MILFORD Troop 5 from Dingmans Ferry call themselves The Rainmakers because of a reoccurring pattern of wet weather on most or all of their outings. On one particular Saturday in May, the rainmakers set out to complete an Eagle Scout project with applicant Trevor Herman. The rain threatened the Scouts, but they were able to complete painting the porches of the Columns without incident.

Trevor Herman was the Scout in charge of the project, which included power washing and scraping, then painting all the porches and verandas at the Pike County Historical Societys home in Milford. The stately manse, which serves as the official historical society to Pike County and is a local history museum, gleamed in the daylight with fresh paint coating its rails, decks, and ceilings.

Scout Master Kevan Kelly and his Rainmakers have helped out the Columns before; last year they repaired and painted the Schocoppee Schoolhouse and undertook a spring cleaning project at the Museum.

Mr. Kelly and the Scouts have been very good to the Society, and I have enjoyed the time they have spent at The Columns over the years, said The Columns museum director, Lori Strelecki. I very much appreciate their love of history and dedication to their community.

When selecting a countertop for the kitchen, it seems there are countless choices available. Lets see what some of those choices are.

Technological advances have made just about any material possible for use as a countertop.

Perhaps that is why the choices seem overwhelming. Glass, concrete, stainless steel, wood, natural stone and man-made stone are some of the choices. Then there are all the colors available.

Glass tops are beautiful, and though they are not as fragile as you might expect, there is the care problem. The glass is tempered and can hold up to just about anything, but the edges and corners can be damaged if youre not careful.

Concrete tops come in any color you wish since the color is applied to the concrete rather than the concrete coming in a color of its own. It needs to be sealed to resist staining, but this countertop is very strong and long-lasting.

How about stainless steel? Theres a simplicity and sleekness about it. Though it wont stain, this material can certainly acquire dents over time. Stainless-steel countertops can come in many different designs and finishes.

They can be textured with different grains, patterns or surfaces that can hide these flaws. But stainless steel is not smudge-proof. Stainless has a reputation for showing fingerprints.

Wood is rich and beautiful in the kitchen, and many people opt for a wood or butcher-block top. Know, however, that it will discolor if installed around the sink.

A natural-oil finish is safe for direct knife work, but requires cleaning and oiling on a regular basis. So it is wise to cut on a cutting board and not directly on the wood countertop. Wood will burn and stain, but can be sanded to get the look of its natural beauty back.

Man-made stone is attractive and long-lasting and can withstand much abuse. And such tops come in a variety of colors.

"Designing Recovery" Competition To Have Real-World Impact on Families Struck by Three Recent Catastrophes

CHICAGO -- The American Institute of Architects (AIA) today announced a strategic partnership with Make It Right, St. Bernard Project and Architecture for Humanity to launch "Designing Recovery," an ideas competition created to aid in the rebuild of sustainable and resilient communities. The competition, which is designed to help survivors of three recent natural disasters, was announced as a Commitment to Action at CGI America, an annual event of the Clinton Global Initiative focused on finding solutions that promote economic recovery in the United States.

Dow Building Solutions, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, is sponsoring the award, providing building science expertise and products.

The "Designing Recovery" competition will take place in three distinct settings - New Orleans, LA; Joplin, MO; and New York, N.Y. - where the non-profit partner organizations are already working to recover from previous disasters. The partner organizations will assemble a portfolio, or pattern book, of entries of single-family housing designs with the objective of improving the quality, diversity and resiliency of the housing in each community. The portfolios will be made public after the close of the competition in October and the houses that utilize submitted designs will be placed on Architecture for Humanity's Open Architecture Network and Make It Right's Laboratory, an online forum for green builders.

The competition focuses on three communities, but organizers hope designs will also aid other communities recovering from recent natural disasters, including Moore, Oklahoma.

A total of $30,000 in prize money will be divided equally among three winning designs - one for each location. While the competition will award prizes to these winning designs, any design that meets these criteria will be saved in the portfolio to provide each community with additional housing options to aid in its long-term recovery. Our mission is to construct as many houses based on competition entries as possible.

Entries must be judged feasible to be built through the development models of Architecture for Humanity, Make It Right, and St. Bernard Project and must also incorporate the skills and input of a licensed architect. Organizers hope to be able to collect multiple designs that are suitable for use in each community's ongoing recovery efforts. For more details on how to enter, click here.

"Architects are uniquely qualified for this task, and we look forward to helping select entries that will establish a new standard for resilient, sustainable housing."
