Day trips. Hiking with bandanas. What you should keep in mind as Washingtons outdoors spaces reopen – Seattle Times

    - May 2, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

After weeks of getting creative to stave off cabin fever backyard grass skiing, living room campouts, retaining wall rappels, neighborhood trip reports Washingtons outdoor adventurers finally have some good news. On May 5, some state parks and public lands will reopen for day use, with a list expected by the end of this week, Gov. Jay Inslee announced at a Monday news conference, where he also signaled that hunting, fishing and golf can resume.

Outdoor recreation is one of the best things people can do to promote their health, both mental and physical, during this time of isolation, Inslee said.

But as hikers lace up their boots and mountain bikers pump up their tires, this early experiment with resuming everyday activities in the midst of a pandemic will look and feel different. For starters, outdoor events and camping remain prohibited. Dont expect to roast smores over a fire at Deception Pass State Park or compete in a trail running race at Moran State Park for the foreseeable future.

There were also no new announcements Monday about national forests and national parks, where most of Washingtons most prized outdoor destinations are located.

Catherine Caruso, a spokesperson for the Pacific Northwest unit of the U.S. Forest Service, said, We dont have a timeline we can announce today but indicated that Inslees announcement would allow the federal agency, which oversees most of the hiking terrain in the Cascades and some in the Olympics, to begin putting in place its own plans to reopen trailheads that have been closed since March 27. (Gifford Pinchot National Forest closed so-called developed sites on April 9.)

Washingtons three national parks also closed shortly after Inslees March 23 stay-at-home order. Decisions on a phased resumption of operations will be made on a park-by-park basis and regularly monitored, said North Cascades National Park chief of visitor services Denise Shultz. Olympic National Park spokesperson Penny Wagner referred The Seattle Times to President Trumps Opening Up America Again plan but offered no specifics. Mount Rainier National Park officials did not immediately return a request for comment.

On the county level,We have been working through phased-in reopening scenarios for some King County Parks locations, likely starting with natural lands and regional trails, said Logan Harris, a spokesperson for King County Parks, which include popular trail destinations like Rattlesnake Mountain and parts of the Issaquah Alps.

How should hikers, bikers and equestrians behave on the public lands that will soon open? Largely the way we were asked to behave in March, when public health measures like physical distancing were brand new. On Monday, Inslee encouraged Washingtonians to stick with day trips with household members and not to meet up with hiking buddies.

Be prepared has never been more important: Pack extra hand soap, hand sanitizer and toilet paper. Dont expect bathroom facilities to be open. Skip the aprs-hike brewery stop and bring your own food and drink to avoid visiting businesses far from home. That recommendation is a bitter pill for local economies, but another public health necessity to minimize the risk of viral transmission between communities. The face mask or at least a bandana that can be pulled over your face may become the 11th essential on the trail.

The Washington Trails Association (WTA) was out in the lead during the confusing days of late March when state residents struggled to parse how they should apply Inslees Stay Home, Stay Healthy order to their everyday lives. With the impending reopenings, they are ready to lift the lockdown rule of thumb that if you have to drive to the trailhead, its too far.

The real challenge is going to be showing that we can use our trails safely and responsibly, said WTA director Jill Simmons.

Overcrowding on trails, once just an annoyance, is now a public health liability that could lead to public land access being shut down again.

The good news, Simmons said, is that we now have a much better understanding of the importance of social distancing and what that looks like than we did early on. Expect to see downhill hikers stepping aside when its safe to do so without trampling fragile vegetation to allow uphill hikers to pass at a 6-foot distance and for hikers to pull bandanas over their faces when passing. Above all, Simmons said, communication is key. Now more than ever, verbally signal to another party how you intend to pass on the trail.

Im hoping folks will get the hang of what its like to hike with social distance, she said. Its going to be a tough balance.

WTA hopes its extensive trail library will encourage hikers to get creative beyond the usual, crowded suspects.

If youre walking down the road quite a ways to get to a trailhead, thats probably an indication the trail is too full, Simmons said, adding that personally, she is anxious to return to Dosewallips State Park and eventually the Olympic National Forest, to get lost in mossy dales far from the crowd.

Crowding at the few remaining outdoor recreation options drove Bellingham-based professional mountain biker and Olympic medalist Jill Kintner indoors to train. She curtailed her riding in nearby Galbraith Mountain Bike Park, which did not close, to off-hour sessions solo or with her husband.

Opening more land access to keep people apart will be great, she said. It was a bit of zoo, [everyone] flocked to the very few things that were open.

Kintner has been sticking to easy trails. Ive dialed it back because some of my favorite trails are pretty aggressive and technical, but its not worth having to go to the hospital, she said. I dont mind keeping it chill for a while.

That same mindset will apply at higher elevations for Tom Vogl, CEO of The Mountaineers, who was eager to make a ski ascent of Mount Baker this summer but is prepared for that goal to be off the table. Under normal conditions, if the weather and overall conditions were good, you might take some additional risks to meet a given objective, he said. This is one of the times where stepping back our level of risk is more prudent.

The Mountaineers had to cancel all in-person classes and trips and restrict use of its well-equipped Seattle Program Center. The 114-year-old outing club continues to adjust its offerings holding knot tying seminars via videoconference and will continue to incorporate safety measures for instance, individual tents instead of share tents on overnight trips when in-person activities finally return.

Were going to try and be as creative as we can while maintaining our focus on safety, Vogl said. Were all going to have to be patient with our land managers and government officials.

Similar adjustments will be necessary for trail work, which takes advantage of spring, summer and fall to maintain existing trails and build new ones.

The Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance is already a month behind on planned work to build new trails at Port Gamble Heritage Park, Tiger Mountain State Forest, Raging River State Park, and No. 2 Canyon outside Wenatchee. The statewide organization hopes to restart these volunteer efforts next month with smaller crews of one to two people.

How we introduce that back in a sustainable and safe way has taken some thought, executive director Yvonne Kraus said. Engaging volunteers for work parties is no doubt going to look different than how it has been in the past, from group size to shared food to carpooling.

Among the most controversial outdoor-activity restrictions lifted Monday was a statewide ban on recreational hunting and fishing, which prompted Let Us Fish rallies across the state, including one Sunday on Lake Union.

Twisp resident Carmen Vanbianchi, a board member of the Washington chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, was more patient. Its been disappointing for people to have those activities restricted, she said. Everyone has to make sacrifices in this weird time.

Top Drivers Who Lost Their Lives Fighting For The Daytona 500 Title – Essentially Sports

    - May 2, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Since opening in 1959, Daytona International Speedway has been the home of the Daytona 500, the most esteemed race in NASCAR. Many drivers have tried to take on the Daytona 500 title and succumbed to grave accidents their efforts.

Most recently Ryan Newman was involved in a very serious accident while fighting for the Daytona 500 win. Thankfully, he is recovering well and will be making his comeback soon. However, not everyone was this lucky.

Read More: Will Ryan Newman Be Joining The Virtual eNASCAR Grid Before His Return?

40 individuals have been lethally harmed in on-track incidents. The list includes 23 car drivers, twelve motorcyclists, three go-kart drivers, one powerboat racer, and one track laborer. Here is a list of drivers who lost their lives fighting for the Daytona 500 winner title.

The most unfortunate demise may have been that of Dale Earnhardt, who was killed on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500 on February 18, 2001. Going into the last turn, the back of Earnhardts Chevrolet Monte Carlo reached Sterling Marlins front guard, which caused Earnhardt to quickly slide towards the cover before shooting up the banking. Earnhardt died on the spot. However, he wasnt announced dead until his landing in Halifax Medical Center, caused by a Basilar Skull Fracture.

Dale was succeeded by his son Dale Earnhardt Jr who won the race twice during his career.

He was the 1993 NASCAR Goodys Dash Series champion and was a contender for the 94 Winston Cup. He was killed in an accident during the practice of the 1994 Daytona 500. While making a mock qualifying run he spun entering the turn two. His car lifted up in the air and slammed heavily into the outside retaining wall roof first at over 175 mph. He succumbed to his injuries right on the track.

He was a famous American NASCAR driver who won 18 races and 20 poles over his 18-year career. He was a famed TV personality with multiple TV appearances in movies and as a commentator for CBS, TBS, and TNN in the years until his death. he had an accident during the first practice session for the 1994 Daytona 500. A surprise mechanical failure caused him to lose control of his Chevrolet on the tracks high-banked fourth turn. The car smashed into the track apron, and then up the steep bank before crashing into the wall. He didnt survive the incident.

The track was conceptualized in 1959 by NASCAR founder William Bill France, Sr. The idea was to have a racing track which would be an improvement over the Daytona Beach Road Course. The tracks legendary banking design allows for higher speeds and give fans a superior view of the track action.

[Video] When Ayrton Senna saved the life of Erik Comas at Spa | GRR – Goodwood Road and Racing

    - May 2, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Aged just 34 at the time, the Williams driver was, then as he is now, considered to be one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time, winning 41 races and three championships over a 10-year Grand Prix career. But hand in hand with his success went humility, and no-one knows that to be truer than Erik Comas, whose life Senna undoubtedly saved during qualifying for the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix.

When the Frenchman crashed into the barriers at Spa-Francorchamps Blanchimont corner at close to 200mph, he was rendered unconscious, his foot pinning down the accelerator and an explosion becoming ever more likely as the seconds ticked on. As other drivers wound their way around the wreck, Senna stopped his car on the live circuit, ran to the wreckage and searched frantically for Comass Ligier engine cut-off switch, before supporting his opponents head until the medical crew arrived.

Comas later credited Senna with likely saving his life, but in a cruel twist of fate was unable to do the same when he came upon Sennas crash less than two years later. In an interview years after the accident, Comas said: When I just arrived it looked like a bomb had exploded in Tamburello. There was a very strange atmosphere in that area and without knowing the details at that moment, I knew that something very bad had happened.

A certain paralysis hit me because I was standing next to the man who had saved me from death two years earlier. At that moment there was nothing I could do and I felt terrible. I had the feeling that I came too late, I am not a doctor but I knew that he was in much worse shape than me in Belgium two years earlier.

In Sennas honour, todays Elevenses features that incredibly valiant moment that he put his own life on the line for another, reminding us that his humanity shone far stronger than his desire to succeed.

Welcome to Goodwood Elevenses, a mid-morning helping of motoring-related amusement to help break up your day. Watch the last video: How to lap the fast, blind and scary old Circuit Zandvoort

Colby Cosh: Water, fire, and water trouble comes in threes for Fort McMurray – National Post

    - May 2, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

I decided to take a break from reading about the foreseeable health disaster for which nobody prepared ideally, in order to read about a different foreseeable disaster: the river floods now threatening low-lying areas of Fort McMurray. After much of the Alberta tarsands city was burned in a forest fire in 2016, there was a pell-mell effort to rebuild, and although some residents took insurance buyouts and said farewell, those who stayed felt strongly that, if possible, Fort Mac should be put back the way it was.

But at that time, everyone still remembered that the historic Waterways district and other parts of downtown had been flooded in 2013, and were likely to continue to be deluged periodically because of ice jams that form upstream from the city in the spring. The fire for even fire obeys the law of gravity, more or less had attacked the same low-lying areas with particular ferocity. At the time of the fire, Fort McMurrays own bylaws put strict floodproofing conditions on new building construction in the Waterways area. And the province was about to pass tough rules excluding new structures on known floodplains from disaster relief.

There was enormous pressure on city officials to act, so they came up with a plan. They would suspend their own floodproofing requirements for Waterways, let everyone rebuild there according to the less onerous pre-2013 standards, and construct a hypothetical demountable flood wall essentially a levee that could be assembled with a few hours notice and left in storage for most of the year to protect the neighbourhood. The provincial government quickly agreed to keep the areas eligibility for disaster relief in place while the levee was built.

Some folks didnt like this idea much. They included hydrologists, who denounced the mad dash back to the floodplain. Reinsurers werent especially happy either. In the trade publication Canadian Underwriter, one of them griped: Waterways residents are being allowed to rebuild in a flood plain to inadequate risk prevention standards. It is an emotional and financial decision for residents who do not wish to relocate and cannot afford the expense of building to a more robust code. As no one is willing to pay the additional cost government, the insurance industry or individuals the community is set up to repeat the mistakes of the past.

I am just willing to roll the dice and build my house back there as it was

In the end, the sentiment that won the day was the one expressed by a Fort Mac local: I am just willing to roll the dice and build my house back there as it was, and I cant see there being any issues.

Eventually, reader, an issue appeared: demountable flood barriers werent at all practical. Consulting engineers ended up discovering that, in the Waterways setting, Standalone walls would require ice force resistance systems, causing them to be quite large, with steel support beams going down to bedrock. And the demountable panels would be too large, as well, due to oversized sheeting, weighing about 500 kilograms per sheet. The city went ahead building a less ambitious series of berms and retaining walls, piece by piece, intentionally spreading the work out over a period of years. New funding for the latest berm in the series arrived in November. Not sure how far they got with it.

CE Pro Podcast #4: Home Networks Go Mission-Critical | Building an Award-Winning Tech Support Team – CEPro

    - May 2, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

This week on the CE Pro Podcast, we talk to a pair of executives from leading custom-channel providers about some industry segments that have become especially pressing during the coronavirus lockdown.

First up on the CE Pro Podcast, Hagai Feiner, founder and CEO of Access Networks, addresses numerous aspects of selling, designing and installing home networks.

The pandemic has put a significant strain on the publics home bandwidth as people work from home and in many cases share their network with children who are educating from home and meanwhile the entire family is now spending much more time streaming music, movies and more.

Last week on the podcast we heard from FulTech Solutions Dan Fulmer about how his integration company has handled this increased demand from customers. This week Feiner, whose company provides enterprise-grade solutions for the industry, continues the topic thread.

Stuck at home in his apartment, however, Feiner notes that residences of all sizes now have a greater need for reliable networks, no matter which manufacturers are providing them.

All brands are experiencing this, Feiner notes. Because even if you have lets say an Access Networks system deployed in your house, just like I do, this area when all this started and the lockdown in California [where Feiner lives] started last month I even felt the challenge with my network because this is an apartment where we moved into, its a rental.

We put the network in that we brought from our old house, didnt really think about it, theres no wiring here so theres one access point downstairs and guess what, all my conferences are up here in my master bedroom and video doesnt transmit that well because of the issues in this apartment.

There are plenty of lessons to be learned, no matter the size of the clienteles house, as Feiner explains during the segment.

Meanwhile, CE pros are always more confident selling and installing systems when they know they can lean on their suppliers support staff.

Every year, CE Pro doles out its Quest for Quality Awards to manufacturers and distributors in various categories of support services. Our awards nominees come straight from the horses mouths, so to speak, as they are compiled from votes and testimonials by our readers (integrators).

Audio manufacturer AudioControl has managed to cultivate a technical support team thats been singled out by readers in multiple years of the awards program, which is now in its 10th year. In the second segment of the CE Pro Podcast, CEO Alex Camara details some of the ways his company has created such a service-first environment.

Its particularly in focus now as dealers adjust to the evolving business climate that the coronavirus has dealt society while integrators continue to operate as essential workers.

Whats helped for us, I think, is having a manufacturing base here in the United States up here in Seattle, Camara says.

Were able to react really quickly to what appear to be urgent needs. A lot of projects have been delayed I think everyones seeing that but theres a lot of urgent work thats appearing, whether its somebody cant get a product from somebody else, whether its a failure in a home office system or in a commercial facility so were really responding and building, literally day by day, to the needs.
