If you're browsing for easily dissectible summer jams, look elsewhere. Each of this week's selections is a veritable cherry bomb of textures and statements. Be prepared for songs to end in completely different places from where they began, and to be pulled along for the ride. Don't let this feeling scare you off, though. It's how you know you've actually gotten somewhere.
Porches -- "Franklin the Flirt"
What threatens to start as a sardonic slow jam quickly blooms into something beautiful, pained and unexpectedly intricate. Don't for a second think that the song's coating of morose grime has anything to do with a lack of upkeep. On the contrary, singer Aaron Maine's wordplay, atop the instrumentation's plod, carries all the stark elegance of a ballerina pirouetting on an oil barge. To wit: "The purple eyelids sag/There are diamonds in the weed sack/And love's a purple drag/I always go back." A band to be watched, ideally through the saline smudge of breakup tears.
John Vanderslice -- "Harlequin Press"
A hiccupping, off-kilter meditation from Vanderslice's recently released "Dagger Beach," "Harlequin Press" is producer porn at its densest and most rewarding. Those familiar with Vanderslice's studio work -- he's recorded artists like Deerhoof and Thao and the Get Down Stay Down -- know that he's a maestro of the sweet slathered atop the jagged. This tune is no exception, with layers of acoustic guitar fluttering above warped, crackling tom-tom thwacks. Even the lyrics seem to obey such a dichotomy: "She replaced the lovebirds with pornographers," Vanderslice sings. "The love scenes with brutal murder."

Kill-J -- "Phoenix"
Here's the agreement: We can all stop freaking out about Scandinavian synth-pop at the exact moment it stops being so goddamn good all the time. Until then, there's Kill-J, whose "Phoenix" ebbs and bends with a cyborg grace. Half machine gun vibrato and half vocoded trickery, the tune is similar to Vanderslice's in its alchemy; two otherwise incompatible sonic textures click into place with exquisite results. You end up feeling confessed to, seduced, and cold shouldered with the sort of rapid-fire nonchalance that makes this genre so enduring.
Schoolboy Q -- "Collard Greens," Ft. Kendrick Lamar
What sort of ground is broken with a statement like "Kush be my fragrance/We love marijuana?" What possible revelation lurks below a line like "Shot glass super-sized/She gonna get some dick tonight?" It's easy to write off Schoolboy Q's brand of rap as lazily boastful, nihilistic, and ultimately empty. But to do that would be to ignore an increasingly common (and interesting) struggle that's beginning to surface in modern hip-hop: How do artists address and dissect the blatant emptiness of certain luxuries when their genre thrives so steadily on them? In some cases, by an outright rejection. But more often, as "Collard Greens" suggests, by complex and problematic means -- by diving in headfirst, rooting around, and working through whatever surfaces.

The High Five: Great New Jams from John Vanderslice, Porches, and More
You might think nothings as straightforward as enjoying good eats in the sunshine or beer under the stars, but as weve shown in several posts on the location of sidewalk cafes, there are complex regulations and touchy politics involved in the citys al fresco scene.
We wont be serving so much debate this time, though; instead, were more in clarification mode. Some commenters were confused by the difference between sidewalk cafes and patios. Were clearing that up right now, and well be throwing in a handy map of last seasons patio locations, to boot.
One likely source of confusion is the fact that waiters often ask patrons to dine on the patio, but then direct people to seats on the sidewalk. Regardless, there is a difference and its one that matters.
In Chicago, when you dine at a sidewalk cafe, youre dining on public property (the sidewalk), but patios are located on private property. Patios allow restaurants and taverns to better control the outdoor dining experience. They can also use space that would otherwise go to waste: rooftops, backyards or areas that abut parking lots. The sidewalk cafes? Yes, they can be customized, but only so much.
So where are they?
After breaking down city data, we learned that in 2012, there were 593 active patio licenses, 412 of which operated in the summer.
That means there are far fewer patios than sidewalk cafes (again, heres the map for the latter), but patios are (slightly) more evenly distributed across the city. The South Side, for example, has almost no sidewalk cafes, but it has slightly more patios, many of which are within closed areas. Theres a cluster of patios at five businesses at 11th Street between Pulaski Road and Kedzie Avenue. Theres a similar story to tell on the citys Northwest Side.
Chicago ordinances govern both patios and cafes, specifically their hours and seasons of operation. However, when it comes to patios, the regulations seem to only apply if the business is serving alcohol.
Theres a reason for that, but prepare yourself for the logic. According to Jennifer Lipford, spokesperson for the citys Department of Business and Consumer Affairs, city liquor licenses apply only to enclosed spaces, but the patio license is effectively an add-on. In other words, any business that serves booze must pay nearly $2,000 every two years to serve alcohol to their patrons during nice weather.
Which maybe explains why the patio license was formerly called a beer garden license. Today the license restricts hours of operation, requiring establishments to close patios at 11 p.m. on weekdays and 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturdays. Unlike sidewalk cafes, theres no limit on which seasons a patio can be open, though there are probably few Chicagoans willing to dine outdoors in January.

Hometown architects got the nod over a Portland firm to design Eugenes next City Hall.
Eugene City Manager Jon Ruiz has selected Rowell Brokaw Architects of Eugene as the lead architect on the City Hall project, over THA Architecture of Portland.
The city on Friday issued a notice of intent to award the work to Rowell Brokaw, which was competing with THA for the job.
Were excited about designing a building that fits Eugene and really has the support of the community, principal John Rowell said.
A new City Hall could cost $15 million, officials estimate. Of that, $11 million is estimated for construction and $4 million for design and other costs.
Ruiz said the selection was difficult as we reviewed proposals from two quality design teams.
But Ruiz said the opinions from residents that attended a presentation by the two firms in May helped him make the choice.
City Hall can be a hub of community pride and identity, and foster a strong sense of place, Ruiz said. The selection of Rowell Brokaw Architects is an important step in realizing a modest approach to a long-held community vision.
The final decision to hire Rowell Brokaw depends upon the city and the firm agreeing to contract terms, according to the award notice.
Public purchasing regulations allow THA to file a protest over the award until June 28.

ABILENE, Texas -
The Big Country has seen some nasty weather this week and the evidence is just about everywhere you look. Residents are working to clean up their yards and homes after high winds and rain knocked over trees and blew off roofs.
"I had several trees that had really gotten damaged and some of my shrubs were blown over," said Janice Middlebrooks.
Business has significantly picked up for companies that trim and haul away trees. Truck after truck lined up Thursday to drop tree limbs off at the Abilene Recycling Center.
"As great as it is to see an upswing in business you don't want damage to your trees like that," said Jeremy Voss, co-owner of God's Care Landscaping. He said many homeowners have wondered if their damaged trees will make it.
"Will the tree survive, will the tree die? Most anybody can come out there with a chainsaw and a trailer and load up your limbs and take it off but it's really good when you can call someone who knows about trees," said Voss.
ISA Certified Arborist and owner of Broken Willow Tree Removal Bruce Kreitler said the trees around the Big Country were already weak from past droughts, and 80 mile per hour straight line winds took a lot of them over the edge.
"When you're getting winds like that, trees are coming down," said Kreitler.
He said that does not mean that every tree that sustained damage has seen its last day.
"We've dealt with a lot of trees where we have removed the broken pieces from the canopy and I'm fairly comfortable saying that those trees will go on and in 10 to 15 years it would take someone who knows as much about trees as I do to even detect there was ever a problem," said Kreitler.
