Delia Hughes was battered to death in her home with a hammer by Jamie Boult, a court heard today
A man battered an 85-year-old grandmother to death with a lump hammer- because her patio doors were open, a court heard today.
Jamie Boult, 25, entered the ground floor waterside flat of Delia Hughes in Southampton, Hampshire, and planned to 'kill whoever was in there', it is alleged.
He rained down eight blows on the pensioners head from behind, knocking her to the ground with the heavy and bloodied weapon.
She was left with a broken skull and severely damaged brain.
Boult had hidden behind her bedroom door after tripping on the patio blinds, and pounced when the frail widow went to investigate the noise.
Prosecutor William Mousley QC told Winchester Crown Court that Boult 'brought the hammer down hard from above his head, saying nothing'.

The court heard he had suffered from "social phobia" since he was 13 and had previously been on anti-depressants

A loner battered an OAP to death with a lump hammer because her patio doors were open, a court was told.
Jamie Boult, 25, crept into 85-year-old Delia Hughes flat and hit her over the head eight times, a jury heard yesterday.
Boult, Southampton, Hampshire, denies murder at Winchester Crown Court, where he is also on trial for the aggravated burglary of another property.
William Mousley QC, prosecuting, said: "She went into her bedroom where she was attacked and killed by Jamie Boult who was hiding behind the door waiting for her to come in.
"He was a complete stranger who had found his way into her flat without her knowledge armed with a heavy lump hammer.
"He hit her on the back of the head with the hammer causing her to fall to the floor where he continued his attack with more hammer blows.
"Having killed her or at the very least left her mortally wounded, he stole her jewellery and left her.

When it comes to lighting, consumers have hundreds if not thousands of choices. While many of these lights use traditional incandescent bulbs, the use of LEDs and compact fluorescent bulbs are becoming standard practice. Price can run from $10 to hundreds. Style can vary from rustic to over-the-top contemporary.
Outdoor lighting is not that much different than interior lighting. The main difference lies in the weatherproof nature of the lights housing or its configuration. Another element in outdoor lighting is the use of low-voltage lights. Compared to line voltage lights, low-voltage light systems are often installed by the homeowner, which can be a great cost benefit to hiring and bringing in a full fledged electrical contractor.
Types of Low-Voltage Outdoor Lights
Area lights: These lights illuminate larger areas, like a front porch.
Spot lighting: Got a really cool sculpture or exotic plant in your yard? Spot lighting can bring it to life.
Flood lighting: This is the big brother to the spot light. Flood lights can wash entire walls or groups of plants and other garden features.
Step lighting: Nothing will wake someone up quicker than a tumble down a few stairs. Aside from spilling your evening beveragebumps and bruises are never any fun.
In years past nearly every one of these low voltage lights would have be supplied with a heat generating, inefficient incandescent bulb. Today many of these are equipped with compact florescent or LED technology.

Business background helps interior designer succeed
By M.L. Dehm HBJ Freelance Writer
SNOHOMISH Local interior designer Tanna Barnecut, a design writer for Snohomish Magazine and owner of Tanna By Design, has been named as first-place winner in the 2012 Interior Design Society's Designer of the Year Awards for the category for Kitchens under $49,999.
The Designer of the Year Awards recognize outstanding achievement in residential interior design among Interior Design Society members across the nation. Barnecut has also been honored by the Central Washington Home Builders Tour of Homes and was a Reader's Choice award Best of the Northwest Silver Winner last year.
The project that won an award from the Interior Design Society was a speculative remodel for a Seattle firm that flips homes in the $500,000 to $1 million range. The project house was a dated 1950s era home that had been trashed by the previous occupants.
"The existing floor plan presented fundamental challenges and was in much need of an up-to-date final design," she said.
Barnecut was chosen for the job based on her reputation as an interior designer and her willingness to get the job done quickly. She completed all of the layout drawings, color palettes and plans for the finishes within two weeks.
Barnecut really enjoyed this finished kitchen, she explained, because, although it was in a high-end home, it had elements that people could do in their own homes on a tighter budget. The old kitchen was gutted and a wall removed to offer a more open feeling. The original hardwood flooring was salvaged, but the cabinets had to be replaced and a kitchen island was added.
The finished kitchen caters to today's lifestyle with a much more modern feel, Barnecut said. She offers pictures of the completed work, along with other before-and-after photos, on her Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/tannabydesigninteriors, and website, http://www.tannabydesign.com.

Now thatsummer is upon us,homeowners are being reminded of security precautions.
With the nicer weather and longer evenings, people are thinking of vacations and summer fun. These welcomed activities can serve as a distraction to people thinking about home safety and security, says Cpl. Scott MacRae, RCMP Media Relations Officer. The police want people to enjoy summer and not become a victim to those would be thieves.
Summer Safety Tips:
Keep doors in your home closed and locked including your garage doors. An open door is an invitation.
Be a good neighbour and alert police to any unusual or suspicious activity in your community.
Plan for vacations by having your mail and newspapers stopped or having a friend pick them up. Leave inside lights on timers to create the impression that your house is occupied. Be sure to set your alarm system. Have a lawn service or neighbour mow your lawn.
Avoid home improvement scams and deception burglaries by taking a pro-active approach. Be particularly alert to anyone in your neighbourhood looking to perform home repairs and asking to gain entry into your home. Ask to see identification and let them know you are going to call and get verification from their company before allowing them inside. If they are legitimate, they won't mind the wait.
Ensure sheds are also secure this summer by installing enhanced locks. Many of us don't consider the shed or garage when looking at home security; however the items they contain are often very expensive, items like lawnmowers and power tools and often targeted by thieves.
Consideration should also be given to installing a security alarm, cameras or sensor lights. Any of these could enhance home security and deter thieves.

LOS ANGELES, June 26, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Top-Home-Security-Systems.net, a website that is devoted to providing consumers with in-depth reviews of home security systems, has just launched its completely redesigned website. The site now has an entirely new and much more user-friendly look as well as an updated theme.
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130626/CG38752)
Over the years, home security systems have grown in popularity. Many people are comforted by the knowledge that their home is protected in case of a break in, and some customers can even get a lower rate on their homeowners insurance if they have a security system installed. However, deciding which company is best and offers the specific features they are looking for can be a time consuming and confusing process involving hours of online research and phone calls.
Thanks to Top-Home-Security-Systems.net, consumers now have a one-stop shop when it comes to learning about many of the home security companies that are available. In addition to reading in-depth information about five of the top companies, the site also includes helpful and unbiased reviews of the businesses.
Using the newly-revised website is easy; homeowners are welcome to visit the site at any time and browse through the vast amount of information. The companies are all featured prominently on the home page; clicking on the name of each company will bring people to a page filled with more information and reviews.
For example, FrontPoint Security is currently listed in the top spot on the home page. Priced between $34.99 and $49.99 per month, the company provides protection against burglaries, fire, floods and CO poisoning. Because it relies on cellular technology and not a landline, burglars cannot cut any wires to try to disconnect the system.
"The 100 percent cellular feature is almost 100 percent burglar proof," an article on the website noted, adding that because fires can start when no one is home, a quick response from the fire department is crucial in saving lives and property.
"With FrontPoint systems, help can be sent quickly."
ADT Security is another company that is reviewed and featured on Top-Home-Security-Systems.net. The company, which has been in business for over 138 years, is priced between $35.99 and $49.99 a month and features 24/7 monitoring, smart phone application, and burglary, fire, environmental and safety alarms.
