MEADVILLE Requests for roofing repairs are pouring into the United Way of Western Crawford County and Community Improvement Center in anticipation of the Adopt a Roof program, a roughly five-week service project expected to relieve structural and financial strains on eligible residents. And now, the program has expanded to encompass indoor home improvements in case roofing projects are delayed by inclement weather.
We have received a ton of requests thus far for roofing projects benefiting those in need, said Lauren Lowery of United Way of Western Crawford County, who opened up the project hotline to accommodate indoor requests as well.
Those who have a roof or indoor repair that they cannot afford may call 724-5948 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. through Wednesday to apply for the free help. Also, skilled volunteers or project donors may call the United Way of Western Crawford County to lend assistance by calling 337-1251.
The program is currently moving forward with property assessments to determine whether certain repairs are feasible for a team of skilled volunteers and workers from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps.
With labor expected to begin the week of March 11, organizers hope to have projects selected and scheduled early this week, according to David Roncolato, Allegheny College director of community service and Make a Difference Day organizer.
Were very pleased with the response of skilled supervisors and their willingness to step up and help us with this project, he said. We plan to start mapping out the details of the first weeks work and notify the homeowners.
A quick turnaround on phone-in applications has helped expedite the request process, Roncolato said. Once residents reach the local United Way on the request hotline, they can rate their potential project on a scale of one to four, with one being complex and large-scale and four running more along the lines of coating leaks.
Callers will be asked to submit financial information over the phone to determine eligibility. If a project is chosen, it will be matched with a skilled supervisor until its completion. The program will ultimately conclude on April 18, according to Lowery.
The goal is to accomplish at least three projects a week, weather permitting, Roncolato said. Were also welcoming skilled volunteers to help on the weekends.
While the organizations involved appreciate extra help, funding for materials remains the biggest need.

Roofing project expands to include indoor improvements
A roofing job for a municipal building in Dartmouth thats home to emergency services and other local government offices will cost taxpayers about $582,960.
According to a recent staff report, Halifax regional council should authorize the expense covering the 1970s-era Eric Spicer Building because the roof has exceeded its life span and has suffered repeated roof leaks.
The recommendation is to be considered by regional council on Tuesday. The Spicer building houses emergency measures offices, Halifax Regional Municipalitys 911 call centre, a satellite office for Halifax Regional Police and several other municipal offices.
Council could choose not to follow staffs advice, the report said, but that isnt recommended especially in light of the sensitive nature of the operations and equipment in the building.
If approved, the roofing work is to start by April 15, or within four weeks of a later tender award, and be finished by Oct. 11. Staff have recommended the job go to the lowest bidder, McCarthys Roofing Ltd.
For safety reasons, during the roofing job itll be necessary to shut down a number of antennae due to the high emissivity of the radio waves, staff said in the report to council.
Should a 911 (call) or EMO emergency occur while the contractor is working on the roof, the contractor and his crew must vacate the roof as the antennae will be immediately reactivated.
To minimize the risk of interruptions to (emergency management) operations, staff will be included in the construction planning and scheduling of the roofing, said the report, prepared by project manager Kevin Rideout.
It said work on the Mount Hope Avenue structure was estimated to cost $750,000 in a previously approved project budget.
The building, originally designed as a manufacturing facility, was named after a Dartmouth police officer killed in the line of duty in 1975.

Fallbrook Bath & Kitchen Co, Inc. has been remodeling homes locally for 10 years and owner Tony Raia takes pride in the companys top-notch craftsmanship and impeccable service.
As a general contractor with a business previously located in Laguna Niguel, Raia relocated his home and business in 2003, after he and his wife Carol ended up liking the atmosphere of Fallbrook.
Remodeling a "working" room, such as a kitchen or bath, definitely brings some adjustments while the project is being completed. Since kitchen and bath remodels usually take Raia four weeks to accomplish, he tries to help alleviate the inconveniences of the temporary absence of the facilities. He has sometimes provided a temporary sink while the countertops are being installed, in consideration of his clients.
Organization and planning are crucial to a successful remodel. Raia said he will not start the project until the cabinets are "en route," and the other materials have been obtained. Raia also prides himself on trying to keep the workspace as clean as possible, since remodeling can create dust.
Fallbrook Bath & Kitchen is a general contracting firm, and therefore rarely needs to use subcontractors. From the project design phase, through the installation phase, Raias company provides plumbing, electrical, carpentry, tile and stonework, as well as cabinet installation, lighting, and refinishing. There are certain items that Raia insists be constructed a specific way, such as a shower pan. Raia says that he does not use prefabricated pans or fiberglass tubs, and has a certain standard for other elements in the bath as well. Instead of installing "greenboard" or "Hardibacker," he uses a specific method that involves cement, which is widely used in Europe and by other meticulous contractors in the industry.
"We like to work on bathrooms that end Advertisement [ Pala Mesa Resort ] up looking like spa-baths." said Raia.
When asked about his relationships with clients, Raia said, "You must treat people in the right way. They have invited you into their home. Every prospective client that I meet, I ask to call my referral list."
Whether returning a call, writing up an estimate, or arriving at the jobsite, punctuality is very important to Raia. Many of his clients end up contacting him for other projects such as windows, doors, flooring, entertainment centers, and fireplace makeovers.
Fallbrook Bath & Kitchen is in the process of a transition, with Raia planning on handing over the reins to his son-in-law, Matthew Bellafaire. Bellafaire has worked with Raia for 13 years, and has now become a partner in Raias business.

The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) has released the top 10 kitchen and bath design trends to watch out for in the coming year. The annual design trends survey witnessed participation from over 300 American and Canadian member-designers, who reported the materials, product types, and design styles they specified over the final three months of 2012.
"As members of the NKBA, the kitchen and bath industry's foremost professional association, our designers demonstrate comprehensive knowledge in kitchen and bath design," said John Morgan, 2013 NKBA president. "They excel in evaluating homeowners' specific needs and creating designs that inspire. It will be interesting to discover the trends that emerge from the rich experience of these creative, talented individuals."
The overall design trends identified for 2012 included gray color schemes in both kitchens and baths. Used currently in 55 percent of kitchens and 55 percent of bathrooms, gray tones have escalated since 2010 and over the past year.
Continuing a previous trend, transitional-style kitchens and baths have surpassed traditional styles, a longstanding favorite until 2012. While the use of quartz finishes was in slight decline last year, it has surfaced as a trendsetter this year second only to granite.
The survey showed no growth in consumer outlays. According to the latest report, homeowners were spending more on their kitchen and bath remodels a year ago. The total cost of the average kitchen and of the average bath design in 2012 was $51,050 and $18,575, respectively, but the most recent figures have dipped to $47,308 in kitchens, while staying steady at $18,538 in bathrooms.
A few of the other top trending design components include white painted cabinetry, glass backsplashes, LED lighting, touch-activated faucets and satin-nickel finishes in kitchens; and ceramic/porcelain tiles and undermount sinks in bathrooms.
