When Cypress resident Michelle Majors leaves home, she doesnt have to worry about intruders, fires or even forgetting to turn off her lights.

With the touch of a button, Majors can view live footage of each room in her home, adjust the temperature or turn off the lights. Her home security system is also directly connected with area emergency responders.

But perhaps most striking is how commonplace the technology has become. Once reserved for wealthy home or business owners, the new home security system has been available to Comcast customers in Houston since 2010 at affordable prices.

The system can be configured to fit almost anyones lifestyle, said Mitch Bowling, senior vice president and general manager of New Business for Comcast Cable Corporation. Its the number one rated Comcast product by our consumers.

As part of the companys professional monitoring and remote energy management services, Comcast equips homes with lighting controls, water and carbon monoxide sensors, digital thermostats, live video monitoring and alarms all controlled remotely over the Internet.

The two available security packages, Secure and Control, both offer similar equipment, but Secure automatically connects to first responders if an alarm is tripped. Otherwise, homeowners can opt to receive custom text and e-mail alerts.

Prices range from $14.95 to $19.95 for Control and $39.95 to $49.95 a month for Secure. Installation ranges from $99 to $399, depending on the extent of the security.

The target market is families with children, said Bowling. "They have a lot going on in their life. They want the peace of mind of protecting their children.

People with second homes or pet owners can also benefit, he said. Majors decided have the Secure package installed to make sure her children are safe.

It seemed like a really good deal, and my husband travels some, she said. And I do have a 16 and 8-year-old, so it does give me peace of mind when hes gone.

On Aug. 31 at approximately 7 a.m., an alert citizen reported that a male was spraying lighter fluid on fences and trying to light them on fire. A description and direction of travel was provided. Other witnesses advised that the male was going in and out of peoples yards. Police located a 17-year-old local male a short time later. He was arrested and later released to his parent on conditions to appear in court, not to consume liquor and not to possess incendiary devices. There was no ignition or apparent damage. Police are still investigating. Police would also like to recognize the alert citizens who observed this behavior, got a great description and direction of travel and immediately called police.

One-year probation for possessing alcohol

On Aug. 30 at approximately 11:30 p.m., Merritt RCMP checked a vehicle that was stopped in the Diamond Vale Elementary School parking lot. Police located three people standing outside of the vehicle and five more inside. While talking with the group, one male got out of the vehicle and started walking away from the group, carrying two bottles with him. Police stopped the male, an 18-year-old local man, and found that he was under conditions not to possess or consume alcohol. He was arrested, remanded in custody and appeared before a provincial court judge on Sept. 4. He pleaded guilty and was credited for time served and will be on probation for one year.

Lytton man arrested for assaulting local

On Saturday, Aug. 31 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Merritt RCMP were dispatched to assist provincial ambulance regarding an assault that occurred at a local hotel in the 2100 block of Quilchena Avenue. Investigation revealed that a 42-year-old male from Lytton assaulted a local 24-year-old male for unknown reasons. The victim suffered cuts, bruises and a broken ankle. Police were provided a description of the suspect as well as a direction of travel. Police located the suspect, identified as Lincoln Henry. He was arrested for assault causing bodily harm and remanded in custody where he appeared before a provincial court judge on Sept. 3. Although the judge agreed to release him on bail, Henry could not perfect his bail so remains in custody.

Man arrested hours after previous release

On Sept. 3 at approximately 11:30 p.m., Merritt RCMP received a report that a local 67-year-old male was intoxicated and causing problems in a residence in Lower Nicola. Police attended and located William Hance, who was found to be breaching his previously-imposed court condition of abstaining from consuming alcohol. He was arrested and held in custody until he sobered up and could take care of himself. He was released from custody to appear in provincial court in September and to further abstain from alcohol. He was released from custody at 10:00 a.m. on Sept. 4.

At 12:20 p.m. two hours and 20 minutes after he was released Hance was found by police behind the dumpster in the 1700 block of Garcia Street. He was found consuming alcohol, breaching a condition of his release from custody earlier that day. He was arrested and remanded in custody to appear before a provincial court judge on Sept. 5. He was subsequently released on bail and will appear in court later in September.

Minella For Value ready to register first victory over fences

John Nallens Minella For Value can provide the answer to the modest Eventus Beginners Chase at Galway this evening.

The seven-year-old is also relatively experienced at this game and todays test will be his fourth attempt over fences.

His last outing over fences came two runs back, beaten a length into second by Black Benny at Roscommon.

His latest appearance was over flights at Bellewstown, justifying favouritism with a hard-earned length and a quarter defeat of The Shaughran.

Bryan Cooper, recently returned from long-term injury, can guide Captain Arceus to success in the City Publicans Charity Hurdle.

Dessie Hughes charge, winner of a valuable handicap at Fairyhouse in early April, had his first run since then at Bellewstown last month.

It was certainly a promising effort, as he failed to concede Giants Quest 10lbs, going under by three parts of a length.
