Get Your Home Ready for Work and School this Winter – Longview News-Journal

    - October 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Although preparing your home for winter is a fairly consistent process year-to-year, many homes have seen significantly more use this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. If your home will serve as your office or school throughout the winter months, its important to address issues that may have been noticed but tolerable during winters past.

Consider these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry to help ensure your home is ready before winter weather strikes.

Beyond proper physical and structural considerations of winter preparations, the increased daily usage of your home naturally increases the importance of indoor air quality. Since windows and doors will likely be closed more often, moisture levels within your home can be significantly affected. Use a humidifier, if necessary, to maintain a relative humidity between 45-50%, which is healthier and can feel more comfortable. It can also keep wooden doors and windows functioning properly and wood furniture and floors looking good.

To keep your furnace from failing when you need it most, get it inspected by a professional before you need to rely on it to heat your home in the dead of winter. If youre not leaving the house and turning down the thermostat each day, this will be especially important this year. Regular tune-ups can prolong your furnaces life, help prevent carbon monoxide leaks and ensure your unit is working at maximum efficiency. If a whole-house humidifier is included as part of the heating system, also inspect the humidifier and replace the element, if necessary.

Air infiltration is one of the largest culprits of reductions in a homes efficiency. Small air leaks can add up to significant heat loss and a corresponding increase in energy consumption. If replacing window screens with storm windows and installing a storm door on your house isnt realistic, increase energy efficiency by sealing gaps around window and door moldings with caulk to help keep heat from escaping. If any pipes or ducts travel through an exterior wall of your home, you can also use caulking and weather-stripping to help block potential entry points for cold air.

Improper drainage away from the home is one of the biggest causes of water leaking into basements and crawlspaces. Gutters and downspouts have the single purpose of routing water away from your home to help prevent damage to your foundation. Once leaves have fallen and before the first snow, ensure your gutters are properly secured and clear of debris. Clogged gutters can lead to improper drainage and potential overflow, ice damming or other water-related issues. Also adjust downspouts so they direct water at least 5 feet from the house to help minimize the possibility of water run-off back toward the foundation.

When water freezes, it expands. Any residual water in pipes that is exposed to freezing temperatures, including interior lines located in exterior walls or unheated areas, can burst. Start by disconnecting hoses and shutting off exterior faucets, draining any water that remains in them and storing hoses indoors to prevent cracks. Drain any other pipes, valves or in-ground sprinklers that may be exposed to the elements and, for an extra layer of protection, wrap water spigots with covers to prevent damage. Sometimes a simple trick like keeping a cabinet door cracked open to allow warm air into the space can prevent frozen pipes.

The global electric heat tracing market size is expected to grow from USD 1.7 billion in 2020 to USD 2.5 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 8.2% -…

    - October 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

New York, Sept. 30, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Reportlinker.com announces the release of the report "Electric Heat Tracing Market with COVID-19 Impact, by Type, Application, Vertical And Region - Global Forecast to 2025" - https://www.reportlinker.com/p05208347/?utm_source=GNW

The major factor restraining the growth of the electric heat tracing market is the devastating effects of overlapping of heating cables. The main purpose of using an electrical heat tracing system is to compensate for heat loss and maintain the process temperature.

Hence, the heating cables should not touch, crossover, and overlap themselves after the installation since the overlapping of cables results in overheating and burnout and can damage the heat tracing system beyond repair. This is expected to impact the electric heat tracing market negatively in coming years. The market is expected to decline in 2020 mainly due to the impact of COVID-19.As the oil & gas industry is one of the most impacted industries in 2020, players in this industry are focusing on reducing CAPEX, which would affect the electric heat tracing market.

Though the market is expected to be impacted in 2020, it is expected to start to recover by 2021 and will fully recover by 2022.

Self-regulating: The fastest-growing segment of the electric heat tracing market, by typeSelf-regulating is the fastest-growing segment of the electric heat tracing market, by type.In self-regulating heat tracing systems, heating cables are designed and built to regulate their output according to the requirements.

The heat output is automatically adjusted in response to the increase or decrease of ambient temperatures. The self-regulating feature of the system prevents the creation of high surface temperature.

Hence, there are negligible chances of any fire hazard even in the presence of inflammable gases or liquids in and around the pipelines. Moreover, infinitely parallel heating circuit enables cutting self-regulating heating cables to any length in the field or during the design process, thereby minimizing waste and increasing installation flexibility.

These advantages are expected to propel the demand for self-regulating cables during the forecast period.Freeze protection & process temperature maintenance: The largest segment of the electric heat tracing market, by applicationThe electric heat tracing market for freeze protection & process temperature maintenance application is expected to hold the largest market share from 2019 to 2025.The freeze protection application is especially important since freezing can damage pipes and equipment.

During low-temperature conditions, it becomes important for various end-user industries to protect their products or materials carrying pipelines and preserve vessels and tanks against freezing. Also, in the process temperature maintenance application, generally, there is a need to maintain a higher temperature of fluids, such as fuel oil, acids, and fertilizers.

There are numerous upcoming oil & gas and chemical projects planned across major regions such as North America and Europe, which is expected to increase the demand for electric heat tracing systems for freeze protection & process temperature applications during the forecast period.

North America: The fastest growing region in the electric heat tracing marketThe North American region is expected to dominate the electric heat tracing market and is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Replacement of conventional systems with electric heat tracing systems and the expansion of oil and gas production pipelines, increasing adoption of electric heat tracing systems for freeze protection and floor heating applications in countries such as the US and Canada, and various new oil & gas and chemical projects planned in North America in the next 3 to 5 years are among the major factors driving the market growth in the region.

The study contains insights from various industry experts, ranging from component suppliers to Tier 1 companies and OEMs. The break-up of the primaries is as follows: By Company Type: Tier 1 45%, Tier 2 30%, and Tier 3 25% By Designation: C-level Executives 40%, Directors 35%, and Others 25% By Region: North America 45%, Europe 30%, APAC 15%, and RoW 10%

Practical Tips to Winterize Your Home This Fall from Window Nation – Herald-Mail Media

    - October 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

FULTON, Md., Sept. 30, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --With the thermometer slowly starting to drop, now is the ideal time to prep your home for winter and tackle any projects lingering on that to-do list. Especially as more people use their homes as their office and classroom these days, homeowners are truly starting to notice more things in their home that need to be addressed thanks to all the extra time spent there. Winterizing your home and tackling small projects from DIY to calling in the professionals can result in not only saving hundreds of dollars in energy bills, but can serve as a creative outlet and nice distraction.

In fact, according to the Los Angeles Times, the home improvement industry continues to experience an increase in demand, as more Americans across the country are investing in home upgrades than in previous years. MarketWatch adds that since COVID-19 emerged, younger homeowners particularly millennials are among the highest spenders within this category. Bank of America recently polled over 1,050 Americans, revealing more than 70 percent of participants surveyed have performed home improvement projects this year and plan to complete additional renovations come 2021.

"We've always been in the business of making people feel happy, comfortable and safe in their homes, which has become even more important amid this time of massive uncertainly and with colder weather quickly approaching and we don't take this responsibility lightly," says Harley Magden, CEO of Window Nation, one of the country's largest window replacement companies with 25 years of combined experience servicing customers. "Replacing windows can have a huge impact on families' daily routines right now, such as brightening a spare bedroom turned office space with more natural light or providing better noise reduction for children while distance learning."

In terms of winterizing a home, an easy place to start is looking at window conditions. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape.

"Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced," explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation who had 45 years of experience in the industry. "Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes fromwind, water infiltration and other inclement weather. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are unknowingly wasting costly heat."

On average, people spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling. However, if new windows aren't in this year's budget, homeowners can opt for insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, as well as place draft snakes on windowsills. Adding storm windows to existing panes is another cost-effective way to increase energy efficiency.

Kasunic also suggests replacing the weather-stripping around doors if light appears around the edges. For less than $20, homeowners can noticeably reduce electrical bills throughout the year.

Beyond windows, exterior outlets, plumbing/utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes. Individuals are also encouraged to have their furnaces professionally cleaned and inspected, as well as roofs and gutters, because they're more of a hassle to fix when temperatures are frigid. It's also a good idea to cover air conditioning units outside (a quick search on Amazon can yield inexpensive covers for under $40). Mobile apps, like Energy Cost Calculator, Smappee Energy Monitor and MyEarth, can also help users understand energy habits to reduce their overall costs and carbon footprints.

Finally, experts advise covering water heaters and changing the furnace filters, so your appliances don't have to work as hard. And, if you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that fall is the best time of year for both installation and price.

"We understand not everyone needs, wants or has the means to focus on home renovations right now," explains Magden. "They have much bigger issues. But, for those that do and seek professional help, we have a no-contact solution to make the process as safe, seamless and convenient as possible, so our customers don't have to worry about another challenge."

In an effort to ensure the safety of all customers, employees and their families amid coronavirus, Window Nation is now offering homeowners the option to receive a virtual consultation and estimate via video conferencing. They can upload photos to receive precise measurements, and installations are completed with minimal disruption. Depending on a customer's individual preferences, needs and circumstances, Window Nation experts are still available to provide in-home consultations and education, while strictly adhering to CDC safety and sanitation guidelines.

3 Things to Consider When Purchasing Replacement Windows – Northwest Herald

    - October 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fall is a perfect time to consider upgrading your home with replacement windows. The windows of your home play several important roles: they provide safety, natural light, exterior curb appeal, and energy efficiency. As windows age, they can lose some of their ability to provide these benefits to homeowners. Here are 3 things to consider when selecting replacement windows:

    1. Choose the most energy-efficient window within your budget. "Replacement windows are a fairly large investment," explained Jeremy Ahrens, Sales Manager for Alexander Lumber in Woodstock. "By selecting the most energy-efficient windows, you will benefit from the energy savings that your windows provide much more quickly." It is estimated that up to 30% of the air that is heated or cooled inside your home is lost through windows and doors. With updated, more modern windows, homeowners are able to prevent more heat loss during the winter months (and loss of cool air during the summer) due to better insulation.

    2. Select a window that fits your home's style. "Windows are no longer just white," added Ahrens. "Most windows are available in a wide variety of colors and a wide variety of grille configurations that fit the style of any home."

    3. Test drive your windows. "It's important to select your windows in person," said Ahrens. "Visit a showroom to make sure the windows operate and look the way you want."

Replacement windows provide peace of mind to homeowners on many fronts: they can offer better protection from intruders, provide UV protection for residents of the home (and help keep furniture from fading), provide better curb appeal from outside the home, and increase the home's property value. With new windows, homeowners have less maintenance in regards to cleaning, repainting, and refinishing that may be necessary with older windows.

Windows replacement: Types of replacement windows – Business MattersBusiness Matters

    - October 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

There is a lot of dilemmas involved when it comes to carrying out windows replacement. This is usually a complex process that involves following a lot of steps. One of the daunting tasks in window replacement is choosing the right replacement windows to use in your home. It is always challenging to decide between different styles and options available in the market.

Different people have varying preferences for replacement windows. According to Total Home Windows and Doors, such preferences are normally influenced by the space where windows will be used, type of home, style and the side where the windows are located in your home. To make the process of windows replacement easier for you in order to save time, we have highlighted standard replacement windows in terms of style and material, and the implication of each for you. Continue reading for more insights.

Windows replacement materials come in different varieties such as:

If you want something timeless for your home, you can never go wrong with wood. You can style or stain it in your desired shape and colours. Hardwood mainly is awesome because it is durable than softwood.

Of course, wood is expensive and more flexible. It can be repainted if you want to change your homes colour into a classic one. It requires high maintenance to maintain its beautiful appearance.

Fibreglass is definitely an excellent option if you want something durable with low maintenance. It is ideal for homeowners looking for energy-efficient frames. They can also endure extreme temperatures without affecting their efficiency.

When compared to vinyl, fibreglass provides more colour options. Windows made from these frames have bigger glass views since they have thin frames, making your aesthetics more striking.

This is another low maintenance windows replacement material. Windows made from vinyl are relatively cheap when compared to other window replacement materials. They have limited colour options, but are great in energy-efficiency. Since they are manufactured at low costs, homeowners can enjoy their benefits without breaking their budgets.

Opening a single-hung window happens from the bottom part. They are fixed at the top, but if you want to ventilate your home, open them from the bottom.

Double-hung window replacement operates like single-hung ones. The main difference is for double-hung; you can open them from the top or the bottom sides. These windows are ideal for homeowners with pets and children.

When considering ease of cleaning, single-hung windows are preferable, especially when you want to install a huge window that is hard to reach the top. They are ideal because since a lot of closing and opening is done, they are less likely to have fixed dirt.

Single and double-hung windows replacement are great options for your living room or bedroom, where ventilation is needed in plenty. For bathroom windows, double-hung are ideal since they can open from the top side, allowing steam to get out.

These windows operate on a track. They provide a classic look to your home and operate the same way as sliding doors. You can open them fully or partially, depending on the amount of ventilation you want in your home.

If you want to have an excellent view of your exterior, these windows are a perfect choice. They have large glass areas, and you can choose to add a pattern for aesthetics. Additionally, if your homes orientation allows lighting, you can enjoy minimized power bills as you utilize natural lighting. Sliding windows are ideal for placing in the kitchen, bathroom, and living room.

Approach different suppliers when you are already set about what you want for your windows replacement project. Choose a great style, and you can even customize it to suit your specifications and to make your home more appealing from the outside and also complement your interior dcor. Then, do not forget to look at your pockets limits, so you do not end straining after the investment. Remember, window replacement is not all that you need to do!

121st Precinct to offer free window etching to protect Staten Islanders’ vehicles against theft – SILive.com

    - October 4, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Do you want to get your car windows etched for free?

The 121st Police Precinct in Graniteville will offer free etching next Friday afternoon to inscribe residents' Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) into the windows of their vehicles.

Car thieves typically remove the VIN so that a car cannot be traced, but etching it means the windows would have to be replaced in order for a stolen car to be sold.

The NYPD calls VIN etching a strong deterrent to thieves.

Auto thefts on Staten Island have sharply risen during recent months, the Advance/SILive.com previously reported.

So far this year there have been 169 grand larceny auto incidents reported to the NYPD representing a 35% increase since last year during the same period when 125 incidents were reported, according to the NYPD CompStat.

The free etching event will be held in the parking lot of the International Christian Center Church located at 1501 Richmond Ave. from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the 121st Precinct said in a tweet.

    OPERATION ID

During Fridays event, residents can also sign up for Operation ID, an NYPD initiative that the agency says helps protect New Yorkers' personal property.

The serial numbers of electronic devices are recorded in an NYPD database, and if stolen police say they can often recover the item through the recorded serial numbers or through activating locator software built into the device.

If any of the registered items are stolen, police are often able to recover the devices through the recorded serial numbers or through activating locator software built into the device, according to the NYPD.
