Work delayed on Eggners Ferry Bridge repair

    - May 15, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

MARSHALL-TRIGG COUNTY LINE, KY (KFVS) -

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials say there's been a bit of a delay in repairs to the partially collapsed Eggners Ferry Bridge.

One crane was loaded Saturday night. They are working to load the second crane Sunday morning, according to a spokesman for the transportation cabinet.

The cranes and replacement span are not likely to move on Sunday, according to the spokesman. He says the best estimate is that they would like be transported sometime Monday.

By the time the second crane can be loaded today there would not be sufficient daylight to make the trip by water to the bridge site.

The bridge closed in January after a cargo ship slammed into it and knocked a single 322 ft. span into Kentucky Lake.

Engineers said Saturday morning it may now be late Saturday or Sunday before they can load the replacement span and the equipment required to lift it onto a barge for a 30-mile river trip from Eddyville to Eggner's Ferry Bridge.

The trip is delayed because crews were having trouble building a ramp from shore to get two huge cranes on board.

Once the steel truss arrives, weather will determine how quickly it can be lifted into place. Deck construction could take as long as ten days to two weeks.

KTC officials say the concrete will need to cure for several more days before traffic will be allowed to cross the bridge

Nigeria: Disgruntled PDP Elements Behind Cabinet Shake-Up Rumour – Presidency

    - May 15, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The rumour making the rounds of an impending cabinet reshuffle by President Goodluck Jonathan is the machination of a powerful political force within the ruling Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) working for the removal of some key ministers in the government, the Presidency alleged yesterday.

The political bloc, comprising members of the PDP, working in tandem with some opposition elements were said to have targeted ministers considered as key players and who are responsible for the successes recorded in the economic structure of the Jonathan administration.

The ministers are those of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed; Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke; Niger-Delta, Elder Godsday Peter Orubebe; Information, Labaran Maku; Labour, Emeka Wogu; Interior, Abba Moro; as well as the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike and his Agriculture counterpart, Akinwunmi Adesina.

A highly placed Presidency source told LEADERSHIP on anonymity, that the political group were particular about Mohammed and Allison-Madueke "who they see as major threats to their 2015 political ambition and are mobilising public anger against them with a view to discrediting an emerging political base of President Jonathan, who pessimists had thought lacked the ability to survive the ongoing political warfare against him."

The source said, "Beside being seen as the most loyal crop of cabinet members in the Jonathan government, the opposition group, which has some converts within the ruling party also believe that the ministers are partly responsible for the visible progress and successes so far recorded by President Jonathan.

"The prime target of this group of powerful opposition is the FCT minister. Given that he hails from the north, these political enemies are worried that despite entreaties not to return to the Jonathan's government, Bala has remained loyal and committed to the political ideals of his principal, the president.

"Since moving that historic doctrine of necessity, they have not forgiving him. If you know what they have done to his image because of his continued closeness to Mr. President, you will weep for him. Our people believed that having served as FCT minister, the second most important ministry in Nigeria, next to petroleum, for two years, he should have resigned and returned to his political roots, which brought him to the senate in the first place, before he joined the PDP and the Jonathan government".

He added that some people are specifically afraid that Bala's stabilisation and growing influence in the North, if not checked, could turn out to be another strong weapon in the hands of the president to actualise his second term ambition if he eventually makes up his mind to run in 215.

The game plan of labelling the FCT minister as being "anti-north," according to the source, "was adopted by those who wanted him out of the Jonathan government. Hence, they choose to use various means to tag the petroleum minister and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mr Austin Oniwon as being corrupt.

"This was their (opposition) game plans, but one of them who also works for us revealed their secret. And in order not to create an environment of disloyalty and a possible feeling of dissent among the ministers, Oga (President) decided to come out clear that embarking on a cabinet reshuffle was not his immediate priority.

WEST WINDSOR: Maher accuses mayor of playing party politics

    - May 15, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

WEST WINDSOR Councilman Bryan Maher criticized Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh for the way he has handled the controversial Mercer County Community College solar farm project after a public forum on the Windsor Plaza development on Wednesday.

Questioning the extent of the mayors knowledge of the project, Mr. Maher accused Mayor Hsueh of siding with the Mercer County Democrats and pushing this agenda quietly for their purposes.

He said the first time hed heard of the project was April 4. I brought this up months ago and read about it last fall so either hes an absentee mayor, he doesnt know whats going on in the town or he lied, said Mr. Maher. Theres no gray area and he needs to be called out on that.

Mayor Hseuh, who was not at the forum, said he heard about the project more than a year ago, but had no idea of the projects scale, engineering and other details until a month ago.

But Mr. Maher said he thinks partisanship has been guiding the mayors actions. We have a Democratic mayor in this Democratic county who didnt say anything about this (so as) not to upset the upper Democrats he aspires to be one day, he told the crowd.

The mayor expressed shock at Mr. Mahers partisan attitude and said the issue should be solved professionally not through political attacks.

Thats not what we should be doing at West Windsor theres no Democratic or Republican way of dealing with issues, he said. I would hope he would go to council and ask questions, not go behind it. I hope Mr. Maher looks into the facts before he says anything.

Mayor Hsueh said he has been consulting with lawyers and Township Attorney Michael Herbert who have told him the same thing the college does not have to grant a public hearing because the school is an educational institution operating on county land.

The $40 million solar farm, which would plant a 9.5 megawatt ground-mounted solar array on 67 acres of West Windsor farm land, has already been approved by the county and state and has already been under review by the Department of Environmental Protection.

HEART ISLAND, N.Y. - -It's the heart of the 1000 Islands and it holds a love story. Boldt Castle on Heart Island opened it's doors for its 35th season and has already welcomed hundreds of visitors this weekend.

Colorado resident George Acree said, "We just decided to come and see the castle because of its message more or less. A love story."

Canadian resident Gage Stephens said, "Everybody talked about coming to Boldt Castle and said you have to come see it, so here we are."

This historic 122-room Castle was started by George Boldt in the 1900's, a labor of love for his wife Louise. When she passed suddenly construction stopped. But for the past 73 years the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority has worked diligently to restore the castle to its original intended beauty.

Boldt Facilities Director Shane Sanford said, "Thousand Island Bridge Authority has invested about 34 million dollars over the past 35 years here at the Boldt Facilities here and the Boldt Castle and the Boldt Yacht House and have attracted about six million visitors over that period of time."

And with each new season at Boldt Castle comes new additions and this year on Heart Island is no different. A new state of the art theater was added on the second floor and the old theater area will be converted back into the Butler's Pantry in 2013. Visitors say they enjoy exploring and learning about the new and old at each turn.

Acree said, "You read and hear about castles, but to actually be in one see one, touching walking, it's pretty overwhelming."
