While families and homeowners still sift through the rubble that remains weeks after the May 20 tornado in Moore, Okla., a group of volunteers are helping homeowners find a place to store their belongings.
Sheds of Hope is a project that provides a storage shed onsite for homeowners whose homes were severely damaged from the tornado, said Laura Atherton, recent OU graduate and onsite volunteer coordinator.
A new structure among the damage is not only refreshing but takes care of a pressing need for storage, Atherton said.
Storage is an immediate need, and we want to provide an immediate solution, said Atherton.
After graduating from OU in May, Atherton signed a six-month contract with the project to build up the hope of families who have lost everything by giving them a shed, she said.
Building the sheds has been an emotional project since day one, but the need from victims and the need for volunteers continues growing, Atherton said.
Every time I hear a homeowners story, it still shocks me, Atherton said. You never get used to it; every home you look at, you just imagine how it was before.
Among piles of rubble that once were homes full of family photos and shelves full of books, Atherton said she hopes these sheds will instill some hope for what is to come.

Scotland has announced new building regulations on carbon monoxide which will be put in place from 1 October 2013, reports HVP on June 18 in the article Scotland Declares New CO Regulations.
Scotlands new regulations require at least one carbon monoxide alarm to be installed in every space where a fixed combustion appliance is located, except appliances used only for cooking. If a flue passes through a room deemed as a high-risk accommodation such as bedrooms or living rooms, an alarm must also be installed.
It is estimated by the Department of Health that at least 4000 people are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning at A&E each year. However, as the gas is odourless and colourless, and the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to illnesses such as food poisoning and flu, the correct figure is considered to be significantly higher. The installation of a carbon monoxide alarm ensures that even low levels of carbon monoxide can be detected, alerting people to the presence of the poisonous gas.
Scotland and Irelands area specification manager for Sprue Safety Products, Brian Trueman told HVP that:
Carbon monoxide is a deadly but avoidable threat, and plumbers and installers can play a vital role in ensuring customers stay safe by alerting them to the risks and ensuring they have working alarms in the right locations.

TAMWORTH plumber Ben Ryan definitely wasnt chosen as a contestant in Dancing with the Tamworth Stars for his ability on the dance floor.
Ben and partner Lucinda Burt are one of 11 couples taking part in the fundraiser for the Cancer Council at Blazes at West Leagues on Saturday night.
Ben is more at home installing hot water systems than tripping the light fantastic, but his good mate, Wade OShea, put his name down as a contestant and Ben felt it was the least he could do to get involved in such a great cause.
Im not a dancer. Ive never done any formal training, but I think Im going alright, Ben said.
It was very hard learning the routine but now its just a matter of remembering those steps.
Sally (Keft-Gill) took a video of our practice session and she reckons I look like Im in the middle of nowhere, but I think Ill be alright.
Ive been practising at home and my wife and seven-month-old find it hilarious.
Ben said he doesnt have any aspirations of being in the winners circle on the night, but you never know stranger things have happened.
The self-employed plumber is relying fairly much on his dance partner, Lucinda Burt, to guide the way.
