From mouldy showers to junk drawers: how to clean the 10 things annoying you most – The Guardian

    - April 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

You have never spent so much time at home, and once you have exhausted Netflix, your eyes may alight on all the filth youve never noticed before. Have you ever dusted your ceiling? Of course you havent. But now is the time to do it, because you dont have anything better to do. Here are all the other jobs you were previously too busy to worry about, but which will provide a sense of achievement or at least a little exercise.

Easily the worst job in the house, but a gleaming oven will become one of your lifes new pleasures. Prevention is better than cure, says Gemma Bray, the creator of the Organised Mum Method. I swear by oven liners, which will catch everything at the bottom of the oven. You take it out and quickly rinse it under the tap. But before you can start using an oven liner you have to start off with a clean oven.

You can go for a heavy-duty oven cleaner, but many people are put off by the harsh chemicals these contain. Other people swear by using bicarbonate of soda in a paste, which I have never really had much success with, especially if you are battling a really grimy oven.

Bray takes out racks and leaves them to soak in a bath of very hot, soapy water. Washing-up liquid is one of the best things for tackling grease. Slowly, little and often, work on the bottom of the oven even in 15-minute slots. Wait until after you have used the oven, and it has cooled but is still warm. Use hot, soapy water and a cloth, and every time you use the oven go in there, go at it and eventually youll start to see a difference.

To clean a microwave, slice up a lemon and put it in a bowl of water. Put it in for five minutes at full power, says Lynsey Crombie, AKA the Queen of Clean and author of The Easy Life: Quick Ways to Clean and Manage Your Home All Year Round. Leave to cool for a while you dont want a face full of scalding steam then wipe with a cloth.

Take everything out and put it in a cool bag, says Aggie MacKenzie, the TV cleaning expert who runs AggiesTips.com. Have a sink full of hot, soapy water ready and wash all the shelves. Wipe the inside of the fridge with water and a microfibre cloth you dont really want to be introducing much in the way of products. The drip tray at the back can get clogged up, maybe with bits of labels from jars. Get a cotton bud, put some kitchen roll round it and dab in and out of the hole to keep it free-flowing.

If you can manage, pull the fridge out and clean behind it. Thats when you discover youve got mice, or youve had mice youll see droppings, says MacKenzie. Gently dust or vacuum the condenser coils at the back of the fridge.

An unsightly lavatory is bothersome, but easily forgotten after every flush. Tackle it once and for all. You need to remove some of the water first so as not to dilute the cleaning product too much, says Crombie. Scoop it out with rubber-gloved hands, or plunge it down the U-bend with a toilet brush. Put some limescale-removing product down there and leave overnight. Denture tablets or soda crystals will also work. But Crombie cautions: If you put it down and someone uses the toilet within half an hour, youre not giving it an opportunity to work. The reason I dont advise bleach is it doesnt break limescale down. It will look better, but in a few days it will come back.

I use a 50/50 ratio of white vinegar and water solution in an old spray bottle, says Bray. It helps to tackle the limescale and dirt. If youve got a clogged-up showerhead check first it wont damage the surface you can sit it in a white-vinegar solution. I try to use as few chemicals as possible in the house.

For the black mould spots around the silicone, get some tissue paper and soak it in a bleach solution. Your shower curtain can probably go in the washing machine check the label as can a non-slip bathmat. They can go a bit gunky underneath, but they come out like new.

Shop-bought window cleaning products or vinegar will work on the glass. If you have UPVC frames, use a cream cleaner or a damp sponge with bicarbonate of soda on, says Crombie. For wooden, painted windows, dry dust them then clean with an orange-oil-based product, to protect the wood. Dont forget to clean the handle just use what youve been using on the frame. Vacuum your curtains, and wipe blinds.

This is the time to be ruthless. Empty it out, says MacKenzie. Give the inside of the drawer a vacuum and a wipe with a damp cloth. Then only put back the things you use. If you think: I might need that one day, no, you wont because you havent used it in the last year. I used to have a dish full of keys and I never knew what they were for. One day I just threw them away. Did I come to any grief? No. Rehome items to the places they belong.

Remove whatever it is you are storing under your bed and clean off the dust (there will be a thick layer), then vacuum underneath. Its a good time to flip your mattress if it needs it, says Crombie. Give it a vacuum. If you have a steam cleaner, use this too. Hold the steamer 30cm away from the mattress people go too close and get the mattress wet and then they cant go to bed. Leave the window open so the mattress can dry. If you have stains on your mattress, a carpet-cleaning product should get them off.

She recommends a homemade fabric freshener: 20 teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda and 20 drops of lavender essential oil in a 500ml bottle of water. Just spritz it on. Pillows can usually be washed check the instructions.

Wallpaper, particularly if it hasraised patterns, can benefit from a vacuum. Gently go over it with a brush attachment, or with a dry microfibre cloth or paintbrush, says Crombie. If you have a flat-headed mop, use that to dry-dust your ceiling. While you are at it, use a brush (a clean paintbrush, or old makeup brush) to dust light fittings.

Although some paint is washable, Crombie says she wouldnt recommend it, but you can dry-dust. For marks, use a Magic Eraser or similar, or get a sponge and gently wipe. Dont forget doors, particularly those with dirt-attracting panels, and frames. I use warm soapy water, and dry it instantly with a clean dry microfibre cloth.

If you are spending a lot more time on the sofa, you may as well improve your environment. Give it a thorough vacuum, including in the crevices and under the seat pads. Get a damp microfibre cloth and gently rub at any stains, says MacKenzie. If you have ingrained dirt, borrow a steam cleaner. Check the labels of your cushion covers some can be washed. I wouldnt wash feathered cushion pads, but most are synthetic fibres so follow the washing instructions. Pull out the sofa and vacuum underneath. Behind it, youll see a massive layer of dust on the skirting board. Thats where a lot of dust mites are.

Finally, give your cleaning tools some attention. String mops give me the heebie-jeebies, says MacKenzie. A much better mop is a flat-headed one, with a cloth pad you take off after each time you wash your floor and stick in the washing machine. I wash my dustpan brush in the kitchen sink and dry it outside.

Show your vacuum cleaner some love. Many have washable filters; the brush head will probably be clogged with hair. Get a small pair of scissors and snip right down the middle [of the tightly rolled hair]. It takes a while but its terribly satisfying.

Bray uses a new dishcloth each day and saves them up until they can go in the washing machine on a hot wash. But she cautions against overdoing it. On her 100,000-strong Facebook group, a lot of them are prone to overcleaning. I always tell people just do what you need to do and dont feel you have to be cleaning all day, because otherwise it can turn into a bit of an unhealthy obsession.

Larry King Haircare Wash Cycle Shampoo Review Tried and Tested – Stylist Magazine

    - April 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

How many shampoos do you have in the shower right now? One? Well, thanks to Larry Kings new Wash Cycle collection, Ill be keeping three bottles tub-side for the foreseeable future. Heres why

I always thought that shampoo was just shampoo. Yes, some smell nicer than others, and some are packed with ingredients that will help the scalp, add gloss to dry ends or inject volume at the roots. But I honestly thought when it came to shampoo innovations, wed had our lot.

I was wrong. You see, the last time I visited my hairstylist,Larry King, he let me in on a little secret: he was about to change the way we use shampoo forever.

When you go to a salon, your hairstylist will probably use two different shampoos on you, and theyll change which ones they use every time you go in, he told me. So it makes no sense that youd use the same shampoo every time you wash your hair yourself at home.

His theory is that our shampoo-needs switch day to day. For instance, on a Sunday, we might want to completely strip back a weeks worth of pollution, grime and dry shampoo, but that level of cleanse might not be necessary on the next hair wash. Or, perhaps mid-week our hair looks as though it needs an injection of health like the hair equivalent of a green juice but then it might not need another dose until a week later. Of course, the combination of needs will change from hair type to hair type, too. Its all about finding your own wash cycle, he explains.

So it makes sense why he would call his new shampoo collection Wash Cycle, wouldnt it?

Wash Cycle is a collection of three hard-working shampoos which are suitable for every single hair type but each one has a different job. Where most haircare brands save the goodness for the conditioner step, King believes the shampoo plays a vital role in conditioning and replenishing the hair, so hes packed each one with an impressive list of ingredients.

Used in conjunction with each other, the idea is to work out which combination best suits your hair and lifestyle perhaps alternating between the detoxifying City Life shampoo and the nourishing Good Life shampoo will work best for your hair type, or maybe youll need all three formulas on a rotation to match your ever-changing needs.

Theres also a pretty incredible conditioner aptly named Liquid Hairbrush, and I cant quite get over how well it works more on that later.

Add to that, theyre all housed in sustainable glass bottles and theyre completely reusable: you can buy refills in aluminium tubes to top them up.

This is the man that brought my curly hair back from the brink Id trust him with my life but I knew to believe the hype, Id have to give this new shampoo system a go on my own hair. Heres my honest thoughts:

I know, you know: pollution and hard water are generally bad news for hair and scalp health, so once a week, its worth using a shampoo that will peel back these layers of grime. This shampoo contains vitamin E and zinc PCA to nurture the scalp as well as centella asiatica, which has antibacterial qualities. Its also excellent if youre a little heavy-handed with the dry shampoo. Plus, it smells like pine trees, and it left my scalp feeling as clean as one of those rugs on those weird carpet cleaning videos doing the rounds on Facebook right now.

Use it: On Sundays, to reset for the week.

This one is all about nourishing, hydrating and strengthening the hair and so it feels a little richer than the others, and contains biotin for fibre strength and vitamin B5 for a moisture injection. Its my favourite for days when my curls feel a little dry or crispy, but I avoid using it more than once a week, as it can make my hair feel too healthy. Yes, thats a thing.

Use it: Midweek, when hair needs perking up.

Rather than relying on texture spray or styling cream to add grip, volume and shine, this shampoo does it all for you. Hair doesnt feel as slippery and silky-clean as it might usually, but this helps any styling you do afterwards stay put. Ive really noticed a massive difference to the lifespan of my curls after using it, but its also brilliant for adding a little grittiness pre-straightening or tonging.

Use it: Friday morning, ready for the weekend.

I dont know how to put into words just how epic this product is, but I shall try.

Unlike other conditioners, theres none of that heavy butteriness, so it never weighs hair down or makes it go prematurely greasy. I guess Id liken it to a hair glaze that coats every strand in shine, but its real talent is that it draws out every last knot. Its crazy. My hair is matted 99% of the time, but I simply rinse this through it, and all the knots have gone no scalp pulling, no tears and no pain required. Ive not had to brush my hair in weeks. It is bloody MIRACULOUS.

Use it: With every hair wash.

So, Im officially a convert. I usually stick to nourishing shampoo formulas given that curly hair is so prone to dryness, but then I often find I over moisturise, and my curls go fluffy and limp. By changing my shampoo on the regular, Ive been able to keep my hair at that perfect middle ground between under-nourished and over-nourished, and quite frankly, my curls are thriving. Plus, given I use so much mousse and curl cream, a weekly detox shampoo is just what I need to stop my scalp from becoming clogged and itchy, and for that, I am truly thankful.

At around 40 a pop, theyre not cheap, especially when you consider the need to fork out for multiple formulas at once (although of course, itll take much longer for you to finish off each one). What I will say is that you only need the teeniest amount to build up a really satisfying lather and to properly cleanse the hair and scalp, so theyll likely last you ages. But if you like to invest in truly brilliant hair care, you cant go wrong with this range, I swear especially that Liquid Hairbrush.

17 Disinfecting and Cleaning Supplies You Can Buy Online Right Now – Prevention.com

    - April 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    TatommGetty Images

Around this time of year, most of us would normally be gathering supplies to get ready for spring cleaning. But of course, with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) upon us, disinfecting cell phones, kitchen faucets, and other household surfaces is paramount. As you continue to stock up on products, know that not all cleaning materials work the same way.

"We should all have cleaning supplies that are antiviral and antibacterial," says Dr. Elizabeth Mullans, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist based in Houston. Disinfectant wipes and sprays both count, she adds.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has come out with a list of products that while not tested on COVID-19 specifically, have been found to be effective disinfectants against similar viruses. Clorox, Lysol, and Purell are three brands that showed up several times.

We scoured the internet to find products from these brands and other disinfectants that are still available. We'll continue to monitor and update this list as often as possible. Meantime, for more about how to kill COVID-19 germs in your home, go here.

    1Clorox Splash-Less Liquid Bleach

The ultimate clean is no-frills bleach. It kills bacteria, fungi, and viruses on surfaces and also whitens clothes. Make sure to follow directions on the label here.

Dr. Mullans suggests mixing 1/3 to 1 cup of bleach with a gallon of water and then let it sit on the surface for at least five minutes before rinsing off.

    2Dial Antibacterial Hand Soap

Rinsing off your hands doesn't do a damn thing. You need to add some soap to that H20 and lather up real good. Wash for at least 20 seconds before rinsing off, and you're good to go. Be sure to wash your hands as often as possible, but especially when you arrive at your destination. The thought of touching your face with subway-pole hands should give you the shivers.

    3Clorox Ultra Clean Toilet Tablets

Drop one of these Clorox tablets in the toilet and watch it do the dirty work for you every time you flush. It deodorizes the bowl andprevents stains from sticking.

    4Seventh Generation Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner

    $3.29

From kitchen tiles to the bathroom sink, this foaming bathroom cleaner disinfects and deodorizes it all. It also has a nice smell, which comes from the essential oil and botanical blend. Just wet the surface you want to clean and leave the product on for about 10 minutes to ensure the area is disinfected.

5Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Grime Fighter Spray

    $3.48

Get rid of tough grime and germs with this disinfectant bathroom cleanser. Made for surfaces in the shower or bathtub where deep down grime usually harbors, this spray makes it easy to disinfect all bathroom surfaces. Just spray, wipe with a sponge, and then rinse off the product with water.

    6Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge

    $5.22

From pots and pans to kitchen surfaces, these heavy-duty sponges are just the thing you need to keep your whole home clean. This six-pack has a soft side, while the other packs all the power with the ability to remove stuck-on-there food from pans or dried-up spills on countertops. Amazingly, these can be thrown in the dishwasher to be sanitized, so you can use 'em again and again.

    7Soft Scrub Cleanser with Bleach

    $3.99

This all-purpose cleaner can be used nearly everywhere in your home for a squeaky clean and sanitized space. This formula works well on surfaces ranging fromkitchen counters, to inside sinks, to bathroom tiles, and tubs. With bleach added in, it also removes annoying surface stains while claiming tokill 99.9% of germs.

8Dawn Ultra Antibacterial Hand and Dish Soap

This 2-in-1 hand and dish soap is soft on hands but won't slack while you wash pots and pans. It cuts through slippery grease, has antibacterial ingredients to remove germs as you wash your hands, and since soap is hard to come by, we love that with this formula, a little goes a long way. Oh, and it smells like apples.

9Clorox ToiletWand Disposable Toilet Cleaning System

Toilet cleaning has finally become more convenient with a ready-to-use toilet wand. It disinfects, and deodorizes, getting rid of germs, rust and the like.Completely hygienic, once you're done cleaning, just throw the disposable head in the trash. Voila.

Need some more refills? We got you. Just go here.

10Wet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes Travel Pack

    $1.49

This travel pack makes sanitizing easy, wherever you go. The packaging is super thin, so you can take it with you as you get essentials at the grocery store. It has a secure seal to ensures it's closed, locking in all that antibacterial moisture for future use.

    11Baby Bum Hand Sanitizer

    $3.99

Did someone say hand sani? Yes, this one IS in stock (for now). Although it's made for little ones, this Baby Bum sprayclaims to kill 99.9 percent of germs, and what else do you really need, anyway? Just spritz a few sprays on your hands and rub.

    12Clorox Scentiva Wipes

Sanitizing wipes are one of the easiest and most convenientways to get your home clean and yourself, Dr. Mullins says. These wipes from Clorox is saidtokill more than 99.99% of germs on surfaces, and have a nice tropical scent too.

    13Equate Hydrogen Peroxide

Common household products, like hydrogen peroxide work to disinfect surfaces as long as it's used inconcentrations from 3 to 6 percent. Use it on anything from fabric to spot treatments.

    14Bissell Antibacterial 2-in-1 Carpet Cleaner

    $19.99

You just don't know what's lurking down there in your carpets. Thisanti-bacterial formula effectively cleans and deodorizes carpets to give them a deep clean that does away with bacteria for good. I mean, just think about all the crumbs, dog hair, and hand contact your carpet has had over the days...months....years!

15Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Lilac Hand Soap

    $3.99

While antibacterial soap is good to use, according to the FDA, really any soap is good soap. At this time, there isn't enough scientific evidence to prove that washing with an antibacterial soap is any better than your run-of-the-mill cleanser.

"Plain oldsoapis good enough," Dr. Mullans says. "Most important thing is to wash front and back of hands and in between fingers for at least 20 seconds before rinsing it off."

    16Method Antibac Bathroom Cleaner

You love thesehand soaps, and now you can get that Method-quality clean with an extra kick, thanks to its antibacterial line. Method uses essential oils in its blend, so not only does it kick germs to the curb, but it also leaves a nice scent after use.

    17Method Toilet Cleaner

Cleaning the toilet manually? This option by Method has a thin nozzle at the top to accurately aim product into the toilet bowl before you give it a scrub, wiping off a promised99.9% of germs. Although it sanitizes your toilet, it's also plant-based and its fragrance stems from natural essential oils.

Who is Boris Johnson’s stand-in, Dominic Raab? – Politico

    - April 12, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

According to half a dozen current and former colleagues of the man now tasked with steering Britain's coronavirus strategy, the 46-year-old former lawyer will be a forensic stand-in for the prime minister, albeit one who sometimes lacks charm.

Raab, who backed Johnson for prime minister after a short-lived bid for the top job himself, is loved by Brexiteers, though has relatively limited experience at the top of government.

"He made the most cogent case for Brexit of those currently in Cabinet, that is what annoys his enemies," according to a former Cabinet minister who has worked with Raab, who, like most of those interviewed for this piece spoke on condition of anonymity.

Both current and former colleagues point to Raab's attention to detail.

"The one thing he is very good at is detail and [the coronavirus] sort of operation requires the detail to be right. So he is the ideal person to grab hold of it now that the direction has been set by the prime minister and deliver," according to another senior government figure.

A wooden media performer, Raab also causes some to worry that what they see as his political naivet might mean he struggles to sell the government's plan to the public.

"He is unflinching in his arguments," the former Cabinet minister said. "Interestingly for a foreign secretary, he is sometimes quite undiplomatic."

Most pressing in Raab's in-tray is the question of how to end the national lockdown crippling the U.K.'s economy.

As foreign secretary, Raab will be familiar with the discussions. He has been part of the 9:15 a.m. daily "war cabinet" meetings throughout the crisis, which he began chairing on Monday after the prime minister was first taken to hospital on Sunday night.

"He is not someone who will have been sitting at the back of the room. He will have been taking notes, listening intently and wanting to play his part," according to one of those familiar with the war cabinet's operation.

"He is very forensic, very clever, he has a lawyer's mind and will take every argument apart piece by piece," said the former Cabinet minister who has worked closely with Raab.

The former minister believes the foreign secretary's more prominent role could lead to a more skeptical approach to the scientific research and decision-making as ministers mull how to get people back to work, although the ex-minister acknowledged a final decision was unlikely to be imminent and would ultimately be taken by the prime minister.

"If you want someone to grind the truth out of conflicting data, Dominic is your man," they said.

But while Raab will take a microscope to the evidence, few believe that he will want to make any major decisions if the prime minister continues to recover.

"It will be a big call for someone to pull us out of lockdown without the PM making that decision, the senior government figure said.

While Raab has "a lot of self-confidence," he will be very aware that it is "uncharted territory in terms of proper Cabinet decisions," according to one former departmental colleague.

"He will be looking to [Cabinet Secretary Mark] Sedwill for the constitutional appropriateness of this. He will play by the rules and be sensitive," the former departmental aide added.

"Dom doesnt care about headlines, his focus will be on doing the right thing for the country," saidJames Starkie, another former colleague who ran communications for Raab's leadership bid last year. "He had a tremendous work ethic and hell instill that drive in those around him, the country is in safe hands with him."

While Raab is well-known in Conservative ranks having worked as Brexiteer David Davis' chief of staff before becoming an MP in 2010, he is little-known beyond the Westminster bubble.

A favorability poll conducted by YouGov last week put him among the least known of those in top Cabinet posts. More thanhalf of those asked about his performance suggested they did not know who he is, and among the half of those who did, more had an unfavorable than a favorable view.

He also has relatively little experience. He only became a junior minister in May 2015, and was in Theresa May's Cabinet as Brexit secretary for just four months in 2018 before he resigned over her approach to negotiations with the European Union.

"What he isn'tis an optimistic booster in the way that Boris is," the former Cabinet minister said. "He doesn't compete with Boris at all on those terms. If that is what you want, then Raab is not your man."

But in the midst of the crisis, allies say "delivering a good story, rather than talking a good story" is more important.

"He is like the [footballer] James Milner of politics. He plays in midfield for Liverpool, worked his arse off, perhaps there are people around him who like to do a few more flicks and kicks, but you don't win titles unless you have people like James Milner, and you can't run government unless you have people like Dominic Raab," said the former colleague.

Raab also did not havethe privileged upbringing of the prime minister. He was educated at a state-run grammar school, and his Czech-born, Jewish refugee father fled the Nazis in 1938, then died when Raab was just 12 years old.Raab worked as a lawyer in the Foreign Office before entering politics in 2006.

In 2017, Raab revealed he was named on a list of Tory MPs accused of inappropriate behavior but branded the allegations false.

Raab's main support base in the Conservative Party comes from the most hardline ofBrexiteers in the party.

Since December's election, however, many of his political opponents have either left parliament or been voted out, making Brexit a less contentious issue than in previous eras.

Raab is unlikely to have to make any major Brexit decisions while deputizing for Johnson, with the next significant decision over whether to extend the transition period due in June. "The signs are hopefully the PM will be back soon, there are no big Brexit decisions to take, Frosty [chief U.K. negotiator David Frost] knows what he has to do," said a former colleague.

Beyond Brexit, Raab is no stranger to controversy. In 2012, he was a contributor to Britannia Unchained, a book that made the case for free markets and deregulation, which attracted headlines for suggestingBritish workers are "among the worst idlers in the world."

He also courted controversy for suggesting people who use food banks typically do so not because of poverty but because they have an occasional cashflow problem.

A second former colleague said the examples suggested a "political naivet," and a lack of understanding of the "politician's way of saying something."

Were Raab to be in charge of the coronavirus response in the longer term, the same former colleague does have concerns.

"The criticism that I have of him is that he is very black and white. It can be quite hard to nudge him in certain areas," the former official said. "He always did his own thing [as a minister]. You have to be flexible, you have to remain dynamic, you have to remain open, and I think he might struggle with that."

    Emilio Casalicchio contributed reporting.

Boris warning: Conservatives will find strong opposition now Marxist nutters are out – Express.co.uk

    - April 12, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mr Osborne praised new Labour leader Sir Keir Starmers shadow cabinet. Taking to Twitter, the former chancellor said: Keir Starmers reshuffle is impressive - the Marxist nutters are out; moderate left are in.

When this crisis is eventually over, and politics is resumed, the Tories are going to find that the five years when there was no opposition and no alternative has come to an abrupt end.

It comes as Sir Keir unveiled his shadow cabinet after he was announced as Jeremy Corbyns replacement earlier this month.

Many MPs from Mr Corbyn's team have been kept on, but those from the centre and right of the party have also been given promotions.

Sir Keir said: "This is a new team that will take the Labour Party forward in a new era.

"Under my leadership, the Labour Party will be utterly focused on working in the national interest, rebuilding people's trust in our party and winning the next election."

Sir Keir included his former leadership rivals in the shadow cabinet.

Rebecca Long-Bailey has been made shadow education secretary and Lisa Nandy is shadow foreign secretary.

He added: "The Labour Party is an incredible and powerful force for good.

"Together with those that went before us we've changed the lives of millions of people for the better.

We created the NHS. We created the welfare state. We passed equalities legislation, the Race Relations Act, we set up the Open University. We built hospitals and schools, established Sure Start and played our part in bringing about peace in Northern Ireland.

"But we've just lost four elections in a row. We're failing in our historic purpose.

"Be in no doubt I understand the scale of the task, the gravity of the position that we're in.

"We've got a mountain to climb. But we will climb it, and I will do my utmost to reconnect us across the country, to re-engage with our communities and voters, to establish a coalition across our towns and our cities and our regions with all creeds and communities to speak for the whole of the country.

"Where that requires change, we will change. Where that requires us to rethink, we will rethink.

EDITORIAL: Bold proposals made by panel trying to resolve the bases issue : The Asahi Shimbun – Asahi Shimbun

    - April 12, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

An expert panel set up by the Okinawa prefectural government has called for scrapping what it calls an almost impractical plan to relocate a U.S. Marine Corps air base in the city of Ginowan some 40 kilometers northeast to a coastal area in Henoko next to the U.S. Camp Schwab.

The panel, consisting of university professors and former bureaucrats, urged the Japanese and U.S. governments to hold talks with the prefectural administration to find an alternative plan to achieve the original goal of eliminating the danger posed to local communities by the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

The panel, tasked with proposing ideas to reduce the U.S. military presence in the southernmost island prefecture, presented its proposals to Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki on March 26.

The seven-member panel, headed by former senior defense bureaucrat Kyoji Yanagisawa, has been discussing possible options since May 2019. Yanagisawa served in various senior posts at the Defense Agency (now the Defense Ministry) before being appointed as assistant chief Cabinet secretary in charge of security and crisis management.

In addition to pointing out that the government's contentious plan to build a new Futenma replacement facility in Henoko in Okinawa's northern city of Nago is no longer workable, the panel said the U.S. Marine Corps based in the prefecture should be decentralized and deployed in smaller units to the Japanese mainland and overseas locations in response to changes in the regional security environment and the U.S. military's strategy review.

It also proposed a vision for the future of Okinawa as "the hub of a network of regional cooperation."

Despite a series of elections in which local voters made their opposition to the base relocation plan patently clear, the Abe administration has continued to forge ahead with land reclamation work to build the new base.

As the panel rightly argued, the discovery of extremely soft ground under the seabed in parts of the reclamation area has made the relocation plan "technically and financially difficult to complete."

The central government should sincerely recognize this grim reality and give serious consideration to the panel's proposal to set up a new expert council to discuss the issue involving representatives of the Japanese and U.S. governments, as well as Okinawa Prefecture.

With regard to the regional security landscape, the panel pays special attention to China's significantly enhanced missile capabilities.

That means the concentration of U.S. forces in Okinawa, which is geographically close to China, creates a major vulnerability in the defense of Japan, according to the panel.

The experts contend that it would make more strategic sense to redeploy the U.S. Marine Corps based in the prefecture in smaller units to Self-Defense Forces bases in the mainland of Japan, along with wide areas in the Asia-Pacific region.

This idea, of course, entails the colossal political challenge of winning the understanding and support of the local communities around the bases to which U.S. troops would be transferred.

The panel stressed the need to promote a fresh national debate on how the burden of hosting U.S. forces should be shared.

Even if the U.S. military presence is crucial for Japan's national security, it is debatable whether the nation should be allowed to maintain the status quo--where Okinawa is forced to shoulder an unfairly large portion of the burden.

The central government is not the only actor which should make a serious response to the panel's proposal. Local governments and residents in the mainland should not remain uninterested in the issue, either.

There is no doubt that China's military buildup and naval expansion has undermined stability in the region. It is clear, however, that this security challenge cannot be effectively met only through bolstering Japan's military capabilities and deterrence.

A national security strategy can only be dependable when it is underpinned by an effective system to ease tensions and build mutual trust.

Okinawa, which once thrived as an intermediate base of trade with China and Southeast Asia, should serve as the hub of regional cooperation that supports the system, the panel argues. As specific measures to realize this vision, the experts proposed regular meetings among researchers in the region. It also called forestablishing a new research institute that would serve as the center of such efforts.

In a nutshell, the panel has proposed to redefine the strategic position of Okinawa to transform it from the front line of confrontation between the United States and China and between Japan and China into a bridge between Japan and the rest of Asia.

This vision should lead to a serious national debate over the future of Okinawa.

Will I Need to Hire a Plumber When Remodeling My Kitchen or Bathroom? – RealtyBizNews: Real Estate News – RealtyBizNews

    - April 12, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Home renovation projects are on the rise. In fact, about 90 percent of homeowners plan to renovate at least one room in their homes.

While those renovations will look different for every house, most homeowners choose to focus their attention on their bathrooms and kitchens.

If youre like most of them, youre ready to start tackling the project on your own, but that doesnt mean you should. Instead, youll want to hire a plumber to oversee the project. Heres why.

    Your Project Might Need Permits

Believe it or not, most home remodeling projects require permits issued by the county or city government. This ensures that the project is up to current building codes and maintains modern safety features.

If you handle the project on your own, youll have to apply for the permits yourself. This is time-consuming and confusing if youve never applied for permits before.

When you work with a professional plumber, theyll be able to either help you apply for the permit or take care of the task for you.

Remember, they know what information the county or city needs to determine if they can issue a permit. This will save you time and frustration so you can get your project started quickly.

    Plumbers Will Save You Money

When you install new fixtures on your own or mess with the pipes in your walls, theres always the risk that something wont get done properly. For most homeowners, this increases the likelihood of leaks and water damage throughout their homes.

Worse, most of those leaks and damage can be hard to detect until it starts to cause serious problems with the rest of the house. Youll have to pay to get the damage repaired and could end up having to redo portions of your renovation.

When you hire a plumber at the beginning of your project, you wont have to worry about costly mistakes derailing your budget or causing damage to your home. Theyll take care of all plumbing work correctly the first time.

    They Can Spot Issues Quickly

Issues pop up throughout bathroom and kitchen remodels all the time. However, if youre not familiar with the intricacies of your homes plumbing system, its easy to miss those issues entirely.

Experienced plumbers can tell when something is wrong long before it has a chance to damage your house. Even better, theyll be able to fix those issues quickly so you wont have to deal with your project taking longer than it should.

If you try to handle plumbing renovations on your own, you may miss those minor issues entirely. Even if everything else goes according to plan, those minor issues can cause serious damage to your home if left unrepaired.

    Most Homes Need Pipes Moved

The configuration of your homes pipes and plumbing is the way it is because of the fixtures you currently have. When you change those fixtures out, the configuration may not work the way you need it to.

This can make it almost impossible to install your new fixtures and give your bathroom or kitchen the look youre dreaming of.

When you work with an experienced plumbing remodeling contractor, theyll be able to move your pipes and install your new fixtures quickly and easily.

    Installing Fixtures Correctly Is Hard

Even a simple showerhead installation can quickly turn into a difficult project if youve never done it before. The more complex the fixtures are, the harder it is to install them.

Worse, you often need specialized tools to make sure that the fixtures get installed correctly and wont start leaking after just a few uses.

Experienced plumbers have all the right tools already to make sure the fixtures get installed correctly. When they oversee the process, youll know that your fixtures will be ready to use as soon as the renovations are over.

    Plumbers Stand By Their Work

When you hire bathroom or kitchen plumbers, youre hiring their expertise and get to benefit from their knowledge of proper plumbing techniques. They stand by the work they do whether its a complete bathroom renovation or just fixing a leaking toilet.

If their work doesnt fix issues completely or causes new leaks in your home, theyll make the necessary repairs free of charge.

If you do the same work and end up having serious plumbing issues in your home because of the renovations you made, youre out both time and money. Youll need to hire someone to fix the damage and may end up needing to replace the fixtures you installed in the first place.

Hiring a plumber may cost money upfront, but it can save you hundreds in the long-run.

What to Look for When You Hire a Plumber

If youre trying to find a plumber to help you with an upcoming renovation, look for one thats local to your area and schedule a consultation. Theyll be able to come to your home and provide you with a written estimate that details how much their services will cost and what theyll do to bring your vision to life.

Shop around and get quotes from several plumbing contractors before you make your decision. You may also find it helpful to ask for references before you agree to work with them.

Reputable plumbers always have a few clients who are happy to discuss their experiences with you. Follow up with those references and choose the plumber that offers you the best balance between price and quality workmanship.

Yes, You Really Do Need a Plumber for Your Remodel

When you hire a plumber to help with your bathroom or kitchen remodel, youll be able to get the project done more quickly and with fewer serious issues. Do your research and find a plumber thats worked on similar projects in the past.

This way, youll know that your renovation or remodel will get done quickly and properly.

Here’s where every major character ended up on the series finale of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ – Insider – INSIDER

    - April 12, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The season six finale of Pop TV's "Schitt's Creek" premiered on Tuesday, bringing the masterfully-written comedy series to a close.

In the sixth season, the Schitt's Creek community is as tight-knit and quirky as ever. David Rose (Daniel Levy) prepares to marry his fianc (and Rose Apothecary business partner) Patrick Brewer (Noah Reid), while his sister Alexis Rose (Annie Murphy) establishes herself as the town's burgeoning publicist.

Their parents, meanwhile, both throw themselves into their work as Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) franchises the Rosebud Motel and Moira Rose (Catherine O'Hara) chases on-screen opportunities.

While the finale serves as an emotional goodbye to the beloved town's residents, it also becomes apparent that a switch has flipped within the Rose family, who manages to go from being comically unrelatable to completely lovable.

Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis are no longer adjusting to their stripped-down lifestyle; by the end, they've all discovered their independent identities in "Schitt's Creek."

Here's where all the major characters end up after the series finale.
