THE architects behind the controversial design of the Perth Arena have won the highest honour at the Australian Institute of Architects WA Architecture Awards.
In a joint venture, ARM Architecture and Cameron Chisholm Nicol took home the George Temple Poole Award, which is presented each year to the project judged most impressive of all the award winners in each category.
The George Temple Poole jury viewed an impressive array of outstanding architecture in determining this year's award winner, but ultimately Perth Arena came out on top, also taking home another three awards.
"Visually the Perth Arena is a building that delivers an aesthetic unlike anything previously existing in Western Australia," the jury said in awarding Perth Arena.
"And regardless of whether it is revered or reviled it generates enormous interest and stands as an outstanding example of what architects contribute to the built environment.
"The architects have delivered a building of great visual complexity, outstanding functionality, a building that has captured the imagination of the general public and delivers for Perth an iconic piece of public infrastructure."
The awards, which honour excellence in the design and construction industry, were presented at an Academy Awards-style ceremony at the Perth Concert Hall.
Another major city development, Brookfield Place by Hassell and Fitzpatrick and Partners, also featured prominently in the awards, taking out the Margaret Pitt Morison Award for Heritage, the John Septimus Roe Award for Urban Design and the Ross Chisholm and Gil Nicol Award for Commercial Architecture.
All Western Australian named and Architecture Award winners will progress to the Australian Institute of Architects National Awards to be held in November.

Boston Society of Architects
A repurposed billboard structure from the exhibit.
By Jeremy C. Fox, Town Correspondent
A new exhibit at the Boston Society of Architects downtown gallery examines how the cities around the world are rethinking their infrastructures and adapting them to new and expanded uses to benefit residents and visitors, the society announced.
Curated and designed by urban design director Scott Burnham, Reprogramming the City: Opportunities for Urban Infrastructure, is on display at the BSA Space inside the Atlantic Wharf complex.
The exhibit looks at innovations from more than 20 cities including Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, and of course, Boston.
Designers, architects, and cities themselves are realizing that in an era of limited resources, there is a vast amount of untapped potential in the existing physical stock of the city, Burnham said in a statement released by the society.
A new approach of designing with the existing materials of the city is bringing a new resourcefulness and sense of opportunity to the urban landscape, he said. This new spirit and attitude is not only expanding the functionality of urban objects and areas but [also] increasing the creative spirit of the city itself.
Among the projects on display is City Meter, a collaboration between Burnham, Mayo Nissen, and the City of Boston, that explores the repurposing of parking meters to better serve city residents.
Burnham, a Boston University graduate, has led projects in 11 cities around the world, including the $32 million project Urbis, The Centre for Urban Culture in Manchester, England, and leading the Trust Design project in Amsterdam.
