KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The old PSC Metals recycling building on Richards Street came tumbling down Saturday morning. Company workers said the building was operational until about four years ago. More recently, the homeless have camped in and around it.

"I grew up in this neighborhood and I was just curious to see what all the noise was about. I'm glad to see they're cleaning it up - maybe it will make it a safer place for the neighborhood," said a man who lives nearby.

Last month, Knoxville police charged Hope Warvi, Joshua Cool and Brandon Roberts with killing Collin Colbert, Ryan Gorney and Grace Standridge. All six lived in the homless camp. PSC workers said the city asked them to board up the building or tear it down, and they decided to demolish it to keep the community safe.

Knoxville police searched the building multiple times with canines and found a few homeless people still inside Saturday morning. They allowed them to get their belongings before demolition started.

The homeless community has mixed reactions about the building coming down:

"Hopefully there won't be any more murders - no more unsafe living habitat for the homeless," said Gaylene Goins, who is homeless.

"Homeless people need somewhere to live, you hear me?" said MIchael Best, who lives on the streets.

"Everybody gets out of home every day. But we always stand up on our feet because when one door closes, another one opens and you'll find somewhere to go," said Mandie Riley, who is also homeless.

PSC said it will take about two more weeks before the building is all the way down and everything is cleaned up.

Homeless camp demolition starts earlier than expected

WATERVLIET, N.Y. The demolition of the 137-foot bell tower of the historic St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet will continue next week after two snapped cables delayed crews on Thursday and Friday.

Demolition has been well underway for several weeks at St. Patrick's Church. On Thursday, a large crane was expected to secure and begin removing the last remaining piece, now it is expected to happen Monday.

For the demolition, crews had to attach cables to the side of the building to use force from the side to knock it down, but ran into problems when a cable broke on Thursday and again on Friday.

The company conducting the demolition, Nigro Companies has released the following statement:

"Work to dismantle the bell tower of the former St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet will resume next week. Preparatory work will continue this weekend but, consistent with Watervliet city policy, no demolition will occur on the weekend. Our main concern has been, and remains, to do this work safely and with as little impact as possible to the surrounding community. This is why the pace of the work has been deliberate and step-wise and why we have used exclusively mechanical means to carry it out. We will continue to coordinate our work closely with Watervliet city officials. We appreciate the community's patience."

Dozens have come to Watervliet to see the final demolition of Saint Patrick's Church.

"I'm astonished at how they are going to do all this, it's fascinating how engineers come up with all this," said Jerard Davignon.

"I'm trying not to cry, it breaks my heart to see this church go," said Sharon Wemple, born a raised in Watervliet. "They're having problems, apparently the cable has broken, I don't know if that is divine intervention or a poor cable, but I think its closure. People want closure."

The iconic bell tower is all that remains of the 170-year-old church. A Price Chopper supermarket and two smaller commercial buildings are slated to be built by developers on the site where the landmark church once stood.

There have been several lawsuits and opposition from within the community regarding the plan; many residents have personal connections to the church and didn't want to see it torn down.

SARANAC LAKE - More than two years after the surging floodwaters of the Saranac River undermined a retaining wall behind the Harrietstown Town Hall, the town is still struggling to get all the necessary permits to replace it.

At a board meeting Thursday night, town officials said they'd been saddled with yet another permitting requirement, this one from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

"We've already spent $37,019.52 on permits, and we don't have a stone in the water yet," said town Supervisor Bob Bevilacqua. "And now the state is looking for a hydraulic study. It seems frivolous to ask us to do this extensive study when we've already spent 2 percent of our budget on permits."

"Are they saying that if we don't do the hydraulic study we're not going to get the permit?" asked Councilwoman Nichole Meyette.

"In so many words, yes," said town Code Enforcement Officer Ed Randig.

Town officials said they're planning to meet with DEC Region 5 Director Robert Stegemann to discuss the need for the study. Councilman Jim Murnane suggested they also reach out to the town's state representatives.

"It seems like it's an undue burden on the town and the taxpayers of Harrietstown to have to go through this," Bevilacqua said.

The river, fueled by a combination of heavy rains and snowmelt, climbed over its banks in late April 2011 and eroded portions of the existing stone and concrete retaining wall. The town plans to replace it with a 118-foot retaining wall made of stone riprap and segmented blocks.

Randig said after the meeting the $37,019 spent so far has been for engineering costs related to the project. He said the town has secured permits from the Army Corps of Engineers, the state Adirondack Park Agency, the state Department of Transportation and a separate permit from DEC's Region 5 office in Ray Brook.

Randig said he wasn't sure what the hydraulic study could cost. He said he didn't know it was going to be required until he received a phone call from DEC's Warrensburg office on Wednesday.

Permit needs stall H'town retaining wall project

GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Aretaining wall has shifted behind two Gastonia businesses forcing the stores to close until engineers and inspectors can fix the problem.

The Sprint store and AAA Car Care Center in the 2500 block of E. Franklin Boulevardremained closed Friday evening.

Sprint customers were directed to go to another area location.

A sign on the doors of the businesses say the building is condemned until further notice.

Several drivers showed up at the car care center to find it closed and had no clue why until told by WBTV.

"I was quite surprised..it looked empty and I thought today is not a holiday. All I want is an oil change but...parked my vehicle and got to the door and saw condemned..wow," Barbara Malone said.

It's unclear if the recent rains had anything to do with the shift or how long the wall had been damaged.

Signs in the parking lot below the buildings say the area is prone to flooding.

Tribek Properties did not respond to repeated requests for information about how long it might take to fix the problem.
