Walla Walla District Ranger Mike Rassbach says workers need to remove more than 350 hazardous trees from the 50-acre recreation area before it can safely open for the summer season.

Rassbach says the Forest Service is contracting to have the hazardous trees and associated slash removed, with the project scheduled to begin the week of June 17th. He says he hopes it will be completed in time for the 4th of July, but anyone planning to visit in early July should have an alternative plan in mind, and should call to confirm the campground opening date.

"Several other campgrounds in the area will be open and operating for the holiday weekend including Target Meadows, Woodward and Woodland campgrounds," Rassbach said.

He says the hazardous trees in and around Jubilee Lake Campground are predominantly old age sub-alpine firs that have become susceptible to insects, disease, soil compaction and vandalism in their old age.

Many of the trees that once towered over Collingwood Boulevard in the Old West End and Cherrylawn Drive in South Toledo are gone, but that hasn't ended protests from residents irate over city policy they say causes unnecessary tree removal.

Former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, who several years ago fought plans to clear trees along his street for a reconstruction project, joined a dozen property owners Monday who urged the Bell administration to find creative ways to save trees.

Lets make every effort, as was done on Townley [Road] and Burroughs [Drive], to save those trees, Mr. Finkbeiner said before council's utilities and public service committee.

Earlier this year, the city removed six dozen trees along Collingwood between Ashland Avenue and Monroe Street despite objections from residents and in opposition to a recommendation issued by the federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. The advisory panel said the trees' removal would water down the neighborhoods historic flavor for several decades until replacement trees can mature.

David Neuendorff, a Scottwood Avenue resident, told council that property values have dropped because of the tree removal.

"The city has ignored the residents, Mr. Neuendorff said.

City officials said the trees had to go because the project, which includes replacing a 140-year-old water main and rebuilding the street, would damage their roots sufficiently to kill them anyway. Mr. Neuendorff and other critics said rebuilding the street to its current width is unnecessary, and narrowing Collingwood could have saved the trees.

Cherrylawn Drive resident Bill Coine told council he was sickened by the removal of about 120 trees from his street, also eroding neighborhood character. City officials said the trees needed to be cut down to make way for new sidewalks or would otherwise be damaged by the street work.

Sprinkler system saves Toms River storage complex from fire damage, officials say

TOMS RIVER A fire at the Smart Stop storage building complex on Route 37 in the township was kept under control Monday night when the business sprinkler system functioned properly, averting what could have been a much more dangerous incident, fire officials said.

East Dover Fire Company crews responded to a fire call at 7:30 p.m. and arrived to a smoke condition on the first floor of the West building, according to a statement by the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention. An activated fire sprinkler head was found to be operating and the crews discovered an extinguished fire in a large plastic commercial garbage can.

The crews, led by Chief Richard Tutela, secured the control valve to the sprinkler system, removed the garbage can and contents from the building, and conducted salvage and overhaul operations.

One 155-degree sprinkler head suppressed the fire without it spreading to other parts of the building, according to fire officials. Officials said, because the system functioned the way it was designed to, the business will be allowed to remain open, with only minor cleanup needed.

Inspector Kieran Flynn of the TR Bureau of Fire Prevention conducted the investigation. Flynn determined the fire was accidental, saying that discarded smoking material in the plastic garbage can was the cause of the fire.

There were no injuries reported.
