Consider adding a rain sensor to your sprinkler system

    - September 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you have a sprinkler system or plan to have one installed, you should have a rain sensor attached to it, said Andy Veatch of Lawn Sprinkler Services.

Its something that people are already learning, he said.

Were seeing a lot more interest in improving the efficiency of irrigation systems to use less water, Veatch said.

A rain sensor will shut off a sprinkler system if its raining. The cost of a sensor is less than $175, he said; new ones are wireless so the labor of running a wire is not required.

Theres been a dramatic improvement in rain sensors, Veatch said; some will shut off during a rain and wait to see how much moisture falls before deciding whether to start back up again or stay shut off.

Veatch also recommends audits of sprinkler systems.

There can be some dramatic improvements by checking them out, he said. A company will put out catch cans to see how much water from each irrigation station is actually reaching the grass or plants and how much is evaporating into the air or being sprayed on sidewalks, streets or walls. He said one audit showed that the system being tested was only 8 percent efficient. Thats horrible whereas the average is in the 45 to 50 percent range. You cant achieve 100 percent, but you can get into the 70s pretty well. If you go from 8 to 10 percent efficiency to 75 percent, thats going to save you a lot of water.

The cost of an audit is about $350, and most yards take $400 to $700 in improvements, Veatch said.

The rain sensor is the least expensive and is going to give you the biggest bang for your water-conservation buck.

Having your system looked at professionally every year once or twice will probably help you save money, he said.

Pest control, economic globalization and the involvement of policy makers

A new special issue of NeoBiota journal has been published, following the 2012 meeting of the International Pest Risk Mapping Workgroup (IPRMW). The workshop was sponsored by the OECD's Co-operative Research Program on Biological Resource Management for Sustainable Agricultural Systems, and focused on pest risks in the foodchain. The new issue addresses the interface between pest risk science and policy in an attempt to secure adequate pest control measures against potential invasions accompanying economic globalization and the intensified movement of people and goods.

With the intensification of trade, the potential for translocation of harmful pests, weeds, and pathogens capable of impacting our crops, livestock and natural resources also grows. A special IPRMW meeting was held in Troms, Norway from 2326 July, 2012 to address this issue. The meeting was attended by 30 ecologists, economists, risk analysts and policy advisors from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, Hungary, France, Italy, and the United States. "The conference succeeded in stimulating new ideas about how to incorporate climate change, invasion dynamics, economics, and uncertainty into pest risk models and maps for invasive alien species, and how to communicate these improved results to biosecurity policy advisors", notes meeting convenor Dr Rob Venette, United States Forest Service.

The new issue of NeoBiota contains 12 research articles and an editorial reflecting the major outcomes and findings following the IPRMW meeting. The articles focus on issues of interactions between pest risk and climate change, policy and economics. Also featured is research about pest control and surveillance as well as the issue of pest risk and uncertainty, which is a key to the correct implementation of scientific research by policymakers.

"Since its first meeting in 2007, the IPRMW has made significant advances in pest risk modelling and mapping methods," explains Dr Darren Kriticos, CSIRO, Australia. "The meeting in Troms continued this tradition, with significant advances in economic model integration, a new understanding of the irreducible uncertainties in climate change forecasts, and the desirability of an adaptive management framework for dealing with these uncertainties, as well as new methods for dealing with other forms of uncertainty. Clearly, more work needs to be done in the area of risk communication and the improvement of niche modelling methods to produce timely and reliable models," he adds.

Get Gephardt Investigation Leads to State Charges Against Home Warranty Company

    - September 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

(KUTV) When Nick Williams bought his West Jordan home from a bank two years ago, he wanted to make sure he protected his investment. He bought this warranty from a company called Sensible Home Warranty.

[The warranty] covers everything in the home basically," Nick said.

Last February, buying seemed like a great decision when Nicks furnace stopped working.

It was like 15 degrees or something and I have a one year old kid.

Nick called Sensible Home Warranty and says he was instructed to hire a repairman and send Sensible Home Warranty the bill.

"I sent the invoice to them, emailed it to them, [and] called back later that day to verify that they had received it, Nick said.

Nick waited two months for his $661 refund and when it didn't come, Nick says he sent and resent the receipt. With no results, Nick asked to speak to a manager but was told that no managers are available. Unable to get the warranty company to honor their end of the deal, Nick decided to Get Gephardt.

We began by calling Sensible Home Warranty at their headquarters in Sparks, Nevada, but no one ever called us back.

As Get Gephardt dug deeper, we discovered that Sensible Home Warranty was ordered to stop doing business in the state of Washington. The order says they were "Engaging in or transacting the unauthorized business of insurance...in the state of Washington."

Sensible Home Warranty has also been slapped with an "F" rating from the Better Business Bureau; the bureau reports receiving more than 1000 complaints.
