Demolition on Brewster projects to begin

    - September 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

(WXYZ) - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing isexpected to hold a press conference Wednesday morning to formally cue the first stage of demolition on the Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan is also expected to be in attendance at the press conference which will begin at 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of Beaubien and Alfred Streets in Detroit.

Bing has said in the past that the city was committed to working with Housing and Urban Development officials and the Detroit Housing Commission on the demolition.

The tall brick and mortar units which have six story buildings and four-14 story towers had been one of the oldest public housing projects in the country.

It was once the home of hundreds of auto, manufacturing, and other workers providing for their families. The low-income housings sat a little northeast of downtown Detroit.

It was also once the home of Diana Ross and The Supremes. Smokey Robinson visited family there, and Joe Louis learned to box at the recreation center. But that was decades ago. Now they have become an eyesore with their broken out windows, graffiti walls, and trash everywhere.

The buildings have been vacant since 2008 when people moved out and crime took over.

On Wednesday, crews will level the buildings as part of a plan to fight blight. Mayor Dave Bing has promised to demolish three thousand abandoned structures in Detroit during his time in office.

The project is funded by a federal grant of $6.5 million dollars.

Demolition of Plainville's old Linden Street School won't be on ballot

    - September 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

PLAINVILLE The fate of the old Linden Street School has not been sealed yet.

Earlier this year the Town Council unanimously approved a report from the Old Linden Street School Committee recommending the former school be torn down.

Because the cost of demolition is estimated at over $1 million, it would have to be approved by voters in a referendum. There had been talk about putting it on the ballot in the November election.

However, Town Council Chair Kathy Pugliese explained this week that the Capital Projects Building Committee also has to recommend demolition in order for the town to go forward and ask residents to approve the cost.

It wont be on the ballot this fall, said Pugliese.

The Capital Projects Building Committee began meeting again in June after being dormant for some time.

The committees current task is putting together a bonding package for a series of capital improvements at schools, other town buildings and town roads, Pugliese said.

The school demolition could be part of that package or be voted on separately. The committee is still working on the final bonding package and getting bids and cost estimates.

Architects back Gov't Center renovation at forum

Just a few days short of the two-year anniversary of the closure of the Orange County Government Center, advocates for renovation gathered Tuesday at the Goshen Senior Center to hear architects praise the Government Center design, a vision of famed architect Paul Rudolph's noted Brutalist style. GOSHEN It's cheaper, quicker and will yield a better result.

That's why five panelists during a forum Tuesday called for preserving rather than replacing the Orange County Government Center. More than 125 people attended the even, hosted by a coalition of groups advocating for renovation.

Much of the night's vitriol was directed at County Executive Ed Diana, who speakers accused of distorting cost estimates and damage assessments in arguing for demolition of the Paul Rudolph-designed building.

"We have reached the point where they are completely out of reasons to built a new building," said retired architect Harvey Berg. "All these years of deception failed."

The Government Center closed two years and three days ago, after the building suffered damage from Hurricane Irene. Legislators voted in February to renovate, but Diana has commissioned designs that include knocking down part of the complex.

Renovation would cost at least $20 million less than replacement, said architect Francis Wickham, and could be totally finished in mere months.

Speakers emphasized the complex's historical significance and asthetically pleasing design, considered a prime example of the brutalist style. "It's a space of invention rather than convention," said architect Joseph Giovannini. "It's a heroic space that gives the public dignity and honor."
