You spend time and money to create a nice home. How can you protect it from intruders without it costing a fortune? It's easier than you think.

Chris Hsiung, a lieutenant with the Mountain View Police Department in California, says that the best home security involves multiple deterrents to dissuade opportunists and thieves from making your home a target.

Contrary to what you see on TV, Hsiung says most homes are burglarized during the day when residents are out. "Burglars do not want to confront anybody. At the first sign of occupancy, they're gone," he says. "They just want to grab property and sell it. The criminals know that when someone is in the house, it changes the crime classification."

Because of this, thieves frequently pose as solicitors, he says. If no one answers the door, that's their cue to head around back and break in. Outsmart a thief with these home security tactics for less.

The 'Duh' Factor

Using common sense is one of the best ways to prevent a home intrusion, Hsiung says. "You'd be surprised how many people leave doors and windows open when they leave."

Even an open garage door invites a quick theft of whatever you store in there. If a thief sees a bike in an open garage, it's an easy mobile crime to commit. "They come in by foot and take off on the bike," Hsiung says.

Because some burglars case an area for a target, be discreet before leaving town on a trip, which could alert thieves you'll be away. "If you're heading to the airport, you don't want to advertise it with your car trunk open, filled with suitcases," Hsiung says. Instead, gather your suitcases indoors, and put them in the car all at once, closing the trunk as soon as you've loaded it.

To keep prowlers away when you're out of town, make the home look like it's still occupied, says Hsiung. Make sure to cancel newspapers, and have the post office hold your mail, so it doesn't stack up in front of your home. Also, try plugging in timers to light your house while you're away. Hsiung says programmable timers are available that can be set to come on randomly or at different times. If burglars have the patience to stake out a house and analyze patterns, this can throw them off.

You can use these guidelines when doing something as simple as selecting a comforter color so it has exactly the kind of feng shui wealth you seek.

When it comes to key influences in our lives, few are important as the bedroom in feng shui, and in particular, sleep. The time we spend sleeping is so central and important to our lives that the colors we surround ourselves with have a profound influence over us. By selecting a comforter color based on its specific inspiration, we'll have more impact on this particular area of our lives.

Color of money

In feng shui, the color green is related to business opportunity and earned income. Often green is preferred over the second income color of blue, but these two shades represent different aspects of wealth: generating and accumulated money.

Starting with pale blue and ranging all the way to black, these colors represent generating income and business opportunities. If this is what you'd like more of in your life, blues or black comforter colors are the best for your bedroom.

When your finances are on the slim side, colors that represent accumulated wealth are what you want. Those hues range from mint to deep forest green, with a medium green shade as the prime color of amassed money. THE four-way overhead pedestrian bridge at Komtar in Penang has been described by regular users as ugly, not user-friendly for old folk and the disabled, and causing bad feng shui to the nearby shops.

A CCTV camera on the bridge has also captured footage of couples engaged in sexual acts in the quiet hours of the night.

State secretariat chief engineer Lim Thean Heng said CCTV footage also showed that there had been regular cases of mugging there.

He added that the CCTV transmitted live feeds to the nearby police station for police action and the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP).

Lim said the state government was studying various alternatives to replace the bridge or to improve it for public safety.

Replacing it with an underground crossing is desirable but it will be expensive. It will also need 24-hour lighting and ventilation, and we must prevent it from flooding when it rains, he said.

In an interview with several nearby residents and traders by StarMetro North, Phuah Tean Sum, 67, claimed that nobody in his neighbourhood had liked the bridge ever since it was built in 1993.

I hate this bridge, even though I use it six or seven times a day, said Phuah, who described the bridge as an ugly structure that marred the streetscape.

My friends shops closest to the bridge suffered a drop in business because the bridge blocks their shops facade.

Its very bad feng shui for Komtar, he added.

Contrary to popular belief, the best way to get from Point A to Point B is not, in fact, a straight line.

The best way is to shorten the distance between the two points whenever possible. Which it is in this case, where Point A is home plate and Point B is the outfield seats.

In other words, move the fences in.
