ST. PAUL, Minn. - Work will resume Wednesday on the St. Paul demolition site where a heavy equipment operator wascrushed by a cement slab.

Ryan companies, the lead contractor onSt. Paul's new Lowertown Ballpark Project,made the announcement one week after the death of Johnny Vanek. The61-year-old Plymouth resident was killed when a large chunk of cement he was pulling off the old Gillette Building fell on his excavator.

Ryan Companies spokesman Collin Barr says over the next several days activity on the sitewill involve removal of debris and salvaged materials from the site. Rachel Contracting is reviewing the demolition plan to determine if any modifications should be made to ensure worker safety.

Barr says demolition delays at this stage will not impact the on-time delivery of the ballpark.

Earlier Tuesday family members, friends and co-workers gathered at the Lowertown site for a brief and private memorial service for Johnny Valek.

Metal fences now surround Eastland Mall and piles of debris have been stacked up in the parking lot. The beginning of a seven- to eight-month demolition process is underway.

Not every piece of the mall is being destroyed. Demolition crews carefully worked to save four of these original signs.

"I think it's really important to the east side to have these signs located on the east side just as a reminder," said Charlotte Mayor Patsy Kinsey.

Where these signs will go in the community is still being worked out, as are plans with what to do with the 80-acre property once the mall is gone.

"We've got retail that has been in decline we have housing values that need to be stabilized. What happens at Eastland Mall is important," said Brad Richardson, Charlotte economic development manager.

Richardson said right now the city has six months to work with a developer on what to do with the property.

He says the current vision includes retail and office space -- along with housing -- all anchored by a movie studio complex.

"It's an exciting vision. What our job is as a staff is to give good information to the council so they can make an informed decision about the project of whether this is the right development deal and weather this is the right time to do that," Richardson said.

But he says even if the project gets the go ahead -- there is no definitive timetable for when new construction on this site will begin.

Demolition underway for Eastland Mall

Although final instructions have been issued to demolish parts of SJK (C) Chin Woo on Sept 24 as part of a land acquisition exercise, these will not be carried out as scheduled at the 84-year-old school in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur.

MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai (left) said Culture and Tourism Minister Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz has promised him that the demolition has been suspended until a meeting is held between the ministry and the school.

"I have an assurance from Nazri and the school has been assured that no demolition will be done pending negotiations," Liow said when contacted today.

He was responding to comments by Oo Tin Fuan, the chairperson of the school board of directors, who had chided MCA for being inefficient in handling the land acquisition exercise.

The Culture and Tourism Ministry plans to use 1,393.55 sq metres of the 0.81 ha school site for construction of the Seri Melayu Restaurant.

This has been strongly opposed by NGOs and the school's board of directors among others.

On the allegation that MCA did not provide updates to the school, Liow refuted this, saying that in fact, he had called up Oo to enlighten him on Nazri's assurance.

"I had also told him (Oo) not to worry about the dateline, as arrangements are being made," he said.

Liow added that he had, in August, written to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, but he was still awaiting a reply.

Asked when the school's board of directors would meet Nazri, Liow refused to reveal the date, saying, "I will let you know later."

Demolition at Chin Woo school 'suspended for now'

The demolition of the K-25 uranium-enrichment facility continues in a recent photograph. Allen Schubert, chief spokesman for URS-CH2M Oak Ridge, DOE's cleanup manager in Oak Ridge, said almost 25,000 cubic yards of waste will be generated by demolition of the last six-unit part of the building.

OAK RIDGE -- Demolition of the last section of K-25, an important part of U.S. nuclear history and once the world's largest building, will begin this week.

Mark Whitney, the U.S. Department of Energy's cleanup chief in Oak Ridge, last week said the demolition activities are scheduled to resume on or before today.

Demolition work at K-25 has been on hold for a few months while workers sampled and prepared the last remaining section, which comprises 6 of the original 54 units that processed uranium for use in atomic bombs and nuclear reactors.

This section of the building was segregated and saved for last because some of the equipment is contaminated with technetium-99, a slow-decaying radioactive material that poses special concerns -- especially if released into the environment. The strategy was to avoid cross-contaminating other areas of K-25 during the demolition project and isolate the waste materials and equipment bearing Tc-99, which will be disposed of separately.

Lots of waste

According to Allen Schubert, a spokesman for URS-CH2M Oak Ridge (UCOR), DOE's cleanup contractor in Oak Ridge, the demolition of the remaining units of K-25's East Wing will generate an estimated 22,378 cubic yards of waste. More than 90 percent of the waste will be transported to DOE's Oak Ridge landfill, which is designated for hazardous and radioactive waste from Superfund projects.

The rest of the waste, about 2,085 cubic yards, apparently will have too much Tc-99 to qualify for the Oak Ridge facility and will be shipped to the Nevada National Security Site for disposal.

Schubert said demolition of the K-25 building should be completed by the end of February. Some other related structures, including a retaining wall along the side of the East Wing, will be torn down by sometime in April, he said.

"By mid-June all building debris and wastes will be gone," Schubert said.

Contractors who will demolish the house where six children perished in a blaze started by their parents are to donate their fees to charity.

Work to knock down 18 Victory Road in Derby will begin on Monday and is expected to last three weeks, Derby City Council said.

Mick Philpott and his wife Mairead were both jailed in April along with friend Paul Mosley after being convicted of killing the couple's six children by setting fire to the three-bedroomed detached house.

Jade Philpott, 10, and her brothers John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six, and Jayden, five, died in the blaze in May 2011. Duwayne, 13, died days later in hospital.

Derby Demolition Ltd, John L Morgan & Sons, Maxplant Ltd and Ward Recycling have each agreed to donate their fee for the demolition work to Derbyshire Children's Holiday Centre in Skegness, which provides disadvantaged local children with holidays in the town.

The work will see 18 Victory Road and neighbouring property number 20 razed to the ground. New social housing is expected to be built on the site in due course.

A spokesman for Derby City Council said that Derby Demolition Ltd would begin to prepare the site with scaffolding, fencing and netting to the front, rear and sides, on Monday.

The process of demolition is likely to take up to three weeks; one week to prepare the site and a further two weeks to take down both properties, beginning with the outbuildings and roofing structures.

Mick Philpott was jailed for life with a minimum term of 15 years after being convicted of six counts of manslaughter following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court earlier this year.

The trial heard that Philpott used petrol to set fire to his home in Victory Road, Allenton, in a bid to frame his mistress during a child custody battle. His wife Mairead and Mosley were told they would each serve half of a 17-year sentence for their part in the plan to set fire to the property.

Beware of bait-and-switch tactics that advertise an unbelievably low rate and then immediately start tacking on up-charges or using scare tactics.

"One of the more common things that we hear about with air duct cleaning comes down to pricing. It's important for consumers to get written in-home estimates because a lot of times air duct cleaning is based on either the square footage of the home or the number of vents. A typical air duct cleaning might cost anywhere from $300-$500. If you find you're being offered a really low price, you're going to want to question it," Angie Hicks of Angies List said.
