    Asbestos fears at refinery demolition

    - April 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

There has been another health scare for workers at the Port Stanvac refinery demolition site.

7News understands an excavator unearthed a large amount of asbestos last Saturday week.

It is believed as many as 12 workers were in the immediate area at the time.

An exclusion zone has been established, but there are fears exposed contractors werent properly decontaminated.

It is understood tests on their clothes later revealed traces of the potentially deadly substance.

It is not unusual for asbestos to be found on site there is apparently lots of it just below the grounds surface.

But some workers are worried about what they call a lack of procedure to protect them from it.

The construction workers union is also concerned the demolition contractor isnt keeping staff in the loop.

Workers only recently returned to the site after being sent home for about three weeks when traces of potentially lethal legionella were found in drinking water.

Mobil says every step is being taken to ensure the safety of its staff.

Houseworks: Nothing, especially a wood retaining wall, lasts forever

    - April 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Nothing lasts forever.

At least nothing made of wood lasts forever if you leave it outside.

Thats why I have to cart home or have dumped in my driveway a load of wood chips every spring.

That I hate mowing should be well-known by now. Ive certainly written about it enough in the past 25 years.

Because of that, large areas of my yards always have been covered by wood chip mulch. It never needs watering, seldom needs weeding and never, ever needs mowing.

But to keep it thick enough for all that it does need renewing.

This year, that meant my neighbor and I (we split it 50-50) spending two days shoveling and hauling one little garden cart at a time to our various beds a 5-cubic-yard pile that had been dumped in my drive.

(We got finished just ahead of a late spring snowstorm, which brought with it two more days on the ends of shovels. Sigh.)

Such is the price you pay because wood chips left outside do not last forever.

Nor do retaining walls made from wooden pilings.

Edmonton eases rules on outdoor patios

    - April 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Edmonton restaurants and bars should find it easier and cheaper to open outdoor patios this year.

"We have such a short summer we might as well get out there and enjoy it," said Coun. Kerry Diotte, who questioned why city hall took so long.

"I am concerned somewhat in the fact Don (Iveson) and Ben (Henderson) and I asked for this almost a year ago."

The smaller sidewalk cafes which don't serve alcohol should win approval immediately.

Larger patios that will be serving alcohol will still have to wait four to six weeks to get the go ahead.

Rules will be in place to help the city keep an eye on the patio furniture set out by bars and restaurants.

"Its to stop someone throwing junk furniture out there that doesn't match ... that we're not just taking an old sofa and throwing it out there and calling it furniture," said Coun. Ben Henderson.

Larger patios will now pay $100 per year, while smaller patios will pay $25. Also for the first time businesses can keep a patio open year round if they so wish.

"The purpose was to get some outdoor activity," said Coun. Kim Krushell. "We think we achieved that."

Team still evaluating architects for City Hall

    - April 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Eugene architect Otto Poticha didnt make the list of finalists to design the next City Hall, but he hopes another local architect gets the job.

That remains uncertain, as THA Architects, one of three architecture firms in the running for the high-profile job, is from Portland.

Poticha said it would be a mistake for municipal government to hire an out-of-town firm as the lead architect to design the Eugene City Hall.

There is something about designing your own house in your own community instead of designing a house for somebody else in another place, said Poticha, who had teamed with TBG Architects + Planners of Eugene in an unsuccessful effort to get the City Hall design work.

A team of city officials is deciding whether to hire THA or one of the two Eugene-based finalists, Rowell Brokaw Architects or Robertson Sherwood Architects, for the job.

The teams deliberations could lead to an announcement possibly later this week to hire one of the firms, or for the city to undergo another round of evaluations of some or all of the finalists, said Heather Nelson, city purchasing analyst.

We have three really great proposals and three great teams to choose from, she said. This is a really big project, and we want to make sure that we select the best team to suit our needs.

City officials originally had planned to announce the top selection last Friday, though they reserved the right to take more time if necessary.

Nelson, who declined to say how the three finalists are ranked, said she didnt think the delay was related to whether the city might choose an out-of-area firm.

I dont think that is a primary concern at this point, she said. But I cant say exactly what is being discussed right now.
