Landscape architect Morgan Wheelocks life work encompasses a range of styles and earthy canvasses.

Wheelock, former chairman of the Architectural Review Commission, has for decades designed gardens and landscapes for estates in Palm Beach, New England and across the country. He has called his firms redesign of the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden at The Society of the Four Arts the best dance of my life.

Farther out, hes created a sculpture garden in London; crafted landscaping for a horse farm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and won accolades for, among other projects, The United States Armed Forces Memorial Garden in Caen, France.

In recognition of his work and his willingness to mentor budding landscape architects who have become award-winners themselves, Wheelock will be inducted into the New England Design Hall of Fame, in the landscape design category, on Nov. 8 at a ceremony in Boston.

I didnt believe it when they called me, Wheelock said from his West Palm Beach office. I was wow quite surprised but very excited and grateful.

His philosophy about landscape design has evolved over the years, he said.

I believe landscape architecture is a medium through which people can retain their biological connection to the land, said the Harvard-educated landscape architect. Executed properly, a gardens form and composition can produce moments that are spiritual and healing, he said.

The redesign of the 2.6-acre sculpture garden at The Society of the Four Arts, which was unveiled in 2007, is a prime example, he said. The southeast quadrant has a naturalistic feel, while the northwest quadrant is architecturally controlled, Wheelock said.

One finds strong geometry on that side of the garden and romantic natural landscape on the other side, he said.

Wheelock said the project that touched him most emotionally was the Armed Services Memorial Garden, which he designed in 1994. It was a truly international effort. Craftsmen in Carrara, Italy, used a saw designed in Germany for the project, to cut and shape 3,000 pieces of granite from Finland, Wheelock said.

Honored landscape architect shares career highlights

SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) -- Police are searching for suspects after a Seekonk landscaping company had expensive equipment and a pickup truck stolen from them.

Cryan Landscape Contractors, Inc. tells us that thieves broke into their fenced yard, located at 102 Pond St., during the early hours of Saturday morning.

They broke into three locked trailers and stole backpack blowers, hedge trimmers, weed whackers, and a large push blower. They loaded it into the back of one of the company's marked Ford F350 utility trucks and crashed through a locked gate and a fence to get away.

Cryan received a call from residents of Finch Avenue in Pawtucket, who said that a truck with the company's logo on it had been sitting outside of their house for a couple of days. The truck was heavily damaged and contained none of the stolen equipment.

Police are currently examining the vehicle for evidence. In the meantime, Cryan Landscape has issued a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

You might hear Maryhelen Zopfi's yard before you see it.

It's the sound of water cascading down a homemade waterfall into a 5,000-gallon pond, where dozens of Cheerios-eating koi swim and splash about.

The stream begins its tumble above her privacy fence at 1909 N. Mobile Villa, in a shady Lutz neighborhood.

The pond and other landscaping features earned Zopfi recognition as Hillsborough County's "water-wise homeowner" for 2012. The award recognizes people and businesses using water-conservation strategies in landscaping.

Emphasizing substantial aquatic features might seem at odds with an award promoting water conservation. But Zopfi's yard shows what can be accomplished by carefully managing water when establishing and maintaining a home's landscape rather than doing without.

The pond in the front yard, where Zopfi has created what she refers to as her "subtropical rainforest," is the smaller of the property's two bodies of water. A converted swimming pool in the sunnier backyard contains 16,000 gallons. Once the pools were filled, Zopfi says, they became suitable habitat for koi and other fish. Rainwater maintains the ponds' water levels; the system recirculates the water and uses scavenger fish to help clean things up.

Zopfi conserves water on the property by harvesting rainwater with barrels, directing downspout water into plant beds, using micro-irrigation and hand watering, and mitigating potential runoff.

Dividing her property into two distinct environments subtropical and shady in front; sunny and relatively arid (as arid as Florida gets) in back reflects a major principle of water conservation: Right plant, right place. As Zopfi explains: "You have to raise children; plants, you just put them in the right place and they'll do good."

Zopfi, who grew up in Bartow, points to her shade-loving orchids hanging throughout the verdant front-yard canopy of plants and trees, where they nourish themselves on morning dew. "Some orchids need to hang in the shade and some in the sun," she said. "I have orchids in the backyard that need morning sun, so they're back there. But these just want to hang under the trees, get the morning dew and just hang here."

Aquatic features highlight 'water-wise' yard

Foy and Colleen Sulyer said they have tried to get the landscaper they hired to level their yard or, at the very least, fill in the holes in their newly-landscaped yard.

They said the man tells them he will show up and take care of it but neverdoes.

Ill tell ya, its a mess, Foy Sulyer said.

If it looks like Sulyer is playing hop scotch in his yard, youre close.

Hes actually trying to keep from tripping and falling in the landmine of holes hidden in his yard.

But I dont figure its my fault, he said.

Last year Salyer contacted Mahans Lawn and Landscape of Chickasha to install grass and landscape the yard of his new home.

He said he paid DewayneMahan nearly $15,000 to get the job done.

So he just took after it and away he went. Sulyer said.

The first payment was acheck in the amount of $13,933.68.

Bangalore, Oct 22 (IANS) A private complaint was filed Monday against Karnataka Health Minister Aravind Limbavali and 10 others in the Lokayukta (ombudsman) trial court here for allegedly favouring real estate firm DLF Ltd. in a housing project on the city's outskirts.

Admitting the complaint of N. Nagaraj, who claimed to be an aggrieved party, Lokayukta Judge N.K. Sudhindra Rao has posted the case for hearing Nov 3.

"Limbavali favoured DLF in October 2009 for pecuniary gain by recommending to the civic body BBMP (Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike) to widen a narrow road leading to its housing project at Begur on the outskirts of south Bangalore in violation of the city's revised Master Plan (RMP 2015) and other governing rules," Nagaraj alleged in his complaint.

Limbavali, who was then higher education minister in the first BJP government, represents the Mahadevapura assembly constituency in east Bangalore.

Among other respondents is former BBMP commissioner Bharat Lal Meena.

The New Delhi-based DLF is building a residential township christened 'Westend Heights' near Begur, which will have about 1,000 houses in 25 blocks and other amenities, including landscape garden, swimming pool, play area, health facilities, 24x7 power back-up, a community hall and sports facilities.

The multi-crore housing project, which is at an advanced stage of construction, is expected to be completed by this year-end.

The complainant, who owns a land adjacent to the DLF project site, alleged that on Limbavali's recommendation, the BBMP had "unauthorisedly" permitted the real estate builder to widen the linking road to 24 metres from 18 metres, resulting in the encroachment of his land.

DLF has been embroiled in a major controversy over its land dealings with Robert Vadra, son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, as alleged by India Against Corruption (IAC) recently.

News - Wednesday, October 24, 2012 Menlo briefs: Belle Haven pool adds hours for water polo Although his contract with Menlo Park required operating the city's Belle Haven pool for only three months a year, Tim Sheeper of Menlo Swim and Sport will open the facility six days a week starting in November for water polo season, according to city staff.

His organization has been operating the pool on Saturdays from September through October by offering swim lessons as well as renting the pool to a local water polo organization. Due to limited space at Burgess Pool, Menlo Swim and Sport plans to provide practice space at Belle Haven from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and continue with swim lessons and rentals on Saturdays, staff said.

Search for Walgreens robber continues

It's not Halloween yet, but that didn't stop a man from donning a fake moustache before robbing a Walgreens in Menlo Park.

The man walked into the Santa Cruz Avenue store around 7:45 p.m. on Friday night and demanded money from a manager, according to police. After stuffing cash into a paper bag, he fled through the rear door. The robbery involved no weapon, witnesses said, and no one was hurt.

Police have yet to identify the suspect, described as a white male in his 40s with short dark hair, standing nearly 6 feet tall.

He wore a light hooded sweatshirt, green military-style jacket and dark pants. Completing the outfit were a blue baseball cap with multi-colored gloves, and of course, a moustache described in the report as "fake and costume like."

LOOKING at the development of garden design and landscaping in Sarawak over the last two decades, we have seen the industry grow by leaps and bounds.

Last week we focussed on Japanese ideals in garden design and this week we turn to China and its long history of landscape art.

Feng shui

These two words are direct translations of wind and water in Mandarin. The purpose of using feng shui in the garden is to create harmony. Those under the influence of Taoism believe in a cosmic energy called chi moving air or wind that is present everywhere.

According to this line of thought, it is of utmost importance to have chi flowing smoothly through the garden or house. This will apparently affect the inhabitants in terms of health, success, happiness and prosperity.

The art actually lies in influencing the flow of this cosmic energy to maximise the good fortune it imparts. Introducing some changes in the setting will allow for a smooth flow of chi. To an experienced feng shui practitioner, any space can be regarded as divided into eight sectors, following the earths magnetic or geological north and the rest southeast and west.

These techniques can be used in landscape design by controlling the colour, size, height, sound and shape of the plants, hardscape materials and the shape of the footpath or pool.

A friend named Dr Chang told me that having a pool of water in the east is less desirable for the younger generation, while in the west it is bad for the elders. This is because wind can create waves that will affect ones health.

You know the landscape is changing when Munster have to employ every marketing strategy in the book to fill Thomond Park for a Heineken Cup pool game.

Being offered the dawn shift at 12.45 on a Sunday certainly doesnt help.

After successive road trips to Heineken Cup champions Leinster, RaboDirect champions Ospreys and Racing Metro in Paris yielded nothing in terms of a win, Munster returned to Limerick yesterday hoping to draw strength and inspiration from their spiritual home.

In those circumstances, to finish with a four-try bonus point, Munster are entitled to feel a warm glow after this 33-point win.

While Rob Penney has banned talk of transition in the squad, the fact that Munster finished this game with JJ Hanrahan on the field, along with a whole host of players serving their apprenticeship at this level, does offer hope for the future.

That said, the quality of the opposition has to be put into context before anyone starts getting carried away. For the second week in a row Edinburgh were simply awful. For a side noted for their attacking prowess, going 160 minutes of Heineken Cup rugby without registering a single point, just tells you where they are at present.

Munster were offered a boost before kick-off with confirmation that the visitors try-scoring machine Tim Visser was forced off due to injury along with their out-half kicking ace Greig Laidlaw.

You just wondered where their points might come from. In the end, we didnt even get to find out who their replacement place-kicker was going to be as Edinburgh didnt even exert enough pressure to warrant a single kick at goal.

Native plants are more likely to succeed because theyve already adapted to the regions climate and soil, Jones explains. By pairing a few, choice plants with strong architecture, the space became balanced and eloquent.
