Window Nation Ranks #12 Nationally Among Replacement Contractors, According to Remodeling Magazine

    - September 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

CLEVELAND, Aug. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Remodeling magazine has ranked Window Nation #12 among window providers and replacement contractors nationwide in Remodeling 550, the magazine's annual list of the nation's biggest home improvement companies. The list appears in the August issue.

The honor comes after a year in which Window Nation has seen revenue growth of more than 30 percent in the Cleveland area. Along with its main office and showroom in Twinsburg, Window Nation has also opened two more showrooms in west Cleveland and the Akron/Canton area in the last 12 months. The company has hired additional employees in the region, increasing its staff size by 20 percent.

Earlier this year, Remodeling magazine named Window Nation to the Remodeling Big50, a group of top national remodelers cited for their "exemplary business practices, management skills, community service, design and craftsmanship," according to the magazine. Most of Window Nation's products sold in the Cleveland area have been designed specifically for Cleveland's dynamic weather and are manufactured in Ohio.

"Our employees and our customers are the reason for our high ranking in Remodeling 550," says Window Nation President Harley Magden. "We're proud of our employees offering the best products and service in our field, and we're grateful to our customers for choosing us." This is the second year that Window Nation has appeared in Remodeling 550. The company moves up from its 2012 rank of 16.

Ninety-three percent of Window Nation's customers say they would recommend the company to others. The survey is conducted by GuildQuality, the leading provider of customer satisfaction surveying and reporting for the construction and real estate industry in North America.

Window Nation was founded by brothers Harley and Aaron Magden after working for years in their father's window business. The company operates in Ohio, North and South Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Learn more at http://www.windownation.com or call 216/464-4141.

Renovation Solutions: 6 costly mistakes people make when remodeling

    - September 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Windows, front doors, garage doors, shutters, paint colors, light fixtures, mailboxes and even house numbers should be intentionally selected to be consistent with and enhance the style of your home.

Trina Knudsen, 2013 Trina Knudsen, Photographer

Remodeling usually represents a substantial investment of time and energy, but it shouldnt cost more than it has to. Most people experience a major remodel only once or twice in their lifetime, so there isnt much room for trial and error. You want to get it right the first time. Here are some of the more common costly mistakes you should try to avoid.

    1. Doing projects out of sequence

There is nothing more costly for a remodeling project than doing the same project twice due to poor planning and improper project sequencing. Dont redo the landscaping and add a deck when you are planning an addition next year. Usually people do projects as they can afford them maybe windows this year and new deck next year. There is nothing wrong with this idea as long as you have a master plan you are working toward.

For instance, we hate it when clients come to us wanting a home remodel only to find out they just replaced all their windows. Windows have a huge impact on the architectural design of a house. Working around the new windows is going to limit the design. Often clients end up at least having to pay to remove and re-install some of the windows, and some end up having to buy new windows again to match the style of their dream home.

    2. Blowing the budget

The client who stays within a budget is the client who plans ahead. The more detailed the project plans are, the more accurate the bids and the more realistic the budget. Making all the selections of finishes and equipment prior to commencing construction will allow you to get the big picture and consider the complete cost of the project. In addition, we recommend reserving 5 to 10 percent of the proposed budget as a contingency for the unexpected challenges of a remodeling project. Architects and engineers do the best they can to anticipate potential issues, but it is only when you cut into the walls, floors and ceiling that you know the whole story.

    3. Gutting too soon

We cringe when we see someone decide they want to remodel and start tearing down walls without a plan. First, the planning stage takes weeks or even months. It may be three to six months from initial project inception before permits are secured and construction can begin. If you are overly excited about beginning the project, you may end up living in a construction zone far longer than you need to or be faced with rebuilding walls you could have saved when you took a sledgehammer to your house without a plan.

Bad plumber leaves Canton family dry

    - September 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

CANTON, Ohio - Melanie Crowl was hoping to repair a plumbing leak in the basement of her Canton home, but the plumber she hired took her money and never finished the job.

Crowl explained how she and her husband were left without water service for more than a week after her plumber left her water system leaking and partially disassembled.

"I never thought this would happen to me. Unfortunately, I'm just an over-trusting person," Crowl said.

"All the pipes were leaking. They weren't put together right. It just was a mess. "When we had the second plumber come in, he said none of it was right."

Crowl showed NewsChannel5 the small hand written receipt she was given after she claims she paid the plumber $600 up front. The plumber was listed in the classified section of the Canton newspaper under plumbing and remodeling, and boasted low rates.

Donald Crowl asked the plumber some of the right questions as he was lining up the services over the phone.

"'Are you licensed, bonded and insured?' The plumber said 'Yes I am,'" Donald Crowl said. "When he got here I asked him 'Can I see your credentials?' He said 'I don't have them with me.'"

Crowl told NewsChannel5 the plumber identified himself as "Tom" from Plumbing and Home Services, but Crowl never got the plumbers last name.

The Crowls and NewsChannel5 have been trying to reach the company by phone, but all calls have gone unanswered and the company voicemail box has been full for the past three days.

Finally, the family had to hire a second plumber for more than $400 just to restore water service to their home.
