Commercial Roofing Market to Reach $5.3 Billion in 2014 According to New Report from Principia

ATTLEBORO - A rash of deck collapses locally and nationally has prompted Building Inspector Doug Semple to warn homeowners that older decks should be checked for safety - now.

"After looking at these things, I'm scared," he said of local decks and national news reports. "There are potentially a lot of deck collapses out there."

Semple said older decks, those at least 15 years old, were usually attached to homes with nails alone and are especially at risk.

"Our concern is that we know we have a lot of these open decks out there that are 15 or 20 years old," he said. "We really want people to take a close look underneath these decks and see if they are held to the house with nails or bolts."

The use of nails to attach decks was a standard practice years ago and met the code of the time. However, nails have proven unreliable, especially on decks without roofs.

Ordinary wear and tear and exposure to the elements weakens the wood and can rust the nails, leading to collapses, Semple said.

In addition, nails are smooth and pull out easily, he said.

Semple said he and other local inspectors are encountering more and more wobbly and dangerous decks.

"It's probably one of the most common things we're seeing out there right now," he said.

Semple pointed to a deck collapse in South Attleboro about two weeks ago in which an elderly woman was injured.

Police are investigating two recent reports of a roofing scam targeting the elderly in southeast Portland.

In both incidents, reported in June, a pair of men approached homeowners and claimed to notice a problem with the roof. The men offered to fix it, asked for payment in cash and one of the men rode along with the victim to the bank to get the money.

"I just felt like I was scum, you know, just scum," said Elma Matocha, who paid the pair around $7,500 in mid-June.

She said the two men, one older and one younger, walked into the house.

"He acted like he knew us, you know, how you doing? Your roof's been fine?' But he says, I see a bubble,'" she said.

Based on the way he acted, Matocha thought he was the person who once worked on the roof of her house on SE Lincoln Street. She followed the two men upstairs into the attic.

She said the men pointed out water on the wall and floor. Some of it was on some family heirlooms stored in the attic.

Then came the sales pitch.

"They said, we have a job down the street that way and a job down the street this week,'" recalled Matocha. "He said, this isn't a very big job, so we can get this done.' Acting like he knew us."

Naveeni, of Dudley Road, Rowley Regis, who is also a music producer, has being DJing for the past 15 years.

BINTULU: Much to the relief of the residents of 19-door Rumah Chendang Anggau longhouse near Tatau, Bintulu, they received roofing sheets worth RM36,000 donated by Hormat Pasifik Sdn Bhd, an oil palm plantation company operating nearby.

Plantation managers Laing Ngau and Charles Sibat handed over the roofing sheets to longhouse chief Tuai Rh Chendang Anggau during a simple ceremony held recently.

Stephen Sani, the companys project manager said the donation was one of many corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes undertaken by members of the KTS Group of Companies.

It also upholds the We care, We grow, spirit of the slogan of KTS 50th anniversary celebration.

The residents here have been very cooperative to the company and the act is a token of our appreciation.

Ample job opportunities will be made available once the palm oil mill nearby commences operation by 2014.

Local residents will then be able to sell their fresh fruit bunches without incurring additional transportation costs, Stephen added.

Whether you're enjoying a warm summer day cooled by a ceiling fan, snuggled under a comfy sweater enjoying a chilled breeze, or dozing off to the acoustics of rain landing on the roof, a screened-in porch is a sweet place to be.

"Screened-in porches are a great way to extend the seasons and enjoy the elements of nature without all of the problems associated with outdoor spaces," says Dawn Cook of Dawn Cook Interior Design in Shaker Heights. "I always treat it as an extension of the outdoors -- the whole bringing-the-outdoors-in-and-the-indoors-out concept."

But that indoor/outdoor hybrid element can also complicate decorating decisions. To offer some examples of homeowners who have pulled it off, James T. Porches featured in Farmer's book aren't all screened-in. Some are open-air. But being tastefully decorated and dripping with the homeowners' individuality is what they have in common.

In a telephone interview from his home in Kathleen, Ga., Farmer says porches have become more sophisticated.

"My clients pay as much attention to how they decorate their porches as they do the rest of their house," he says. That doesn't necessarily mean break-the-budget furniture and accessories.

"Porches are edited and are utilitarian for what they [the homeowners] need it for," Farmer says. "And that idea transcends budgets," he adds.

Some photos in "Porch Living" are tight shots of decorating details, such as beautiful tablecloths, fruit in pretty bowls, petite plants and more.

Fitch Ratings has revised its price decks for both U.S. oil and natural gas, reflecting various market factors and underlying conditions.

Fitch has lowered its long-term (mid-cycle) Henry Hub natural gas price to $4.50/thousand cubic feet (mcf) from $5.00/mcf. This drop reflects limited catalysts for higher U.S. natural gas usage and the ongoing strength of shale-based liquids projects in North America, which has resulted in the treatment of associated gas as a by-product in a number of plays, allowing producers to tolerate lower all-in natural gas prices.

Fitch lowered 2012 HH base case prices to $2.75/mcf to reflect weak pricing seen YTD. While recent heat wave conditions have pushed electric generation usage up sharply this summer, this has been balanced against a very mild winter, which has led to average pricing of just $2.43/mcf as of the end of July.

Fitch has raised its 2012 base case West Texas Intermediate (WTI) to $92.50/barrel to reflect near-term market factors, and maintained its long-term base case price at $65/barrel.

Fitch's price deck intends to reflect a more conservative view of future price levels for modeling and rating purposes and for evaluating future commodity price expectations from a bondholder perspective. Fitch's price deck will often remain below current spot and future markets as a result. The price deck also reflects just supply/demand fundamentals, particularly the long-term price deck, with the recognition that near-term events can result in significant deviations from fundamental levels.
