SHILLONG: With the rejection of the nomination paper of HSPDP member Ardent M Basaiawmoit on Friday, the Congress nominee, AT Mondal, is set to be elected as the next Speaker on Monday.
Mondal filed two sets of nomination papers, supported by proposers, Ronnie V Lyngdoh and Martin M Danggo and seconded by Limison Sangma and P Syiem at the Assembly Secretariat in Khyndailad.
An Assembly Secretariat official said that while there was one proposer, Saleng Sangma (Independent) for Basaiawmoit, the candidate was not seconded by any one and hence his nomination was not found to be valid.
Surprisingly, no HSPDP legislator accompanied Basaiawmoit.
When contacted, the HSPDP president HS Lyngdoh said that the party did not endorse the candidature of Basaiawmoit.
The party is not aware of the move as he went by himself, Lyngdoh said.
According to Lyngdoh, a committee of the party was supposed to meet and discuss the matter, but Ardent went to the Assembly alone, though he had informed the party chief later.

The floor plans at Maravilla Vistas range from 1,939 to 2,454 square feet with prices starting in the $190,000s. Two model homes are scheduled to open soon.
The Diana is a two-story home with 2,127 square feet of living space. It includes three bedrooms, 2 baths and a two-car garage.
"This is one of our 'upside-down' homes, which are very popular," Glaser said.
The Diana's main living spaces are on the second floor, offering residents a unique layout and second-floor views from the dining room, great room, kitchen and master bedroom. The home's laundry room, bonus room and secondary bedrooms are on the first floor.
The Cassandra is a three-story, 2,454-square-foot home that includes three bedrooms, three baths, kitchen island, loft, bonus room, two-car garage and Ryland's signature rooftop deck. The dining room, kitchen, great room and one secondary bedroom with a full bath are on the third floor.

Rooftop Decks At Maravilla
Grills are now banned from decks at Eagan multi-housing units, even when not in use.
Last year, following a number of fires, the city council banned the use of grills -- both gas and charcoal -- on decks or patios of housing complexes in which at least three units share a common hallway.
"We were one of the last cities in Dakota County to adopt (an ordinance)," Eagan Fire Chief Mike Scott said this week.
But enforcing the city code was tricky because it was tough to tell whether the grills residents stored on decks were actually being used, Scott said.
So this week, the city council passed an ordinance amendment that prohibits grills, along with charcoal and lighter fluid, from being stored on decks or patios of complexes in which at least three units share a common hallway.
On a ground-floor patio, grills and lighting materials now must be kept at least 15 feet away from a building.
A common question is why townhouses are not included in the new rules, Scott said.
To draft the ordinance, he said, Eagan used state rules adopted in the 1990s that cities could voluntarily adopt.
"The intent of it was that on the second or third floors of an apartment building, the only way to get out is through a common hallway," he said. "And if it's filled with smoke, you don't have a way out. So you're putting other families in jeopardy."
When the state rules were adopted, one of Eagan's largest fires was mentioned as a reason, Scott said.
