The commercial architects and workplace design specialists at OTJ Architects are helping businesses prepare for the biggest shift corporate America has seen in the last two decades. It is estimated that 46 percent of U.S. workers will be made up of millennials by 2020, and that is projected to grow to 75 percent by 2025, according to a recent finding by Impact lab. While many companies begin to prepare their business plan for the upcoming year, smart businesses are preparing for long-term success by investing in cool, relaxing and social office environments to meet the needs of this upcoming generation of workers.
Generation Y, often known as millennials, consist of those who were born between 1979 and 1997. And pretty soon, companies of all sizes will be vying for this group of professionals who have very different mentalities and needs. In order for small businesses to get ahead of their competition, they need an office environment that accommodates this generations dynamic.
In less than 10 years well see those businesses who adapted succeed wonderfully in terms of recruitment and retention, and those businesses who didnt realize the importance will likely struggle, says Lance Jaccard, partner at OTJ Architects.
According to CNN, this generation is set to transform office life. To understand what this change means to employers, experts have been looking into the work patterns and preferences of more than 15,000 employees in 40 countries and across four generations.
The differences found between millennials and baby boomers are that of night and day. Unlike the older generations before them, millennials are used to collaborating and easily communicating with their team members. They work best through open and frequent collaboration, they want constant feedback on their performance and their preferred ways to communicate almost never involve a simple phone call, according to The New Work Style of Generation Y by the Society for Human Resource Management.
For small businesses, that means creating a workspace that fosters open communication by getting rid of high-walled cubicles and offices for executives and creating an open environment where people sit beside each other instead of being blocked off. Prioritizing an engaging workspace, Generation Y employees blend their personal and private lives, and they like a workplace to feel residential and like home.

Message of His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III President of the Philippines To the United Architects of the Philippines On the occasion of their Architects Summit and Sustainable Environment Tourism
[October 25, 2013]
My warmest greetings to the United Architects of the Philippines as you hold your Architects Summit and Sustainable Environment Tourism.
Todays increasingly rapidly changing milieu has brought in a wide array of complexities: Shifting climate patterns, dwindling resources, and overpopulation challenge contemporary societies to strike a balance between pursuing economic development and harnessing our natural assets. Let this event serve as a platform to launch initiatives geared towards the improvement of both business and ecological landscapes. We in government look forward to more innovations in your craft, as we sustain our distinction in the global competition and fulfill our nations great potential.
Your profession allows you to further shape the skyline of the country; take this opportunity to contribute to building a just, equitably progressive society. Rick Flynn, general manager of BDW Roofing Inc. in Stephenville, accepted the CBDC Long Range 2013 Business Award of Distinction on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013.
STEPHENVILLE Rick Flynn, the new general manager of BDW Roofing Inc., is thrilled with the growth of the company since its inception in June of 2007.
During that time, the company has grown from five to 18 employees and has a direct impact on the community, Flynn told people in attendance Wednesday night at the annual meeting of the Community Business Development Corporation (CBDC) Long Range.
Flynn accepted the CBDCs 2013 Business Award of Distinction at the Dhoon Lodge in Black Duck Siding. This year there were three nominations and BDW Roofing was chosen for the award.
When it comes down to it, CBDC really got this company going, said Flynn. When Robert (White), the owner-operator, wanted to branch out on his own, he went to CBDC for guidance and support.
He said the roofing company is very safety conscious, with roofers who take great pride in their quality of workmanship.
Flynn said since BDW got its bonding status last year, those roofers have been flat out doing large jobs and public tender work for everything from schools to municipal and government facilities. In addition to roofing, the company is also into asbestos abatement, mould detection and removal and infection control and do work all around the province.
The companys work in Stephenville includes such large jobs locally as the Stephenville Manor, Stephenville Primary School, the Zion Pentecostal Church and St. Stephens Catholic Church. Other jobs included portions of the West Coast Training Centre and the replacement of the roof on the Regional Aquatic Centre, which is nearing completion.
White told the corporation his company does not experience staff turnovers and that his employees are one big happy family. Unfortunately he could not be on hand to accept the award as he was out of the area working.
