By Edie Johnson GOSHEN Tuesday night's forum on the Orange County Government Center sounded at times like an art appreciation class, as renown architects tried to make the audience see the misunderstood treasure in a new light.
Architect Sam Liebman was associate architect on the original project with the world-famous architect Paul Rudolph, who designed the 1967 building. He spoke admiringly about the building's inordinate strength, thanks to its 5,000 supporting concrete blocks. The mortar is of the same strength and material, fully 20 percent higher than what was required.
The concrete skirt and bearing walls make it virtually indestructible, unlike the more current style of steel-framed building, which is neither as durable nor as fireproof. It would be almost impossible, economically, to erect a building of that strength today. The original $6.7 million cost, adjusted for inflation, would cost $77.3 million today.
And the mold that some county officials say has destroyed the building?
"Mold does not grow on clean concrete, only on organic material," Liebman said. "It just needs to be cleaned."
Another architect, Joseph Giovannini, who writes extensively on architecture for The New York Times, said, "How lucky you are to have this masterpiece. It was the best of its time."
The center came perilously close to being razed, especially after Hurricane Irene flooded the building, which remains closed two years later. Even before the hurricane, the county executive, Edward Diana, was pushing hard to demolish the building and build a new one. He has long complained of the center's leaky roofs and spreading mold. Other county residents fond of Goshen's Victoriana found it hard to love the modern building and its array of concrete blocks. Many local residents, if not most, say it's ugly.

Hasenstab Architects recently designed a 2,300-sqaure-foot building for Cleveland Clinic to house one of the worlds most powerful MRI machines. It is the only 7 Tesla full-body MRI in northeast Ohio, and approximately one in about a dozen in the country. The project required the use of a crane to lower the 80,000-pound magnet, manufactured by Agilent, through an opening in the roof.
To see the equipment finally arrive and lifted into place was a relief that that the project was finally close to becoming operational, said David Everhard, principal and project manager for Hasenstab Architects. The crane operators made the whole process look simple and the control they had when lowering and positioning the unit in the room through the hatch was incredible.
The delivery of the equipment wasnt the only challenge of this project; the design of the room that houses the MRI was just as intricate. Poor soil conditions required the use of auger cast pilings to help stabilize the site. Additionally, due to the machines extreme sensitivity to vibration, an isolated foundation was critical.
The challenge is that each 7 Tesla MRI is unique and actually a product of two separate companies, Siemens and Agilent, Everhard said. Because each machine is different, there was no definitive protocol for the design of the isolation system so we ended up designing for the worst case scenario.
As a result, a block of concrete equal to the weight of the magnet was installed to support the MRI and protect against any vibration that could potential mar its high definition images. The floor was also isolated on its perimeter from any part of the building foundation and walls. In addition, the concrete block was designed so that if vibration became a problem, the MRI could be separated and raised from the floor using pneumatic cushions to float it.
The room environment that houses the MRI was also an important consideration during the design process. The room is shielded from all radio interference by a continuous copper skin on the inside of the room. Everything inside the room had to be rigidly attached and could not be made of any iron material that could be drawn toward the magnet or disrupt the sensitive field. Even safety devices such as fire extinguishers must be non-magnetic since any object containing iron can become a dangerous missile if it gets too close to the intense magnetic field.
Siemens, the manufacturer of the MRIs technical hardware and software, will spend nearly a month calibrating and fine tuning the magnet. Once the final adjustments are complete, Cleveland Clinic with officially move into the facility. Although the 7T MRI has not been approved for clinical use in the U.S., it can be used for medical research involving diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimers and epilepsy. With the aid of this new machine, neuroscience researchers will be able to see clearer images of the brain, sometimes down to the cellular level.

West Campus Housing is about to be added to the long list of construction projects taking place across Texas A&M University.
Representatives from Mackey Mitchell Architects and BGK Architects held an open forum Thursday in Cain Hall seeking student input on the planned residence hall expansion. The construction, planned for partial completion by 2015, will add 4,200 new beds to on-campus living and aims to provide enough space to house an entire A&M freshmen class.
John Burse, principle with Mackey Mitchell Architects, said student input today about the future of such an important expansion is critical to making sure the next generation of students fully enjoys the on-campus experience.
You are stewards of this processand you represent the future residents of Texas A&M, said Burse to those in attendance.
The forum devoted about 30 minutes to discussions between architects and students about possible room layouts and their respective pros and cons. Topics included roommate privacy, apartment-style living rooms and restroom layouts in double and four-person suites.
Tim Broderick, junior poultry science major and executive vice president of the Residence Hall Association, said such collaboration is important because the project will ultimately impact the living experience of thousands of freshmen in the years to come.
I think student input is the most important thing because [the architects] are able to hear what students will use, Broderick said. This is one of the precursors to put potentially an entire freshmen year class on campus.You want to make [the new housing] somewhere where students want to go, want to be and somewhere that will enhance their college experience.
During the forum, Hullabaloo Hall and the student reaction to its many new on-campus amenities was frequently cited as a standard by which the new housing would be designed. Dan Mitchell, principle with Mackey Mitchell Architects, said it came down learning what went right and what needs to be improved in order to create the best designs for the new housing.
