    Architects to talk shop

    - June 21, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

THE Kuala Lumpur Architec-ture Festival (KLAF) is back again for the 11th year promising to break traditional and conventional thinking in the discipline.

At the launch, Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) president Chan Seong Aun said the festival features exhibitions, conferences, forums, a gala night and site visits to award-winning and prominent buildings.

Every year we try to get better speakers as the number of visitors increases. Last year, we had 31,000 people attending the festival and this year, we are targetting about 4,000 more, he said.

The festival is introducing the Professional Practice Forum (PPF) 2013 this year and the organisers are expecting every forum and conference to be filled to the brim.

PAM vice-president Abu Zarim Abu Bakar said the growing number of participants each year showed that Malaysia was becoming a hub for architecture.

Architecture festivals such as this allow Malaysian architects to see what is going on overseas, he said.

The festival is designed to attract architects, architecture students, manufacturers, developers, designers and others involved in the architecture industry.

Among the events for KLAF, which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre until June 23, are the PAM Annual International Architectural Design Conference which will feature projects by 10 speakers based on the theme Architechnique.

The festivals Kuala Lumpur Design Forum 2013 (KLDF), will feature three female design architects from different parts of Asia, who will be discussing ways to make defunct designs functional.

The highlight is the award-winning annual exhibition, Archidex 13 which will bring together architecture, interior design and building professionals to share and exchange views on new developments in the built environment.

It promises to be sustainable, durable - and more fire resistant than steel and concrete.

But it remains to be seen whether a pioneering 34-storey sky scraper made entirely of wood will woo over potential residents.

Architects hope to build the towering high-rise in Stockholm, Sweden, and claim that the skyscraper is 'cheaper, easier and more sustainable than typical steel and concrete constructions'.

Architectural firms C.F. Mller and Dinell Johansson and consultant Tyrns propose to build the world's tallest wooden skyscraper in Stockholm, Sweden

Head for heights: Wood is also a cheaper alternative to steel and concrete, because it costs less to transport

Planar Offers Continuing Education Class about Video Walls for Architects and Designers

    - June 21, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Today, Planar Systems, Inc. (PLNR), a global leader in digital display technology, in cooperation with the American Institute of Architects (AIA), announced it has launched a new continuing education credit class entitled Designing Media Walls: Imagery, Video and Information on Digital Canvases. Planar recently became an AIA Cornerstone Partner, and will offer the Continuing Education System (CES) class to AIAs nearly 80,000 members.

The free class, which was created for architects and interior designers, offers a primer on video wall technology. Specifically, participants will learn:

Planar video walls are installed worldwide in airports, museums, sports venues, hospitals, universities and retail showrooms. Planar tiled LCD technology is preferred for its off-board electronics design which reduces weight, heat, points of failure, and mounted depth, allowing for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Increasingly, architects and designers are incorporating technologically advanced designs into their corporate, healthcare, hospitality, retail and residential building projects, said Jennifer Davis, vice president of marketing at Planar Systems. Being an AIA Cornerstone Partner and offering AIA CES credit sessions is an important part of our commitment to the architectural industry and design community.

Participants taking Planars Designing Media Walls session will earn one learning unit of credit with health, safety and welfare (HSW). AIA architect members are required to complete 18 hours of continuing education per year for membership renewal, and CES credits help architects in many states meet their state licensing boards mandatory continuing education (MCE) requirements.

Planar initially will offer the class by appointment at architectural firms throughout the United States. Over time, the course will be made generally available through Planar reseller offices, AIA local chapter offices and as a webinar.

Designing Media Walls was an excellent introduction to the architectural potential of video displays, said Ernie Staley, architect with CH2M Hill & IDC Architects. The course gave me a solid foundation to begin incorporating media walls into our designs. Of the many AIA Continuing Education courses Ive attended, this was definitely one of the most useful and informative.

Planar provides one-of-a-kind video wall expertise based on over 30 years of digital display innovation. The company also offers a variety of desktop and touch screen monitors favored by architects and designers for their Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) work and large format displays for conference room presentations.

In March, Planar announced that 3D BIM models of select Planar large format LCD displays and video walls are available free through the Autodesk Seek web service, allowing architects, engineers and designers to easily download 3D models of Planar displays.

Phoenix Home Remodeling Company, Republic West Remodeling, Begins Kitchen Remodeling Project for Frank Lloyd Wright …

    - June 21, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., June 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Phoenix home remodeling company, Republic West Remodeling, announced a kitchen remodeling project for a Paradise Valley homeowner.

    (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130620/CG35469)

The unique home inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright architecture is perched on a high mountain. The angular design creates views triangular in shape, both inside and out. The home's style uses clean lines, contemporary elements, rich color texture and natural materials like stone blocks.

The goal of the project was to maintain the home's natural flow and integrity without compromising the design by any updates. Republic West Remodeling had to have a solid understanding of the home's style so they could select appropriate products. All work had to maintain consistency both inside and outside.

During the initial consultation meetings, the company was able to show the homeowners 3D renderings of proposed designs. For example, the kitchen cabinets were a rift cut oak wood with an espresso finish and slab style door. A specialty material, rift cut oak is a step above quarter saw oak. The grain, or "rift," is horizontal on the cabinets.

"The homeowner originally hired another contractor to do the remodeling project," said Jim Weisman, owner of Republic West Remodeling, a leading Phoenix home remodeling company. "However, the client liked our approach, quality of work and expertise so much that they stopped working with the first contractor and retained us for the entire project."

Interested homeowners can request a complimentary design consultation by calling 480-428-2695 or visiting the Republic West Remodeling website.

    About Republic West Remodeling

Republic West Remodeling is a leading specialist of home improvement in Phoenix, offers the highest quality home remodeling services including kitchens, bathrooms, room additions and outdoor living spaces.
