A SOARING timber lattice structure, designed by ODonnell and Tuomey Architects and made entirely from Irish Sitka spruce, is in contention for the premier Golden Lion award at the 13th international architecture exhibition, La Biennale in Venice.

The irregularly-shaped installation, which rises to a height of nine metres and weighs several tonnes, dominates one of the rooms of the Arsenale di Venezias 600m-long Corderie, where long ropes were once made for the Venetian fleet.

John Tuomey recalled Dantes description in his Inferno of ships being made at the Arsenale and paid tribute to Gem Joinery and the Irish timber industry for their support in realising the project, which cost 150,000 to construct.

Sheila ODonnell said they were planning to make it in oak, but it would have been too expensive, at 250,000, and Sitka spruce was the only commercial timber produced in Ireland.

It is intended to dismantle the structure after La Biennale closes on November 25th and reassemble it at a suitable venue in Ireland. Stack A in the Custom House Docks is one possibility.

The ODonnell and Tuomey exhibit is one element of the strongest representation yet of Irish architects at La Biennale, the most important international showcase for contemporary architecture worldwide, with 56 countries participating this year.

The Irish pavilion features an elaborate see-saw, described by creators Heneghan Peng Architects as an oscillating bench; it is one of the hits of La Biennale because its so interactive. Its called Shifting Ground a play on the Common Ground theme chosen by the 2012 Biennale director, Sir David Chipperfield and its level is set at Venices high-water mark.

At its official opening, the Irish Ambassador to Italy, Patrick Hennessy, said Irelands participation in La Biennale showcases the rich pool of architectural talent available in Ireland and will lead to further opportunities for Irish architects globally.

TVA sends new park rules to county

There will be no more porches at Marshall County Park No. 2 and the park can stay open longer.

Those are part of the new campground rules TVA recently sent to the Marshall County Commission.

Park No. 2 is owned by TVA and the commission leases it. The county owns the property that makes up Marshall County Park No. 1, so the new rules don't affect it.

The new rules establish two kinds of campsites, seasonal and short-term.

Commissioner Bill Stricklend, whose district includes Park No. 2, said the commission will have to make changes to the county's park rules to incorporate the new TVA rules.

The park can now remain open 11 and a half months per year, up from eight months.

Campgrounds must be closed and campsites vacated for 14 consecutive days per year. Campers can be stored at the campground parking lot during this time.

The American Institute of Architects Colorado, south chapter, recognized its 2012 architectural design winners Friday night at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.

Five award winners were selected from 12 entries, and were presented by jury chairman David Tryba of Tryba Architects in Denver.

The Honor Award for Built Architecture, the highest award, was given to RTA Architects Inc. in Colorado Springs , for its Gottlieb building additions and renovations.

The merit awards in the same category went to HB&A LLC in Colorado Springs for its work with the Pueblo Fire Station #4 and to RTA Architects for its Bear Creek Elementary School addition and renovation work in Boulder.

The merit award for un-built architecture went to HB&A for its work with the North Colorado Springs Readiness Center. And the citation award for un-built architecture went to CSNA Architects for its Colorado Springs Pauling Properties project.

AIA Colorado South is one of four chapters within the AIA Colorado component. The chapter is comprised of members from 18 counties in south and southeastern Colorado and includes Colorado Springs, Alamosa, Pueblo and La Junta.

The contemporary-designed single-family homes at Indigo at Hillside range from 1,863 to 2,031 square feet. The three plans have as many as three bedrooms, 2 baths and a two-car garage.

The Twilight and Dawn plans, at 2,006 and 2,031 square feet, respectively, are shown as model homes and highlight Ryland's modern designs and flexible options.

Liz Werner, co-owner of Furniture Market, designed the interiors of Indigo's model homes.

On the one hand, Los Lobos have come a long way in 40 years. On the other hand, the band has never left the backyards and front porches of East L.A. From its roots as a traditional conjunto through its American music mixmaster phase to its current place as tradition-meets-progression godfathers, the Lobos have kept eyes, ears and hands on several muses while remaining firmly rooted at home.

In 1992, when Los Lobos released the Mitchell Froom-produced "Kiko," critics and fans alike took notice. Though there likely were a considerable number of fans who would have been happy to hear the band play "Anselma," "Don't Worry Baby" and "La Bamba" for the rest of their lives, even more were overjoyed when Los Lobos slipped the leash. With "Kiko," the band did exactly what it wanted, exactly what it had been preparing for for two decades: bring all the influences, talent, soul and power together with no compartmentalization.

The reissued and live CDs and the DVDs of "Kiko" stand as perfect examples of a band working at the height of its powers, moving from the boogie of "That Train Don't Stop Here" to the percolating groove of "Kiko and the Lavender Moon," from the tradition-based "Saint Behind the Glass" to the heartfelt "Peace" and the cantina-worthy ballad "Rio de Tenampa."

Los Lobos always defied boundaries. Twenty years down the line, the boundary obliterating "Kiko" remains vital, true and tough.

Patrick Industries Inc. is investing up to $3 million and creating up to 65 new jobs as it expands operations in Kosciusko County.

The manufacturers AIA Countertops division will broaden its product line to include new granite and quartz countertops.

Patrick Industries is buying, renovating and equipping a 142,000-square-foot factory at 203 S. Huntington Ave., Syracuse, for additional production.

Elkhart-based Patrick Industries makes and distributes building and component products for the recreational vehicle, manufactured housing and industrial markets.

AIA Countertops now employs about 175 full time in Syracuse.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. on Thursday announced it has offered Patrick Industries up to $325,000 in tax credits, based on the companys job-creation plans. The employer wont get the full amount if it doesnt fulfill its hiring projection.

The town of Syracuse approved additional property tax abatement.

Countertop division plans 65 new jobs

THE Institute of Architects of Zimbabwe (IAZ) and the Architects Council of Zimbabwe (ACZ), which are the representative and regulatory bodies for architects, respectively, wish to respond to the story entitled Row over public works contracts in the Zimbabwe Independent of August 3. The views of local architects quoted in the story are not representative of all architects since the IAZ and ACZ were not interviewed. The statements issued by these architects are merely the opinions of a few individuals. The IAZ, through the president or an appointed member agreed to by the Architects Board, issues all statements to the public.

The article is also misleading in that it created the impression that there is only one firm of architects that has the ability to design and supervise projects for public institutions.

There are 46 registered architect firms in Zimbabwe, all with the capacity to execute any given project. It is not correct that all the other 98% of architects firms dont perform and dont have the staff to supervise and monitor government projects.

The government has previously parcelled-out tenders to a number of registered architect firms for the design of the sporting facilities for the 1995 All Africa Games and prior to that Phase 2 of the Family Health Programme.

These projects were carried out very successfully. Distributing the projects was a way of building capacity in these firms, which is there still.

If the criteria for assessing a firms capacity to execute projects are merely limited to staff at their disposal, then those who lack the support of the public sector will always be sidelined as they cannot retain large staff when there is no work to be done.

Some students from NUST are failing to secure industrial attachment with local companies, as the firms do not have enough work to offer the students meaningful practical experience.

Therefore any concerns regarding the competence or conduct of an architect should be raised with the ACZ.

Comments on architects ‘misleading’

This weekend, a porch collapsed on Williams Street in Collegetown, sending landlords into a frenzy. One company even issued a warning to tenants to avoid "rhythmic vibrations" on porches. We sent our Berry Patch reporters to Collegetown over the weekend to find out the top seven things not to do on your Collegetown porch.

1) Dont stand on your porch railings and pretend to be a pterodactyl or other similar prehistoric bird. Like these long lost creatures, you might become extinct. And if that doesnt kill you, your neighbor might not appreciate your pterodactyl sounds and do it himself.

2 ) Invite a Sun sex columnist onto your porch. If anyone knows anything about rhythmic vibrations, its these people.

3) Dont treat your porch railing like the balance beam in gymnastics and pretend to be Gabby Douglas. You are not that nimble, and you are also not 16 years old. If you are going to attempt this against our warnings, ensure you are properly outfitted in a leotard.

4) Dont invite any large mammals onto your porch. Leave your alpaca at home. This applies to New Jersey governors and Sumo wrestlers as well.

5) Ensure that when you are inviting a bunch of people to do Sake bombs on your porch that they are not actual bombs.

6) Dont play the song Call Me Maybe on your porch. You are likely to shatter all the windows in your house, and likely all of the surrounding houses as well. You will definitely be calling your landlord.

7 ) Dont stand on your porch if you can avoid it. Have you seen those porches?

The Berry Patch: The Dangers of Collegetown Porches

NAPLES, Fla - Roofing companies are scrambling to complete unfinished business.

WINK News caught up with roofers at Kelly Roofing in Naples as they worked to secure materials on a home in Hawks Ridge Thursday afternoon. The workers are hoping to get all the tiles installed before Isaac hits southwest Florida.

Eddie Guevara, a project administrator with Kelly Roofing, says, "storms with high winds tend to shift a lot of roof tiles and blow off shingles. That will rip up the whole roof, sections of the roof or just move the roof more than it should move in a days time. That could easily cause a leak."

Once a roof hits a certain age, Guevara says it needs to be repaired. Tile roofs should be repaired every 20-25 years and shingle roofs should be repaired every 15-20 years.

After the storm it is recommended that you have your roof inspected to make sure all the tiles are in place.

Many roofing companies, including Kelly Roofing, will do that inspection for free.

Guevara also recommends checking the inside of your home after the storm to see if there are any stains, as stains are a sign there is a leak in your roof.
