Plumber: Wall-mounted faucets can top standard faucet choices

    - October 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dear Ed: We're saving up for a nice little bathroom remodeling job and will be on a strict budget. The job will include replacing our old bathroom sink and faucet. We have a standard faucet, but because we're installing a completely new sink and vanity we would like to put in a wall-mounted faucet. Will that be more expensive than putting in a regular faucet that just mounts on the sink? Joe, Ohio

Dear Joe: Wall-mounted faucets can be a good choice for new construction. Like the name says, wall-mounted bathroom faucets mount on the wall behind the sink and typically are installed on raised "vessel" sinks, or under-counter mounted bathroom sinks.

They provide a trendy look and can make it easier to clean the sink or counter because the entire faucet is raised off the deck. However, you may have noticed that I used the phrase "new construction." That can be the key for choosing a wall-mounted faucet.

With new construction or a complete bathroom demo job, the walls are opened up and the extra work needed to pipe in a wall-hung faucet usually can be kept under control. If you did not plan on opening up the wall behind the sink, this type of faucet could add significant costs to your job. Bottom line: If you really want a sleek, wall-mounted faucet, you may need to raise the ceiling on your bathroom remodeling budget.

Plumber for trial over gas deaths

A 52-year-old Londonderry plumber has been committed for trial in the Crown Court accused of causing the death of two teenagers three years ago.

The judge, sitting in Coleraine, said he was satisfied there was a prima facie case against George Brown.

Aaron Davidson and Neil McFerran, both 18, died in August 2010 when there was a gas leak in their holiday apartment in Castlerock, County Londonderry.

Mr Brown, of Ballygawley Road, Aghadowey, was granted continuing bail.

Mr Brown, is accused of the manslaughter of the two friends.

The judge said he was "well aware of the nature of the tragedy" that had befallen the teenagers' families but that his duty was not to perform a "dry run" of a trial but to decide if Mr Brown had a case to answer.

"Two young men died from carbon monoxide poisoning," the judge said.

"The source of that carbon monoxide was from an incorrectly-fitted flue which had dislocated at the elbow joint.

"That flue was part and parcel of the boiler installation which the apartment owner had arranged with the defendant whose fingerprints were found on one section of it."

Feds stop paying pest control bills

    - October 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Due to the federal shutdown, the federal government is no longer paying for monitoring for the Asian citrus psyllid, an invasive pest that carries a devastating disease. U-T San Diego file photo.

A California citrus association expects to pay $100,000 this month to cover pest control bills the federal government is no longer paying due to the federal shutdown, the groups president said on Tuesday.

California Citrus Mutual agreed to cover the costs to ensure workers continue to monitor traps for the Asian citrus psyllid, an invasive insect that carries the deadly and incurable plant disease called Huanglongbing or HLB, said Joel Nelsen, the citrus groups president.

Nelsen said the federal government has stopped paying the state government to perform the work.

Over the past decade, HLB has caused huge financial losses for citrus growers in Florida. Strong efforts funded by the federal government and the states citrus industry are underway to eradicate the citrus pysllid in Southern California, where it turned up in 2008.

The states first confirmed detection of the HLB disease was made in March 2012 in Hacienda Heights in Los Angeles County.

Nelson said a lapse in trap monitoring could have complicated efforts to combat the pest across the state, including in San Diego County, which has a $70-million a year lemon industry.

If you leave your (pest eradication) program less than whole, you leave your industry vulnerable, he added.

Nelsen said the federal government has agreed to pay back the association once the shutdown ends. He added that the state receives about $10 million annually from the federal government for operations to combat the bug, while the citrus industry contributes about $15 million annually toward the fight.

The Asian citrus psyllid is a brown insect about the size of an aphid. It attacks new citrus leaf growth and causes the new leaf tips to twist or burn back, according to the University of Californias Agriculture and Natural Resources website.

Mike Bristow, senior editor at BestHomeAlarmSystemsReviews.com, stated, People on a fixed income who are looking for a home security system want to ensure that the price falls within their budget. They dont want surprises so home security companies that tend to increase their monthly monitoring rates are not going to be a good fit. BestHomeAlarmSystemsReviews.com recommends that consumers ask if the monthly fees will ever go up or will they remain the same during the life of the contract.

The team at BestHomeAlarmSystemsReviews.com noted that some of the most important questions that consumers should ask include:

    1. Ask to lock in the monthly monitoring rate: Tell the home security company to lock in the monthly monitoring rate.

    2. Ask for a discount: Many home security companies run specials or will match a competitor special. Ask if there are any discounts available.
