Vulcan Termite and Pest Control comes to the rescue. The company will be on-hand at the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders as it presents the third annual Building & Remodeling Expo, April 5-7, 2013, at the Pelham Civic Complex.

Vulcan Termite and Pest Control, Inc. will be in booths 9 and 10 and will have a live radio remote on Saturday the 6th with Mr. Jim Butters. Butters co-hosts a Saturday morning show called "Your House Inside and Out" every Saturday from 10:00am - 12:00pm CST on 101.1 FM, The Source.

"The booths will be staffed with professionals and experts in all areas of pest control," says Vulcan manager Fred Smith. "Customers have reported that as they begin doing both internal and external demo work on the house there are lots of surprises."

Smith continues, "The worst case scenario is when giving the kitchen a facelift, a client comes across some termite tubes. Others discover rat droppings. Vulcan Termite and Pest Control's booth can help detect the warning signs of an infestation."

He warns, "Many folks don't realize what's going on between the walls. Or they see one mouse, set a trap, catch the critter and think that's the end of the game. Not quite."

"Realize this: These vermin can give birth to up-to 60 babies a year, failure to nip this problem quickly will lead to an overwhelming population of the house mouse. The mouse only lives for about a year, but their rate of replacement replenishes the colony exponentially," Smith explains.

Smith invites homeowners who are considering an indoor or outdoor project to visit booths 9 and 10 at the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders. It's all happening at the Pelham Civic Complex, 500 Amphitheater Rd in Pelham. Vulcan Termite and Pest Control will be there Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.; Saturday: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Sunday: 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Optimism, passion, and perseverance: these are the tools used by young interior designers to succeed in their field.

The interior design industry is ever-evolving, with up-and-coming young designers creating fresh and vibrant ideas and finding new ways to get their names out there through social networking sites like Pinterest, Tumblr, and Instagram.

For Rossy Yabut-Rojales, 28, her store, Heima, has even been called "Pinterest Land," with all their pieces designed to "make people happy."

"It's a feel-good store, everything's photogenic," she said.

Heima already has three outlets and a large following. Behind its success is Rossy who, with business partner and husband Bong, conceptualized Heima's hip design aesthetics when it first opened in 2009 in a small space at Cubao X.

"I was still at my day job, which is interior designing for a big design firm in Manila," Rossy recalled. She added that Bong, who is in IT and not a designer himself, is "more of a design enthusiast." He's also the partnership's marketing guy, while Rossy is the creative director.

Rossy and Bong, both fans of the Icelandic band Sigur Rs, named their store after one of the group's songs, whose title means "home."

Most of Heima's clients are young couples or homeowners, said Rossy.

"Our designs are nothing too serious so they won't be intimidated," she said.

"When we started kasi, people were asking, 'What's the concept behind Heima?' As an interior designer, I was always looking for a store na parang home siya pero fun 'yung dating. Not the typical home stores na parang you'll see," she added.

INDIANAPOLIS Chip Kalleen, owner of Indianapolis-based Kalleen & Co., will lend his design talent to give guests at the third annual Indiana Artisan Marketplace a new experience: room settings showcasing furnishings and decor by Indiana's highest-quality artists.

Kalleen will design two spaces - a dining room and bathroom - at the marketplace, an art and food experience. The annual tradeshow is April 6-7 at the State Fairgrounds, with an opening exclusively for designers, retailers, and other wholesale buyers from noon to 6:30 p.m. April 5.

"The Indiana Artisan Marketplace is a chance to buy one-of-a-kind artwork, furnishings, accessories, and food products directly from the Hoosiers who make it, meet the artisans, and take home pieces that will be enjoyed in your family today and for generations to come," said Eric Freeman, Indiana Artisan director. "Chip has been designing commercial and residential projects for many years in Indianapolis, and is associated with some of the city's best art and design events. He will design two rooms that will be built in the Expo Hall, with the primary goal of showing guests how easily and beautifully they can incorporate authentic Artisan work into their own homes."

Kalleen already has visited some of the studios of Indiana Artisans who build high-quality furniture to select individual pieces that will "anchor" both spaces. Furnishings will run the gamut from rustic to refined and highlight some of the diverse design talent in the state. In addition he will select accessory items such as paintings, pottery, textiles, metalwork, glass, and unique food items to complete the rooms from the more than 150 artisans participating in the annual tradeshow.

"The work of nearly 250 artisans has juried into Indiana Artisan, and it makes quite an impressive collection of talent," said Kalleen, a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). He has served on the board of the Hoosier Salon Patrons Association and currently serves on the boards of the Design Arts Society at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Indiana Glass Arts Alliance.

"Creating these room settings is a challenge only because there is so much beautiful and dynamic work from which to choose," he said.

Kalleen brings more than 35 years of design experience to the Indiana Artisan Marketplace. His design work has received a number of awards and been published in both local and national magazines as well as newspapers and several coffee table books.

His design for the "Guest Retreat" in the 1996 St. Margaret's Decorators' Show House was selected by House Beautiful magazine as one of the "Ten Best Show House Rooms in America" in 1996. He has authored a number of articles over the years and is co-author of the book Indianapolis Architecture published in 1975.

After a string of horse deaths over the last ten years, this week's Grand National will now be run over new plastic fences in the hope of making the course less dangerous.

Last year joint favourite Synchronised and outsider According to Pete had to be put down after falling at the sixth fence of the Grand National, the infamous Becher's Brook at Aintree racecourse, Liverpool.

The deaths led to public outcry and calls from animal welfare groups for the Grand National to be banned.

Fences 2

I have no icons on my desktop. I have two wide-screen monitors totaling almost 4,000 horizontal pixels, and not a single icon because one icon often begets many, ending up with a messy, disorganized desktop and crowding my beautiful wallpapers. But $10 utility Fences 2 has me rethinking my anti-icon stance.

Stardock's Fences 2 eliminates all of the annoyances traditionally linked to desktop icons, and makes what's good about them even better. Installed, it feels like such a natural part of Windows, it makes me wonder how come Microsoft doesn't build a feature like it right into the OS.

At its simplest, Fences groups your icons into virtual folders on the desktop. You can have a bunch of icons for your favorite applications, and another bunch for frequently used documents, and yet another for Internet bookmarks. It's a similar system to what some fastidious users may already be doing on their ownbut it makes the process of grouping your icons together easy enough for the rest of us. When you first launch Fences, it offers to group your existing icons automatically, so you get three fences to begin with. They won't be perfect, but they're easy to customize: You can rename them, pull icons out or put new ones in, and move them around the desktop.

For reasons of both aesthetics and privacy, you may not always going to want icons cluttering up your wallpaper, so Fences can hide the icons once you leave the desktop idle for a while. When you want to reveal the icons again, double-click anywhere on the desktop and all of your Fences pop back into view. It's instant, and it's my favorite feature because it lets me enjoy my wallpapers and still use the icons whenever I want them. You can also disable the timeout and opt to hide or show the icons yourself.

Taking a cue from the world of smartphones, Fences 2 introduces a feature called Desktop Pages. Just like home screens on a smartphone, you can have multiple "pages" on your desktop. Bring your mouse to the edge of the screen, hold the mouse button down, and drag: The screen swipes over, revealing more space for fences. This sounds like it could conflict with some Windows 8 gestures which also use the edges of the screen, but on my desktop it doesn't. If moving your mouse all the way to the edge of the screen is too much work, you can also click the desktop, hold down Alt, and rotate the mousewheel to quickly flip pages.

Another interesting feature new to Fences 2 is Folder Portals, which let you place interactive shortcuts to folders on your desktop. If you have a folder with many files and subfolders, you can create a Folder Portal for it, and then get at those files directly. It's basically like having that folder constantly open on your desktop. It's an interesting feature, but has drawbacks: You can't use the keyboard to quick-search within a folder, and you can't drill down to subfolders (clicking a subfolder just opens it in your file manager).

Fences was an excellent product to begin with, and Fences 2 keeps the good parts and largely manages to avoid bloat. I'm not convinced Folder Portals are all that useful, but Desktop Pages are a welcome addition, and feel fast and natural. Even if you're not the sort of user who enjoys having icons on your desktop, Fences 2 may convert you. Give it a shot.
