CORPUS CHRISTI Tuloso-Midway ISD trustees and district officials got a glimpse Thursday night of the work completed on eight high school classrooms to rid them of mold as part of a 2011 bond program.
The mold remediation, which cost about $1.2 million, is part of a $36 million bond voters approved in November 2011.
Trustees toured three of the eight affected classrooms at Tuloso-Midway High School as part of a special board meeting Thursday.
The bond program also includes the construction of a 400-seat performing arts center near the front of the high school at 2653 McKinzie Road.
Tuloso-Midway Independent School District officials plan to break ground on the performing arts center project Monday night.
During Thursday's meeting, attendees also viewed a $400,000 revamp of the high school's Navy Junior ROTC unit complete with indoor shooting range for air rifles and an armory. Attendees also toured a new $270,000 tech shop for district technical staff and a new $200,000 discipline center.
Other district upgrades as part of the bond will include a new baseball field, an early childhood classroom addition to the intermediate school, a revamp of the middle school auditorium and an agriculture barn, officials have said.
The mold remediation was completed by Texas-based contractor SpawGlass and designed by local architecture firm Gignac & Associates and San Antonio-based firm PBK Architects.
District officials said a moisture barrier in the eight classroom walls behind the exterior brick weren't sealed properly when the high school was built in 1982.
In addition to moisture, officials found mold, said Ricardo Rodriguez with REM Consulting Group, which manages the district's construction projects.
