A partnership involving Quad-City Realtors, home builders, skilled trades contractors and high school students has produced the 13th student-built home in northwest Davenport, replete with hardwood and ceramic flooring, granite countertops and a 10 1/2-foot-long kitchen pantry.

The 2,800-square-foot home at 6214 Fillmore St. was built over the past year by 13 students from the three Davenport public high schools and North Scott High School under the direction of Kirk Hakanson, an employee of Scott Community College.

Two classes of students worked on the house for a total of about six hours a day. Students were involved in every aspect of construction, and did the framing, roofing, siding, trim work and laying of the wood floor essentially by themselves, said Jon Yocum, the Quad-City Area Realtor Association representative.

The students worked alongside skilled tradespeople for the plumbing, electrical, insulation, ceramic, carpet-laying, drywall, masonry, painting and concrete work. That is either because the work must be performed by someone with a license or because it is extremely tricky for beginners to get right working entirely on their own, Yocum said.

For North Scott students Alex Grunder and Garth Larson, framing was the most memorable part of the build.

You could see the whole house just stand up within just a couple of weeks, Larson said.

He took the class because, beginning with his freshman year, he heard what an incredible experience it would be and how the knowledge he gained would help him in the future. So far, that has proven to be true, he said.

He hopes to build his own house someday and will begin classes in June at Scott/Western Illinois University in pursuit of a degree in mechanical engineering.

Everybody should sign up, he said of the class. Its a blast.

Grunder will put his knowledge into practice immediately by working this summer for a home builder. He took the class because he wanted to learn more about how the business works and how contractors get everything organized, he said.

FAST COMPANY: What is it about surfaces that gets you excited? Isnt that superficial of you?

KEN TRINDER: No, theres a creative element to both these concepts, making new proprietary types of countertops, and developing and handcrafting surfboards. They start as a hands-on process. There are things I do on the countertop side that tie back directly to things Ive learned making surfboards. Surfboards are made of resins, and the countertops have resins in them as well, so theres a tie-in there as far as understanding how those things work and react with each other. I know it sounds like those two things would be the most unrelated things in the world, but it all goes back to the same thing, the chemistry.

EOS has three countertop types, each of which is innovative in its own way.

We had the idea of making a new type of countertop that was polyester acrylic, and we took it upon ourselves to see if we could make it an inch-and-an-eighth thick all the way through. The typical thickness out there is a half-inch. But in the traditional half-inch thickness, you might have four or five hours of labor taking that half-inch sheet, cutting strips off it, and gluing up underneath it to have the illusion of it being an inch-and-a-half thick.

So you offer something thats thicker and more durable, but you save on labor costs.

In our industry, people always thought something with more product would make it more expensive. But it works out that we can do it in a way thats price competitive, when you factor in the labor savings.

For a lot of people, disco never died. For others, it came back to life in the past 15 years, as James Murphy's DFA label and production team, Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's essential history Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, and the rediscovery of eclectic dance savant Arthur Russell combined to help free the pioneering sounds of long-shuttered New York City spaces like the Loft and the Paradise Garage from Comiskey-demolition backlash. And yet when Donna Summer, the queen of disco, died last week at age 63 after suffering from cancer, some obituaries failed to mention perhaps her most influential hit: 1977's "I Feel Love."

The record is about to be set straight. The Library of Congress has announced it has chosen "I Feel Love" and several other classics for induction into its National Recording Registry. Other recordings being honored include Sugarhill Gang's 1979 "Rapper's Delight," Prince and the Revolution's 1984 Purple Rain soundtrack, Parliament's 1975 Mothership Connection, Vince Guaraldi Trio's 1970 A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, Dolly Parton's autobiographical 1971 "Coat of Many Colors," Love's 1967 Forever Changes, Booker T. & the M.G.'s 1962 "Green Onions," and the Grateful Dead's 1977 show at Cornell University's Barton Hall (which you don't have to be a Deadhead to love, for what it's worth). Two Bo Diddley songs also made the cut, along with various pre-rock recordings.

With its completely synthetic backing, "I Feel Love" paved the way for house, techno, and the electronic pop currently dominating the charts. Producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Beloitte used four cabinets of Moog synthesizers to achieve the instrumental arrangement, at a time when using a synth was, compared with today's software-based environments, almost a live performance. The Library of Congress points out that Brian Eno once said the track would "change the sound of club music for the next 15 years." He might have been understating things.

As you can see from the names above, Summer's smash has some illustrious competition in the latest round of National Recording Registry inductees, from the hit that helped popularize rap to a classic Stax soul instrumental. The sale, which started 12 years ago to help match grants the city received for the renovation of the Historic Depot, now raises money used to pay the annual escrow payment on Depot Park, as well as any upkeep or maintenance at the depot.

This year looks like it could be a potentially great year, Main Street Russellville Executive Director Betsy McGuire said. Its amazing how much stuff weve had donated.

Passers-by of the depot may notice workers preparing for the sale outside, and are likely to see an array of televisions, furniture, office accessories, books, old doors and window frames, art, bikes, clothes, and just about anything else.

This year, it is literally amazing, McGuire said. We have some really nice furnishings, some nice decorative items and some really wonderful clothes.

Francis Parker, who has coordinated Rummage since its first sale, said she anticipates having more items than last year.

The furniture end is really full, and we still lack several deliveries, Parker said. We have so many books, were having to bring them inside.

Last year, the sale brought in a little more than $5,000, according to McGuire. McGuire said the most the sale has made was about $10,000, with the least falling just short of $5,000.

The cost of the annual escrow payment on Depot Park is $4,888, McGuire said.

While those working the sale wont accept donations after 10 a.m. today, Parker said those wishing to donate beforehand are welcome to bring just about anything but clothes, due to an over-abundance of such items.

We aren't actually remodeling the dogs, of course. Although if that were possible ...

I bring them up because at first they were an obstacle to the project. (Note to self: "Obstacle" would be a good dog name.) Boarding two Lab-sized mutts for weeks and weeks would have been prohibitively costly. Instead, family friends (who have a dog of their own) came to the rescue. They have dog-sat.

The mutts return to our house for weekend furloughs, during which the poor creatures wonder, "What has happened to the place?" and, more important, "Where has the best dog-nap couch gone?" and "What time is supper?"

Kanye and Kim Kardashian have some weird chemistry when its actually time to pose for pics together.

The made-for-the-paparazzi couple hit up the red carpet together for the first time earlier today for the screening of Cruel Summer, a short film written, produced and directed by Kanye. The film premiered at Cannes as a 7 screen experience, described as a fusion of short film and art installation, and features a few of Kanyes good friends like comedian Aziz Ansari and Kid Cudi as well as Lebanese actress Razane Jammal and Palestinian actor Ali Suliman.

Kim stepped out in a Balmain dress from the 2012 Resort collection paired with black Guiseppe Zanotti for Balmain boots while Kanye opted for a cream colored suit jacket, jeans and loafers.
