WATERVLIET, N.Y. -- Progress is finally being made in the demolition of St. Patrick's bell tower after days of delays.
The 150-year-old tower had proven tough to tear down, but Thursday, a heavy crane is doing the work that cables couldn't do. The crane tore off chunks of the brick tower, one load at a time. Progress is slow, but, right now, almost the entire top portion of the tower is gone. Onlookers gathered at the site all day, still in disbelief.
"I think it's awful. I do think it could've stood for a lot longer. I that there's a good reason for it because it is about 160-years-old or something and there's not very many buildings in the world built like that, said Watervliet resident Ryan Hanley.
Steven Powers of Nigro Companies tells the NEWS CENTER the demolition crew will return Friday at 7 a.m. to continue the teardown. He says it will likely take them through the better part of next week to demolish the entire tower.

An effort by city lawmakers to at least temporarily hold off on demolition of the Trico complex, a nationally designated historic structure, isnt enough, preservationists said Wednesday.
The Common Council unanimously agreed this week to impose a moratorium on issuing demolition permits for the former windshield wiper factory until Jan. 1. Two weeks ago, the Council rejected an effort to designate the complex as a local landmark.
It doesnt mean much, said city Preservation Board member Tim Tielman. It is window dressing. It would have been much better to get it designated a local landmark.
The Preservation Board had appealed to the Council to designate the Trico complex a local landmark, which would have given the board greater oversight over plans to demolish or re-use the building.
The measure, the second of its kind to come before the Council, failed in a 4-4 vote.
Though Ellicott Council Member Darius G. Pridgen voted against the designation, he sponsored the demolition moratorium and said that if plans to redevelop the complex get under way before the end of the year, he would be open to extending it.
If there is a developer that can be found for Trico, that can do what some folks claim can be done, there is time to do it, Pridgen said.
Principals with the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, which has development rights to the sprawling complex at Washington and Goodell streets, were opposed to the landmark status for Trico, but said they would work with Preservation Buffalo Niagara over the next six months to find a reuse for the building.
Hopefully we can build upon the leads they might have had before and help make that happen, Matthew K. Enstice, president and CEO of the Medical Campus, said Wednesday.
The moratorium lengthens that period to seven months and formalizes it beyond a handshake agreement, Pridgen said.

FULTON, N.Y. -- For a century, this building was a staple of the Fulton community. It was one of Nestle's many chocolate manufacturing plants.
"We had the roasters at building 58 and you could smell chocolate in the air," said Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr.
In its prime, 1,500 people worked at the factory in Fulton.
"It was huge. You can't talk to a family here that some of them didn't work there. Whole generations worked there. My family worked there. I was the last man out of there. My brothers worked there. My father worked there. My mother worked there," said Woodward.
When it closed a decade ago, about 450 people lost their jobs.
"From a financial impact, it was bad for morale number one. But they provided $22 million a year in payroll. People were paying mortgages, debts, groceries and gasoline," said Woodward.
Now that icon in the community is being torn down to make way for new development.

Nestle plant demolition to clear space for new development

EAST LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Demolition of a 113-year-old building on Michigan State Universitys campus is on hold after a fire burned through its roof.
The fire was reported Wednesday evening at Morrill Hall on the north end of campus. It took crews about two hours to extinguish the fire. No one was injured and the building was empty at the time.
East Lansing Deputy Fire Chief Troy Brya saidthe fire appears to have started in debris on the roof, part of which collapsed.
Demolition work started on the buildingin March and was expected to be completed in August. Its unclear how long of a delay the fire will cause to construction dates.
Nicknamed The Coop, Morrill Hall once was a dormitory for female students and also housed home economics classrooms. In the 1930s, it was converted to classroom space and named for Justin S. Morrill, a former U.S. senator who pushed to establish land grant universities.
In 2010, the schools Board of Trustees approved a plan to take down the building and move the departments housed there into a Wells Hall addition and a renovated Old Horticulture Building. Demolition and walkway construction will cost about $1 million, MSU said.

LEAD A city-owned retaining wall behind Bobs Silver Star Lounge in Lead collapsed Friday night, but city crews plan to have it fixed this week.
Lead City Administrator Mike Stahl reported that a 20 to 30 year-old wooden bulkhead in the area rotted out and snapped right above Bobs Silver Star Lounge, and near Railroad Avenue. City street crews are working on cleaning the area up, and Stahl said he thinks they will be able to slope the area back and change the turn-around area on Railroad Avenue to fix the problem.
It was pretty rotten, Stahl said of the bulkhead. It doesnt look like that retaining wall is needed anymore. We cleaned the area up and got it cordoned off so there is no chance of an accident.
Though Stahl said fixing the issue would cost the city a little extra money, he did not have estimates as of Tuesday.
Lead Mayor Jerry Apa, who owns the property adjacent to the bulkhead, said Theyre doing everything possible to make it safe for people to go up there.
