Abingtons extensive efforts to address the future school building needs of Abington continues to progress each month.

The school building committee is coordinating its efforts with the states school building authority to ensure that Abington, like other surrounding towns, will reap the benefits of the states agreement to pay for more than 50 percent of Abingtons eventual school construction project.

The towns school building committee is pleased to announce that it has retained the services of Ai3 Architects LLC of Wayland, as the architect for the MSBA-required school feasibility study.

After reviewing all of the resumes and applications submitted by architectural design firms, MSBAs 15-member designer selection panel, along with three Abington School Building Committee representatives, interviewed three finalist firms in Boston on Jan. 22, 2013.

In compliance with MSBA guidelines, the town approved the selection of the Ai3 company to conduct a school feasibility study.

After executing the required contract, Ai3 began its initial investigations and inspections of Abington schools in February 2013.

Ai3 is the only firm in this region that focuses the entire practice on PK-12 educational design, as the firm has previously completed school projects for the nearby communities of Whitman, Hanson and Brockton.

Ai3 has extensive experience in completing comprehensive feasibility studies for middle schools and high schools that identify community concerns, including but not limited to possible grade re-configurations, new busing routes, potential new sites, re-use or expansion of existing school sites, comparison of new construction versus addition/renovation options, investment in technology, energy-efficient and Green buildings, project cost estimates and taxpayer impacts.

At the conclusion of the feasibility study, Ai3 and the Abington school building committee will present the town residents with preliminary building designs, suggested grade level configurations, and proposed site layouts for review and comment by the town and the MSBA.

The cost of the feasibility study was approved by Abington voters in April 2012, which qualified and entitled the town to receive MSBA funding to pay for approximately 54 percent of the studys cost.

About 25 workers from the R.W. Mulligan Company of Riverhead began work on the Center Firehouse roof this morning.

The roof had developed leaks that could be seen on the ceiling in the main meeting room on the buildings second floor.

Commissioners chose Mulligan from among five companies that had priced the project for Commissioner Keith Clark. Because the roof replacement was deemed an emergency repair, commissioners didnt have to put the project out to bid. But they requested that Mr. Clark get a sense of what the job would cost by speaking with various roofers.

Mulligan came in at a low price of $29,400. Others who priced the project were Cotrone at $32,200; Eli Construction at $35,625; Hunter at $46,500; and AAC Inc. at $51,500.

Mr. Clark described Mulligan as a very reputable company with huge crews able to tackle the project rapidly.

Center firehouse roofing under way

A LUCRATIVE window cleaning contract for Kirklees Council is up for grabs.

Window cleaners across Kirklees are being encouraged to bid for a minimum two-year contract with the council.

The current contract is held by In Depth Management Services and Mitie Facilities Management.

The new contract will run from October 1 and will include a range of council buildings including schools, libraries, offices, and community centres. Exact costs have not been disclosed but it will run to many tens of thousands.

The contract is divided into four geographical areas: North West Kirklees (Batley, Cleckheaton and Gomersal), North East Kirklees (Mirfield and Dewsbury), South East Kirklees (Huddersfield and the Valleys) and South West Kirklees (Kirkheaton, Denby Dale and Clayton West).

In addition, there will be a further non-geographic contract opportunity covering the more complex buildings across the councils stock including town halls, markets, medium-rise offices and housing. Companies will be able to tender for all five areas or select them individually.

Company executives are invited to attend a drop-in session on Friday, April 26 at Kirkgate Buildings, Byram Street, Huddersfield between 9am and 1pm.

Technical officers will be on hand to provide information on the requirements of the contract/s, the tendering process, the councils health and safety requirements, as well as invoicing and payment procedures.

Clr David Sheard said: The contract had been split into smaller sections, rather than a large, all-encompassing contract to provide greater flexibility, as well as opening up opportunities for smaller suppliers who may want to consider tendering for their local area or areas.

Oak, Locust, and Ash trees are two species in the Northern Virginia area that their leaves are some of the last to come out. Many other tree species canopies such as Maple, Poplar, and Dogwood trees will likely have already bloomed before Oak, Locust, or Ash trees. Naturally this is usually the case, however each tree is different based on where it is located. It is a possibility that if a tree is in decline, it could take longer to bloom than a healthy tree of the same species. Maple, Poplar, Redbud, Dogwood, and many other tree species native to the Fairfax Virginia area bloom the earliest. The warm weather causes flowers and leaves to bloom, so depending on how early or late in the season it heats up determines when the blooming will occur. Our famous Cherry trees in Washington DC are generally a good guide for when things buds start popping.

Spring is such a beautiful season that represents growth and life. It is such an amazing scene to view all the flowering trees and shrubs in full bloom. The sad part is when you look around your yard, and see that one tree or shrub has not made it, and it stands out like a sore thumb. A large brown spot in the yard is never a pretty scene. Especially when its a large old White Oak that has died from construction damage. Most of the time, a tree dies from issues in the root system. The problem is usually underground. Too much cutting in the CRZ (critical root zone) of a tree often leads to negative consequences. Sometimes it can take a long time for a tree to die, while others it can happen very quickly. Trees such as Maples are very hardy, and can live through many inadequacies. On the other hand, trees such as some species of Oak do not have the same tolerance to unfavorable conditions. For example, Red Oaks in our area have a common problem with root rot caused by droughts or dry spells. Fungus will grow from the ends of the root system back to the trunk. Many times, compacted soil does not allow oxygen to the root system, and other cases construction damage to roots cause a tree to decline or die.

Tree removal is a necessary option many times if a tree has experienced these kinds of issues and is dead or in decline. Hazardous trees should be taken down immediately so they don't cause further damage to people or structures. It is common that trees fall onto houses. Thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, high winds all can blow trees over, specially when trees have a full canopy after rainfall. Trees can topple over, especially ones with root or fungus issues. It is easy to discover if a tree needs to be looked at by a professional arborist. Any signs of issues with the leaves, bark, present decay, trees with a heavy lean towards a structure, dead limbs, etc are all occasions when a home owner should call in for a professional opinion.

Recent heavy snows have gotten us off the hook for watering our lawns for awhile. Still, the growing season and watering restrictions are just around the corner. With the weekend warm-up, this is a good time to get to know your sprinkler system better than ever. When you can only water twice a week, you need to make it count.

Here are some tips:

You probably won't need to water until well into May, depending on the amount of precipitation in your area and the weather. Check plants that get a lot of sun and don't water until the soil starts to dry out.

Don't water just because you can. Spring is when the grass roots need to be trained to grow deep in search of water over-watering only makes the roots lazy and less drought-hardy.

Finally, know what kinds of sprinkler heads you have on your system and set the timer to water accordingly.

In one minute of time, different kinds of sprinklers will put out different amounts of water. If you don't know the difference between one that quickly puts down 2-3 gallons a minute and the one that only emits a half gallon, you will over water and waste water. Or, you will under-water and stress your plants.

Know the difference between these three basic types of sprinklers and then set the timer accordingly.

Spray heads spray the most water in one area in the shortest time. They spray one area continuously (they don't turn). In one minute, they emit 2-3 gallons of water and all sprays in the same place. Running them too long will mean more water than the soil will drink in and you'll have water running down the street.

Rotor heads oscillate back and forth. Because they're constantly moving across the lawn, it takes more time to water the lawn thoroughly. This is why you need to set the timer to run the areas with rotor heads longer.

Drip emitters not for lawns but the most efficient way to water veggies, flowers, shrubs and trees. They emit water very slowly, but very efficiently because no water is lost in the wind and there's little evaporation. Areas watered with drip need a much longer operating time.
