Coastal Capital Acquisition Corp. Subsidiary to Expand Product Distribution through Lowe's

PICAYUNE Two change orders dealing with the construction of the addition to historic City Hall for beautification purposes were questioned by council member Larry Breland at Tuesday evenings Picayune City Council meeting.

The changes had to do with changing the installation of vinyl composition tile to porcelain flooring and with upgrading the drop tiles for the ceilings to a more aesthetically pleasing type.

Changing the flooring from vinyl to porcelain will cost the city an additional $12,000. Breland asked for a reason to change the flooring. Public Works Director Eric Morris said not only would the porcelain flooring look better, but it would require less maintenance in waxing and other care.

Morris said within four years the city would recoup the cost of the upgrade by not needing to get the porcelain flooring waxed and maintained each year.

The council unanimously approved the change in the buildings flooring.

The second change order dealt with changing the ceiling tiles to a more aesthetically pleasing type with beveled edges and recessed support, Morris said. The cost for this change would add $3,303 to the citys construction bill.

This change prompted Breland to again ask again what the purpose of the change would be. Morris said it would make the public spaces of the building more attractive. Breland said at the current rate of changes being made, he fears the city will exceed the bond money borrowed to construct the addition, prompting the possibility of the city digging into other funds in order to finish the project.

I have a problem with us spending like that now, Breland said.

Breland then asked how much the air conditioning system would cost and if there are enough funds set aside to cover the expense. Morris said the cost of the air conditioning unit would be between $43,000 and $46,000.

A motion to approve the change in the type of ceiling tile as approved by council members Larry Watkins, Jason Todd Lane, Wayne Gouguet and Mayor Ed Pinero Jr., but opposed by Breland. Council member Lynn Bogan Bumpers was absent from Tuesdays meeting.

The annual architectural awards programme is run by the regional branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

Out of the 13 awards presented, Marlborough architecture scooped four:

The Brancott Estate Heritage Centre (commercial), designed by Fearon Hay Architects;

Cloudy Bay Shack (commercial), Paul Rolfe Architects and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects;

Okiwa Bay House (housing), Tennent + Brown Architects;

Wairau Valley House (housing), Parsonson Architects.

Fearon Hay interior designer Rufus Knight said that accommodating the exposed and elevated piece of land on which the Brancott Heritage Trust Centre sits in the design had been a challenge.

"The design that we were trying to get away from was placing a glass box on a hill," he said. "So, there was a lot of excavation and digging and actually stitching or inserting it into the land."

Tennent + Brown Architects design director Hugh Tennent said their company faced a similar challenge when designing Okiwa Bay House at Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds.

Property Damage Restoration Expert Says Changing Seasons Can Mean an Increased Risk for Home Fires

Days are getting shorter and cooler, holiday decorating plans are ramping up, and indoor entertainments are on the rise.All of these seasonal changes can increase the chance of a house fire, according to PuroClean property damage restoration specialists.

"The change in seasons brings a change in our daily routines," said Steve Leger, executive vice president of operations for PuroClean. "We use more lights and we turn them on earlier in the day. Electrical Fires The Facts: Between 2005 and 2009, firefighters in the U.S. responded to an average of 43,900 fires each year involving electrical systems and appliances. Watch for warning signs like discolored or warm wall outlets or flickering or dimming lights that could signal electrical problems that could result in a fire. If a homeowner suspects an electrical problem, he or she should contact a licensed electrician to investigate immediately.

Kitchen and Cooking Fires The Facts: Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen, and most kitchen fires involve the stovetop. Leger reminds home cooks never to leave the house with foods simmering on the stovetop and to keep flammable materials -- and children -- away from heat sources. Keep a lid handy to smother small grease fires, and then turn off the stovetop. For an oven fire, turn off the oven and leave the door closed. If more than a small, contained fire breaks out, leave the house, close the door behind you and call 9-1-1 or the fire department.

Candle Fires The Facts: On average, U.S. fire departments receive a report of a fire started by a candle every 40 minutes. More than one-third of these fires start in the bedroom and more than half start when candles are left to burn too close to flammable objects. One sure way to avoid fire hazards from candles is to use today's flameless candles, according to Leger.But, if only the "real thing" will do, then practice good "candle sense". Don't leave candles burning when you go to bed or to sleep. Use sturdy holders and blow the candle out before it burns down to the holder. And keep candles and matches away from children.

Reports from Tripoli late on Thursday indicated that Abu Shagur withdrew his cabinet line-up, which is mainly made up of technocrats.

Congress leader Mohammed Magarief said the list had not been approved by Congress and that Abu Shagur should present a new one by Sunday.

Earlier, protesters, who came mainly from areas not represented in the new government, stormed the parliament building in Tripoli while the National Congress was holding a session on the proposed cabinet, media reports said.

Abu Shagur on Wednesday announced and presented the line-up to the assembly for approval.

The protesters demanded the National Congress reject the proposed government and pick a replacement for Abu Shagur, a source inside the assembly told the independent news agency Solidarity Press.

"The president of the Congress talked with the protesters and promised to look into their demand," added the source.

The protesters said they came from areas that had joined the armed revolt that eventually toppled the regime of Muammar Gaddafi last year, and as such should be represented in the new government.

The protests occurred as some legislators expressed disdain for the cabinet.

"Although most of the Congress' members are not satisfied with the proposed names, (Congress) will not bow to any blackmailing or pressure," the spokesman for the assembly, Omar Humaydan, told reporters in Tripoli.

Libya assembly rejects government line-up

A Calgary contractor has been fined $15,000 in connection to roof collapse at a seniors facility in April 2011.

Canterbury Roofing was convicted Thursday of a provincial safety code offence for creating an unsafe condition after a pallet of building materials placed on the roof at Clifton Manor crashed through the roof and into the dining room where lunch was being served.

Kitchen staff and about 15 elderly residents were in the room just moments before, but were rushed out when they heard cracking noises.

No one was injured.

This is a very serious case, and we are very fortunate that the kitchen staff acted quickly for the safety of residents, says Kevin Griffiths, manager of building regulations and chief building official at the City of Calgary.

We will continue to prosecute such cases to send a clear message that construction site safety in Calgary must be taken seriously.

Judge Paul Mason of the Provincial Court of Alberta imposed the maximum penalty fine of $15,000 for a first offence allowed under the Safety Codes Act.

The court found Canterbury failed to take the necessary steps to ensure that the roof of Clifton Manor could sustain the weight of the roofing materials.

The pallet that went through the roof weighed roughly 1225 kilograms.

Canterbury Roofing declined to comment Thursday.
