Architects have developed preliminary design ideas for a renovation of the Boulder Main Public Library, and they'll present them to the public at a meeting Thursday night.

This will be a "check-in" after a previous set of meetings in February for architects from Studiotrope Design Collective to learn about how people use the library and what improvements they would like to see.

Those ideas were incorporated into the plans for the renovation, which includes a redesign and remodel of the children's and teen areas and changes to the media area, the circulation desk and the adult literacy classrooms. The renovation will also enhance the library's fiction, music and movies collection area.

In addition, the library is considering adding a cafe.

Most of the money for the $2.45 million project comes from $49 million in bonds approved by Boulder voters in November 2011.

An additional $690,000 in infrastructure funding will be put toward replacing outdated electrical and data distribution systems, repairing or replacing windows, accessibility improvements, new carpeting and the possible cafe.

Thursday's meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Canyon Theater at the Main Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Ave., with a short presentation. There will then be four break-out groups focused on different areas, including children's services, teen services, learning spaces and the cafe. Participants can rotate among the groups to give feedback on the areas that interest them.

Library spokeswoman Jennifer Bray said library officials hope people who attended the first meetings will come back to let architects know how well the preliminary designs reflect their wishes.

There will be two more public meetings before the new designs are finalized.

On May 6, there will be a meeting for parents of young children during the 10:15 a.m. storytime and a meeting for young teenagers at 4 p.m.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are both one-of-a-kind athletes born in the same generation, and from the moment they've risen to prominence, we've done nothing but compare them.

Now that Town Hall has been named to the U.S. Register of Historic Places, town officials generally agree that future repairs and upgrades can be legally financed via the Community Preservation Acts historic resources account.

The 1914 building next to Bournes Pond needs more roof repair atop the main part of the redbrick structure. Two years ago, the roof above the selectmens office was re-done.

The latest project will cost an estimated $15,840. This is a repair and preserve effort, Town Administrator Thomas Guerino advised the finance committee.

More work is not yet scheduled, he said, but it is needed and will be scheduled once a full report about Town Hall inadequacies is issued by Facilities Director Jonathan Nelson.

At this point, Gueirno said the building needs new gutters and downspouts, vinyl-siding repair in places, an electrical upgrade and parts replacement, repairs to the front steps and those leading to the selectmens office on the north side of the structure and an evaluation of the handicapped access ramp.

Guerino said additional more window work is also needed on the north side.

Five years ago, Town Meeting voters routinely approved a boiler-replacement request that many thought should have been recommended through the annual capital outlay requests, not the CPA. But now Town Hall has been duly listed as an historic place, and CPA requests would seem to be green-lighted in advance.

For now we have to try to keep the water out and inspect what is not thought to be extensive damage from leaks, Guerino said.

Town officials and the Canal Chamber of Commerce are intent on sprucing up Buzzards Bay properties in time for the canal centennial observances in 2014. Any Town Hall work in this regard would likely be concluded in time for those events. A full assessment of building needs, however, is due next year.

The project of roof replacement and repairs is now moving forward as the Centennial School Board approved two bid awards at the last board meeting April 9.

Jottan Inc. of Florence, N.J., will take on the replacement of Warminsters Log College Middle School roof as the company came in as the lowest bitter of 10 roofing companies. The project of the roof replacement will cost the district $1.4 million.

US Roofing of Norristown came in as the lowest bidder for the roof repair project at Klinger Elementary School in Southampton at $58,800. The district received five bids for the project with bids as high as $110,000.

According to school officials, the repairs at Klinger Middle School will not complete the schools roofing improvement and the district will have to eventually replace the roof within the next couple of years.

During the meeting the school board also approved June 20 as the last day of school this year. June 20 also marks graduation day for seniors at William Tennent High School.

Centennial School Board OKs roof renovations

GRASS LAKE, MI Grass Lake Middle School will receive a new roof this summer.

The school board on Monday approved a bid from McDonald Roofing that will replace a portion of the middle school roof. The $39,000 project is the third phase of a five-year roof replacement schedule the district created two years ago.

We want to make sure we keep up on the roofs so we dont have to incur debt in the future, Superintendent Brad Hamilton said.

The district created the five-year roof replacement plan in order to prevent major roof repairs. The plan includes replacing most of the roofing at Grass Lake Middle School and George Long Elementary.

According to school officials, funds for the new roof at the middle school are expected to come from the districts capital budget, not the general fund.

In other business, the district is increasing its driver education fee from $250 to $300. The current fee covers the cost of the instructors, but doesnt provide funds for vehicle replacement. The increased fee will allow the district to replace vehicles as needed.

Grass Lake School board approves new roof for middle school

BATON ROUGE - Today, Governor Bobby Jindal announced the capital construction proposal for the next fiscal year (FY 2014), which includes millions in funding for projects in North Louisiana. The proposal was submitted Monday to the Legislature in the form of House Bill 2 and includes several investments in higher education projects. Since 2008, the Jindal administration has supported more than $700 million dollars in critical higher education infrastructure investments across the state, including more than $225 million for Louisiana Community and Technical College campuses.

Key projects include $8.05 million for Sandel Hall renovations at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, $3.5 million for a new classroom building at Southern University, Shreveport, $20 million for construction and utilities for I-49 from I-220 in the City of Shreveport to the Arkansas state line in Caddo Parish, and $14 million for replacement of Shreveport's North Louisiana Criminalistics Lab in Caddo Parish.

Governor Jindal said, "North Louisiana is already one of the best places in the country to live, to work, to study and to raise a family. By investing more dollars at our higher education institutions and in our roads, we can enhance the learning environment for students and make transportation this community relies on safer and more accessible.
