three buildings first, said Robin Fitzpatrick, president of Adams County Industrial Development Authority.

But that didn't stop Adams County Industrial Development Authority officials clutching their shovels and sledgehammers to pose in front of the buildings at a ground-breaking event Thursday morning.

"We knew something needed to be done with it," said Kaycee Kemper of Adams County Economic Development Corp. "The buildings became an eyesore."

Demolition is slated to begin soon on Berkleys condemned Town Hall building.

A large portion of the building, which was constructed in 1926 as an elementary school, was condemned in late 2010 over concerns related to its structural integrity.

Workers will begin to completely fence off the site on Saturday in preparation to take down the building. Removal of hazardous materials, such as asbestos, is expected to begin Nov. 4 with full demolition to follow, town Executive Secretary Paul Modlowski said.

Earlier this month, selectmen finalized a $151,000 contract with J.R. Vinagro Corp. for demolition of the former town office building.

Town officials, Modlowski said, expect to meet Monday with the contractor and project manager to discuss the upcoming demolition.

After the demolition is complete, plans call for a new 9,800-square-foot Town Hall to be built on the site. The new building would be a single-story structure that would host the Council on Aging as well as town offices.

We will advertise for a general contractor for the entire new building, Modlowski said. Were trying to get that done, hopefully, by the end of December.

Architectural plans, he said, are nearing 90 percent completion. Chicago-based Johnson Roberts Associates is creating the designs.

Voters last November authorized the town to issue up to $3.5 million in municipal bonds to fund the Town Hall project. The budget for the new construction alone is $2.6 million.

Town officials have said they hope to open the new Town Hall in 2015.

NEWTOWN, Conn., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- The demolition of Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School has quietly begun, Newtown's highest elected official said 10 months after the mass murder.

"Small scale demo activity has begun and will accelerate over the next days," First Selectwoman Patricia Llodra told television station WVIT, West Hartford, Conn.

"The process of demolition is incremental, staged precisely and executed carefully," she said. "There is no wrecking-ball action. It is rather a piece-by-piece, section-by-section removal."

The work site is shielded from public view to prevent anyone from taking photos or videos. Contractors taking down the school where 20 schoolchildren and six adult staff members were killed Dec. 14 have signed confidentiality agreements, WVIT said.

The massacre was the second deadliest mass shooting by a single person in U.S. history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, which left 32 people dead.

The Sandy Hook shooting prompted renewed debate about gun control in the United States and led to stricter gun laws in Connecticut, New York and other nearby states.

All parts of the elementary school, as well as the playground, driveway and sidewalks, will be pulverized or melted down so pieces of the tragedy can't be taken as souvenirs or sold to bidders on eBay, Llodra said last week.

The 28-member Sandy Hook School Task Force voted unanimously May 15 to demolish the school and build a new one on the same spot.

Town voters voted overwhelmingly Oct. 5 to fund the project with a $49 million state grant.

The entrance to the new school, scheduled to open by December 2016, will be relocated so people won't have to walk in front of a firehouse where anguished parents waited hours before learning their children were dead, the Los Angeles Times said.

CAMERON HIGHLANDS, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- The residents of Kampung Lembah Bertam are urging the authorities to build a retaining wall and a wider irrigation canal to prevent possible recurrences of mudslides.

Village head Wong Fook Shai, 56, said such a move was necessary as heavy rains frequently caused mudslides at the river banks.

"The authorities should build a retaining wall first and then widen the river. If not the situation will get worse as the floods will cause mudslides which will destroy our farms," he told Bernama here today.

Wong, who has been the village head since 2009, said the tragedy which occurred on Wednesday was the worst ever experienced by the villagers.

The Bertam valley, Ringlet mudslide occurred about 1 am yesterday morning. The released water from the Sultan Abu Bakar caused the Bertam River to burst its banks. Three people died, one was injured, one is still missing and 80 houses and about 100 vehicles were damaged.

Wong, who has lived in the valley for more than 50 years, said the residents were trying to estimate their losses in order to apply for some assistance.

Meanwhile, a Bernama survey at the Ringlet community hall found that all the victims were left with only the clothes on their backs.

According to Margaret Roslin, 48, she heard the warning siren about midnight signaling the release of water from the dam.

"When I heard the second siren I grabbed my kids and ran. My house was right in front, so I saw it being washed away," she said.

A Pahang Social Welfare Department spokesman said as of 3 pm today 87 victims from 21 families have been housed at the relief centre.
