ROCKAWAY, NJ--(Marketwired - Oct 17, 2013) - Parette Somjen Architects (PSA) (www.planetpsa.com), a 25-year-old architecture firm that's recognized as one of New Jersey's best places to work, today announced the appointment of Jason Kliwinski, AIA, LEED Fellow, BD&C/OM, as its director of sustainable design. Kliwinski will work from PSA's Rockaway, New Jersey headquarters to integrate a culture of sustainability within the firm and across its wide array of clients and projects.
Kliwinski is a founding partner of the Green Building Center (GBC), an integrated collaboration of veteran partners that provide complete green consulting, design, construction, education and building products in a single location. In concert with Kliwinski's appointment, PSA became a member of the GBC, where it will collaborate with other members to provide sustainable design services.
"Architects with the level of highly specialized experience Jason brings are a rare find. Throughout his nearly two-decade career, he has become a recognized pioneer in the field of cost-effective sustainable design," said Marc Parette, president, Parette Somjen Architects. "His forward-thinking approach and his proven experience in leading a full-fledged industry revolution will go a long way in building a culture of sustainability for the team at PSA, our clients and their projects."
Prior to joining PSA, Kliwinski served as director of sustainable design for Spiezle Architectural Group where he was responsible for integrating sustainable design throughout the company's culture and projects. This was achieved through developing significant internal and external green education programs, initiating sustainable energy and carbon neutrality plans and integrating LEED principles into design and consulting. Previous to that, Kliwinski held project management positions at The Prisco Group and DF Gibson Architects.
Concurrently, Kliwinski spent five years as USGBC LEED Faculty and as an adjunct Professor of Sustainability at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) School of Architecture. In 2010, he served as the American Institute of Architects New Jersey chapter president and is the current Northeast Regional Chair of the Committee on the Environment (COTE) for AIA Nationally as well as Chair of the Resiliency Committee for USGBC-NJ.
Kliwinski earned his Bachelor's degree in architecture from NJIT in 1994. In 2001 Jason obtained his architectural license in New Jersey and became one of the first LEED accredited professionals in the country. Among the highlights of his career following LEED guidelines, Kliwinski participated in the gold certified Microsoft School of the Future project in Philadelphia.
"Building a culture of sustainability transcends the practice of architecture. My role at PSA affords me the opportunity to use architecture as a conduit to establish a strong foundation of sustainable design for the company, its clients and the projects we manage," noted Kliwinski. "I'm eager to help the team adopt a collaborative approach that ensures maximum sustainability with our projects across the board."
Kliwinski has built a reputation as a thought provoking speaker at industry events, including Sustainable Construction Materials and Practices Conference, GovEnergy, WEEC, SCUP, Greenbuild and AIA. In 2012 Jason was named a LEED Fellow at Greenbuild in San Francisco. He is the current Northeast Regional Chair of the Committee on the Environment (COTE) for AIA Nationally as well as Chair of the Resiliency Committee for USGBC-NJ.

RIDGEWOOD, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Mediacom Communications Corporations new corporate headquarters reflects the high-tech nature of its business. As architect and master planner for the project, Barry Poskanzer of Ridgewood, N.J.-based Poskanzer Skott Architects (PSA), worked closely with the nations 8th largest cable television company to design a forward-thinking office building with sophisticated amenitiesall set on 200 acres of farmland in Blooming Grove, N.Y.
Poskanzer describes the 110,000-square-foot building design as paying dual homage to its agri-cultural context as well as the architecture of classic modernism. PSA spearheaded every design and development detail, fast-tracking the project through programming, site plan approvals and construction and completing it in 26 months.
Mediacom sought an efficient and organized space that would foster a unique work environment while allowing room for future growth, Poskanzer said. We pride ourselves on being able to translate clients' wishes into well-designed and highly functional buildings.
The headquarters is set high on a hill surrounded by stone walls and wild meadows. Echoing its rustic setting, PSA incorporated a dramatic, three-story silo that houses conference spaces. Inside, the emphasis is on maximizing natural light and hilltop views for every employee. A serpentine glass wall and sweeping steel and glass staircase highlight a striking three-story lobby. The ground floor features lifestyle amenities including a full-service cafeteria and fitness center. The second and third stories include conference and training spaces, private offices, workstations and a skylight roof garden. Loft ceilings and dramatic lighting project a spacious feel throughout.
The building already has garnered several industry awards, including the Society of American Registered Architects 2013 Celebration of Architecture and Design; the Architects League of Northern New Jersey 2013 Peer Design Gold Award; and the Newark & Suburban Architects League 2012 Peer Design Bronze Award (un-built project).

LEXINGTON, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
The Kentucky Board of Architects (KYBOA) reported that 97 percent of architects used the online renewal system, http://boa.ky.gov, to renew their licenses this year, forgoing the traditional paper renewal forms.
KYBOA began offering online renewals in 2009 using Kentucky.govs secure, online eGovernment platform. Architects quickly gravitated toward the new process, but this years adoption rate marks a new high. Between June and August, more than 2,300 licensees went online to update their information and renew their license. To date, this is the largest number of licensees to take advantage of the online system.
Even in our first year we had a great response to moving the license renewal process online, said KYBOA Executive Director T. Rexford Cecil. The system was so successful that we immediately started working to move our Certified Interior Designers annual renewal online.
The Board reports that Kentucky interior designers also favor the convenience of the online service with an impressive 76 percent of designers using the online system this year.
The online renewal process is convenient for licensees, but it also helps streamline KYBOAs operations significantly. Renewals that are processed online allow KYBOA staff to focus more time on their mission of protecting the publics health, safety and welfare, rather than processing thousands of paper renewal forms sent through the mail.
The amount of time the online process saves our licensees and staff is astronomical, said Mr. Cecil. But its not just time savings. With budget restrictions, Boards have to try and save money anywhere they can. Not having to mail out over 2,000 wallet cards and receipts each year is a huge benefit.
Prior to offering renewals through their website, KYBOA staff manually processed each renewal - between 2,200 and 2,450 a year - then updated the KYBOA master database of licensees. Staff also used to print and mail wallet cards and payment receipts for each renewal. Now, the online applications automatically update the Boards database and, after a successful payment, users can save and print wallet cards and receipts immediately.
The online platform used by KYBOA is self-funded, meaning that tax dollars are not appropriated to build or maintain the services. Instead, the services are funded by small fees added to each online renewal. These convenience fees fund the development and ongoing support of the platform and ensure that the solutions provided through Kentucky.gov are easy to use and adopt. Over the next year, the Board plans to upgrade their online services to the latest Kentucky.gov technology, which will make their website and online applications more mobile-friendly and provide the KYBOA staff with more tools to manage their day-to-day operations efficiently.

Sergey Kolesnikov and Igor Rybakov spent their summers in the early 1990s fixing rooftops around Moscow, a job that paid them about $500 a month.
The work gave the aspiring scientists, who were roommates at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Russias top research university, a chance to become entrepreneurs after the fall of the Soviet Union.
We earned two degrees, one in physics and one in roofing, Kolesnikov said in an interview at his central Moscow office.
The roofing degree paid off. Closely held Technonicol, the company they founded while in college, is now the countrys largest roofing-supply company, with a network of 700 distribution outlets across the country, 180 of them wholly-owned. The business had revenue of 59.4 billion rubles ($1.9 billion) in 2012, up 25 percent from the prior year, according to financial statements provided by Kolesnikov.
The company is valued at $2.8 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg, making the equal partners two of the youngest billionaires in Russia. Neither has appeared on an international wealth ranking.
I always liked to solve puzzles, and to me business is a kind of puzzle, Kolesnikov said. Neither of us ever thought about earning money of such scale.
The billionaires, both 41, had a well-timed entry into the market, catching the start of a wave of private homeownership and government upgrades to Soviet-era housing. The number of newly built private homes in Russia almost doubled to 205,000 from 2002 to 2012, according to data from the Federal State Statistics Service, and new apartment units increased more than two times during the past decade to 838,000.
In the past five years, the government has spent more than $7 billion improving the countrys housing, according to the State Fund for Assistance to Housing and Communal Services, and plans to spend an additional $3.3 billion on materials to upgrade 1.6 million apartment blocks that are still in need of repair.
Technonicol has a 30 percent share of Russias insulation market, according to Moscow-based Abarus Market Research. It derives 70 percent of its sales supplying repair work and the balance from new construction sales.
The companys operating income rose 44 percent to 10.5 billion rubles, according to the financial statements. Kolesnikov said earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization was 12 billion rubles in 2012, and that Technonicol has doubled its output per worker since 2008.
