Weve repeatedly cited in the past that people in the Philippines, especially those in Metro Manila, arehuge adopters of new gadgets such as smartphones and tablets. Plus, they consider their mobile devices their most important pieces of technology. It also follows that the people would be very inclined to access the internet through their devices.

In line with this trend, the local government of Manilaannounced its rather ambitious project of installing wi-fi at waiting sheds in the capital. For a start, 12 innovative waiting sheds will be spread across the city. Whether it looks to construct brand new waiting sheds altogether or simply equip the old and rusty waiting sheds with wi-fi is unclear.

Prior to this, some buses have been prohibited from entering the city, which caused the city government to create additional loading and unloading areas and more inconvenient stops for some commuters. Now, putting up wi-fi connections at waiting sheds seems to be its new action to offer commuters. The idea is to allow the commuters to access the internet while waiting for buses or jeepneys.

Providing free wi-fi access sounds awesome. But doing so out in the open, in the streets of Manila, just wont work. For one, only a few courageous people will even dare to pull their phones from their pockets. Why? Because whether the government admits it or not, a huge number of snatchers and pickpockets are scattered around the city.

The commuters who succumb to the available internet connection will simply risk losing their phones, or worse, risk their own safety. As Filipinos know, bad guys will use any means to snatch peoples things. They might carry guns or knives in case their culprits fight back. Looking at the scenario this way, it could bring about higher crime rates in Manila.

I think this goes the same for other cities in the metropolitan area. Manila is still far from neighboring countries like Singapore, where people can practically pull out their phones in public places or while walking on the streets. Sure, free wi-fi access is cool, but before such a thing could work in Manila, I believe the government should strengthen its efforts to catch the bad guys in the city, which could take a while.

MANILA, PhilippinesWaiting sheds equipped with free Wi-Fi service and solar-powered streetlights will soon be installed in Manila, in line with the local governments revival plans for the city.

Vice Mayor Francisco Isko Moreno Domagoso earlier this week said a private company would shoulder the cost of the Internet connection and the building of waiting sheds at designated bus stops.

On Friday, Mayor Joseph Estrada signed a memorandum of agreement with Global Gold Goal Inc., represented by its president and chief executive officer Frederick Ordoez, for the donation of almost 10,000 solar-powered LED streetlights worth P2.2 billion.

These projects are timely because the city has no funds. The private companies will build these at no cost to the city and yet the people will benefit, Estrada said.

The city is billed around P18 million monthly for the streetlights power supply alone, an amount which Estrada said could be reduced with the installation of solar-powered lamps. City Hall expects them to cover Manilas six districts in three phases within two years.

Both the waiting sheds and streetlights will be fitted with monitoring cameras, as well as LED signboards for advertisements.

SPRINGFIELD , -- Now's a good time to spruce up the kitchen or bathroom, if you've been putting that off. Getting out the toolbox means money in the bank.

During the recession, the amount sellers recouped from remodeling projects dropped significantly. But now for the first time in six years, the housing market is improving and so is the return on investments.

Dee Wawra just bought a 30-year-old home in Willard. He gave the kitchen a new modern look.

"We like to entertain. We like them to come over and be comfortable," he said.

Nearly $2,000 later, he's pleased with the facelift.

"I'm hopeful I will get that return, the market has changed lately," said Wawra.

Experts say the improved market is giving confidence for folks like Wawra to get their hands dirty.

"What people are doing is saying I may not want to move to another house in a year or two from now, but it's a great time to remodel now so I can enjoy those changes," said Ken Thrasher, with Home Builders Association.

Remodeling companies like Rock Solid say their business has doubled. More folks are updating their kitchens and bathrooms.

Experts recommend get a few opinions and estimates before you get to work. If you hire someone, make sure they're with a reputable group like the Home Builders Association.

Some stations have failing floors, broken cabinetry, leaking roofs and offices that need to be expanded or moved to make them more visible to the public. In the Otis Orchards station, the workout room for the crews is a corner of the truck bay with exercise equipment init.

Rider said he would like to add on to the Otis Orchards station to create a workout room and a sewing room. The sewing machines the department owns are used to repair the turnout gear worn by firefighters, which saves the department money, Rider said. The other stations identified for remodeling projects are Evergreen, Millwood and LibertyLake.

There is also $30,000 in repairs needed to fix damage to the new Administration Building caused by a flock of woodpeckers, Rider said. The birds showed up this spring, drilling holes in the corbels, which are a series of brackets along the edge of theroof.
