    - March 23, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Architects design structures such as houses, apartment complexes, shopping centers, office buildings, and factories. In addition to considering their physical appearance, they also make sure these structures will be functional, safe, economical, and suit the needs of the people who will use them.

The majority of the time, architects work in an office. There, they meet withclients, draftplans, work on cost estimates, file permit applications with municipal building departments, and help clients set up agreements with contractors.Architectsalso have to visit construction sites to check the progress of projects and make sure contractors are building them according to their plans.

In most states, continuing education is required to maintain licensure. To find out what the requirements are where you plan to work, use the Licensed Occupations Tool from CareerOneStop

Is HVAC Air Duct Cleaning Really Necessary? – The Spruce

    - March 23, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

A popular HVAC "maintenance" item that tends to get a lot of attention is duct cleaning. It seems like a logical maintenance activity, but cleaning the air ducts in your homes HVAC system may not be as good an idea as it intuitively seems. Let's explore some of the issues.

Unlike dryer duct cleaning which should be regularly checked and cleaned, no independent objective organization recommends HVAC duct cleaning as an essential part of routine HVAC system maintenance.

In fact, the Environmental Protection Agencystatesthe EPA does not recommend that air ducts be cleaned except on an as-needed basis because of the continuing uncertainty about the benefits of duct cleaning under most circumstances.

It also states,Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems. Neither do studies conclusively demonstrate that particle (e.g., dust) levels in homes increase because of dirty air ducts. This is because much of the dirt in air ducts adheres to duct surfaces and does not necessarily enter the living space.

Duct cleaning isn't necessarily a bad idea, but the fact is that it's not necessary in most cases. When properly performed, duct cleaning can be useful in limited situations, such as if the ducts are filthy or infested with mice or other vermin. If you see evidence of significant visible mold growth in the ducts or on the mechanical components of the HVAC system that come in contact with air. that might be cause for cleaning. But cleaning normally dusty ducts provides no real value.

Frightening before and after duct photos may make great discount coupon photos but chances are rare that your ducts are in bad shape. If your ducts are seriously filthy enough to require it to be cleaned, then you should clean the entire HVAC system (more on that later), not just the ducts themselves.

Please understand that duct cleaning uses specialized tools to agitate and dislodge dirt in the ducts to make the dirt and other contaminants increasingly loose and airborne before they are vacuumed out. Sometimes the ducts are cut for tool access and needs to be carefully resealed. Then a powerful vacuum system is used to remove the loosened dirt and contaminants. If this is not done properly you can do more harm than good.

For example, if the vacuum hose/containment system is not sealed tightly and is exhausting contaminants to the outside, or if a HEPA filtration system is not used in an interior vacuum system, you can wind up releasing dirt and contaminants into your homes interior. As part of the duct cleaning process, your ducts may have service holes cut into it for tool or vacuum hose access that may not be properly sealed after use. Or, HVAC system components could be taken apart and damaged or not reinstalled properly, and so on.

Start by selecting and using a qualified contractor. Duct and HVAC system cleaning that is performed by someone who is trained and certified by the National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA)has the best chance of being done safely.

According to NADCA, the major trade association for contractors doing air duct/HVAC system cleaning, its members need to have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff and they are responsible to clean and restore a customers HVAC system accordance with the associations standards and guidelines.

Of course, NADCA certification is no guarantee of a problem-free experience, but it does at least improve your chances.

Part of the confusion surrounding duct cleaning services is that duct cleaning is often included as a part of an overall HVAC system cleaning. As a matter of fact, because the only time cleaning your ducts is required is when they are contaminated, it follows that if you need to clean the ducts, then you need to clean the entire HVAC system that comes in contact with the air moving through the ducts. That is the philosophy taken by NADCA.

NADCA recommends duct cleaning as part of an overall HVAC system cleaning that includes cleaning and replacing the air filter, cleaning grilles and diffusers, checking drain pans and drain lines for proper drainage, checking the heat exchanger and cooling coils, grills, furnace air plenum, blower motor, etc. They provide a useful checklist for residential consumers that explains their recommended process in more detail.

According to NADCA the following items should be covered in a HVAC cleaning service:

Be prepared to pay around $500 to $1,000 for a professional duct/HVAC system cleaning service. It could be more or less depending on the location, size of your home, and scope of what is cleaned. It will usually take two technicians 3 to 5 hours to clean the ducts and the HVAC system.

Problems emerge when duct cleaning is not performed properly. And not being performed properly often results from hiring someone who promises to give you a cheap $50 whole house special or makes a sales pitch based on broad generalized claims on the health benefits of duct cleaning. Some may even falsely claim to be certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which the EPA does not provide, or they may say that the EPA recommends duct cleaning, which it again does not recommend.

Be aware of what is referred to as blow-and-go salesmen who pose as contractors often found in mail-pack coupons. They usually accompany an offer to assess or clean your homes ducts for a very cheap price, say $49.95 or even less. As they often work on commission, they will try high-pressure sales techniques to sell you on expensive add-on services (mold testing, etc) or other service upgrades. They may try to charge for duct restoration, branch duct cleaning, etc. Some may even falsely claim they found mold in your ducts. Complaints abound about some unscrupulous blow-and-go companies using air fragrances, false mold tests showing positive results, handheld dust-buster vacuums, simple drills with brushes, etc.

The allure of a low price can be attractive, but do the math before you give in to temptation. Would two truly qualified service technicians with a truck and proper equipment service your ducts and HVAC system for 4 hours in exchange for $50? Unlikely.

Duct cleaning is often an emotional sell. You want good air quality for you and your family, so cleaning the ducts in your home seems to make sense. Some marketing photos of dirty ducts can look pretty scary. But the reality is that ducts only needs to be cleaned in rare cases when there is serious contamination. In those cases, the entire HVAC system should be cleaned, not just the ducts.

Duct cleaning is easy to do incorrectly, and that is where the risk lies. Hiring the wrong contractor can do more harm than good. When properly performed by a qualified technician, HVAC system cleaning, including duct cleaning, has not been shown to be detrimental. Again, though, thats if it is done correctly and by a certified technician with the right equipment and training.

Interior designers make interior spaces functional, safe, and beautiful by determining space requirements and selecting decorative items, such as colors, lighting, and materials. They read blueprints and must be aware of building codes and inspection regulations, as well as universal accessibility standards.

Interior designers typically do the following:

Interior designers work closely with architects, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and construction laborers and helpers to determine how interior spaces will function, look, and be furnished. Interior designers read blueprints and must be aware of building codes and inspection regulations.

Although some sketches or drawings may be freehand, most interior designers use computer-aided design (CAD) software for the majority of their drawings. Throughout the design process, interior designers often use building information modeling (BIM) software to create three-dimensional visualizations that include construction elements such as walls or roofs.

Many designers specialize in particular types of buildings, such as homes, hospitals, or hotels; specific rooms, such as bathrooms or kitchens; or a specific style. Some designers work for home-furnishings stores, providing design services to help customers choose materials and furnishings.

Some interior designers produce designs, plans, and drawings for construction and installation. These may include construction and demolition plans, electrical layouts, and plans needed for building permits. Interior designers may draft the preliminary design into documents that could be as simple as sketches, or as inclusive as construction documents with schedules and attachments.

The following are examples of types of interior designers:

Corporate designers create interior designs for professional workplaces from small office settings to large-scale corporations within high-rise buildings. They focus on creating spaces that are efficient, functional, and safe for employees. They may incorporate design elements that reflect a company's brand in their designs.

Healthcare designers use the evidence-based design process in designing and renovating healthcare centers, clinics, doctors' offices, hospitals, and residential care facilities. They specialize in making design decisions based on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients, residents, and the facility.

Kitchen and bath designers specialize in kitchens and bathrooms and have expert knowledge of the variety of cabinets, fixtures, appliances, plumbing, and electrical solutions for these rooms.

Sustainable designers use strategies to improve energy and water efficiencies and indoor air quality, and they specify environmentally preferable products, such as bamboo and cork for floors. They may obtain certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building Council. Such certification indicates expertise in designing buildings and spaces with sustainable practices in mind.

Universal designers renovate spaces in order to make them more accessible. Often, these designs are used to renovate spaces for elderly people and people with special needs; however, universal designs can benefit anyone. For example, an entranceway without steps may be necessary for someone in a wheelchair, but it is also helpful for someone pushing a baby stroller.

Interior designers hold about 66,500 jobs. The largest employers of interior designers are as follows:

Most interior designers work in offices, but technology has changed the way many designers work. For example, rather than using drafting tables, interior designers now use complex software to create two-dimensional or three-dimensional images.

Interior designers also travel to clients' design sites.

Interior designers may need to adjust their workday to suit their clients' schedules and deadlines, meeting with clients during evening and weekend hours when necessary.

Get the education you need: Find schools for Interior Designers near you!

Interior designers usually need a bachelor's degree with a focus on interior design or interior architecture.

A bachelor's degree is usually required in order to become an interior designer, as are classes in interior design, drawing, and computer-aided design (CAD). A bachelor's degree in any field is acceptable, and interior design programs are available at the associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree levels.

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits about 350 postsecondary colleges, universities, and independent institutes that have programs in art and design. The Council for Interior Design Accreditation accredits more than 180 professional-level (bachelor's or master's degrees) interior design programs.

The National Kitchen & Bath Association accredits kitchen and bath design specialty programs (certificate, associate's degree, and bachelor's degree levels) in more than 40 colleges and universities.

Applicants may be required to submit sketches and other examples of their artistic ability for admission to interior design programs.

Licensure requirements vary by state. In some states, only licensed designers may do interior design work. In other states, both licensed and unlicensed designers may do such work; however, only licensed designers may use the title "interior designer." In still other states, both licensed and unlicensed designers may call themselves interior designers and do interior design work.

In states where laws restrict the use of the title "interior designer," only candidates who pass their state-approved exam, most commonly the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam, may call themselves registered interior designers. Qualifications for eligibility to take the NCIDQ exam include at least a bachelor's degree in interior design and 2 years of work experience.

California requires a different exam, administered by the California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC). Qualifications for eligibility to take the CCIDC exam include a combination of education and experience.

Voluntary certification in an interior design specialty, such as environmental design, allows designers to demonstrate expertise in a particular area of the occupation. Interior designers often specialize to distinguish the type of design work they do and to promote their expertise. Certifications usually are available through professional and trade associations and are independent from the NCIDQ licensing examination.

Artistic ability. Interior designers use their sense of style to develop designs that are aesthetically pleasing.

Creativity. Interior designers need to be imaginative in selecting furnishings and fabrics and in creating spaces that serve the client's needs and fit the client's lifestyle.

Detail oriented. Interior designers need to be precise in measuring interior spaces and creating drawings, so that their drawings can be used by other workers such as engineers or other designers.

Interpersonal skills. Interior designers need to be able to communicate effectively with clients and others. Much of their time is spent soliciting new clients and new work and collaborating with other designers, engineers, and general building contractors on ongoing projects.

Problem-solving skills. Interior designers must address challenges, such as construction delays and the high cost or sudden unavailability of certain materials, while keeping the project on time and within budget.

Visualization. Interior designers need a strong sense of proportion and visual awareness in order to understand how pieces of a design will fit together to create the intended interior environment.

The median annual wage for interior designers is $49,810. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $26,260, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $91,230.

The median annual wages for interior designers in the top industries in which they work are as follows:

Interior designers may need to adjust their workday to suit their clients' schedules and deadlines, meeting with clients during evening and weekend hours when necessary.

Employment of interior designers is projected to grow 5 percent over the next ten years, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Designers will be needed to respond to consumer expectations that the interiors of structures meet certain conditions, such as being environmentally friendly and more easily accessible.

Although only about 5 percent of interior designers are directly employed in the construction industry, many interior designers are heavily dependent on that industry to generate new work projects for them.

In addition to demand created by new construction, demand for interior designers will also arise from the need to remodel and renovate existing homes, commercial buildings, and other facilities, such as hospitals, hotels, and schools. For example, interior designers will be needed to help accommodate the future living needs of an aging population, especially for those people who choose to stay in their homes as they age.

Job prospects should be better in high-income areas, because wealthy clients are more likely than others to engage in remodeling and renovating their spaces. Keeping up to date with the newest design tools, such as three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) software, also will improve one's job prospects.

Architects plan and design houses, factories, office buildings, and other structures.

Art directors are responsible for the visual style and images in magazines, newspapers, product packaging, and movie and television productions. They create the overall design of a project and direct others who develop artwork and layouts.

Craft and fine artists use a variety of materials and techniques to create art for sale and exhibition. Craft artists create handmade objects, such as pottery, glassware, textiles, and other objects that are designed to be functional. Fine artists, including painters, sculptors, and illustrators, create original works of art for their aesthetic value, rather than for a functional one.

Fashion designers create original clothing, accessories, and footwear. They sketch designs, select fabrics and patterns, and give instructions on how to make the products they design.

Floral designers, also called florists, cut and arrange live, dried, and silk flowers and greenery to make decorative displays. They also help customers select flowers, containers, ribbons, and other accessories.

Graphic designers create visual concepts, using computer software or by hand, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate consumers. They develop the overall layout and production design for various applications such as advertisements, brochures, magazines, and corporate reports.

Industrial designers develop the concepts for manufactured products, such as cars, home appliances, and toys. They combine art, business, and engineering to make products that people use every day. Industrial designers consider the function, aesthetics, production costs, and usability of products when developing new product concepts.

Landscape architects design parks and the outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, businesses, private homes, and other open areas.

Many homeowners love renovating their house, particularly their bathroom. The reason maybe because of the simplicity it involves to decorate or reorganize a bathroom. Although hiring a prois recommended if you want to remodel your bathroom, it is ideal that you, the homeowner, also knows some of the pointers to properly renovate a bathroom. Keep in mind that at the end of the day, the entire remodeling activity is being done for you to meet your requirements.

Its success or failure will also depend on how effective you can communicate your needs to the local bathroom remodeling companies near you, that you hired. Hence, it is important to be aware of the process ofremodeling a bathroom so you can share your inputs to the professionals you hired appropriately. Below are some of the tips to consider.

Now that you have received some pointers on how to remodel your bathroom, getting bathroom remodeling contractors that will perform the more difficult part of the remodeling activity is your next concern. Hiring the services of bathroom contractors to renovate your bathroom is necessary as the work may require plumbing and electrical skills, which a regular homeowner like you may not have. The said skills require years of training and actual experience in order to execute the work properly. Performing the work do it yourself style without the required skills may just ruin the entire project and cost you more in the long run.

Below are some of the factors you need to consider before hiring anyone.

The installation of a shower is also one of the major tasks involved in a bathroom remodel that a contractor will have to do for you.

Knowing which type of shower to choose will not only make the installation easier but will also ensure that you will find your shower advantageous. Since different types of shower offer different benefits, it is ideal to know more about these various types before hiring local shower installation companies near you. This way, you can determine which shower type is best for your needs and preferences.

Every shower type also has varying costs, depending on the specifications. Hence, you might want to learn more about them so that you can choose the one that best suits your budget. Due to this reason, you need to read up on different types of shower before you start making plans for the installation project.

    Different Types of Shower

Below is a short list of shower types available in the market today. Read them to know more about the options that you will be given when you hire professional shower installers to make the project a little easier for both parties.

Digital showers are often chosen due to their ease of installation and benefits. The showers temperature and pressure are controlled by a panel that is installed in the shower and powered by a power unit at a cupboard or the ceiling nearby. This means that the installation does not only involve the shower cubicle itself by a nearby spot where the power unit is installed. This is ideal for homeowners who want to ensure that the power unit of their shower is not affected by the water.

Maintenance and repair is easier since the bathroom can be used even when the power unit is being serviced. To test the power unit, the shower cubicle will be used during maintenance, though, which is quite understandable.

This is a modern type of shower since the controls are stylish and can be managed specifically to your needs. There is no bulky heater at the shower and the controls are often flat on the walls, creating a futuristic and minimalistic look.

Electric showers are quite common and are often used in homes and hotels. The heater is installed into the shower cubicle wall and draws water from the source and heats it up and supplies the showerhead. The temperature can be controlled through the unit but the water pressure is controlled by the showerhead.

This is easier to install since there are no power units that need to be installed in a separate location. This type of shower is also quite energy efficient and is often chosen because it saves a lot of energy. There is no wastage because the water is heated on demand, removing the need for a tank for the hot water that will be supplied to the shower.

Mixer showers get the water from both hot and cold sources.Homes with boilersalready installed are ideal for this type of shower to increase efficiency and comfort when using the shower. Since the water supplied to the shower is increased due to multiple water sources, the water pressure is increased.

This is ideal if you are looking for a shower option that delivers water to multiple showerheads. Since both cold and hot water can be supplied to the unit, water flow is better compared to other shower types. This makes it a better option for multiple shower heads in a single shower cubicle.

Different types of shower heads can also be used in this type of shower. Adjustable head, fixed head and handset are all compatible with this shower option.

Pressure showers are a lot like mixer showers because they draw both from hot and cold water sources. This type of shower, however, has an additional pump to boost the pressure of the water being sprayed. This is often used in homes where the water supply is not enough to provide adequate pressure to the shower.

This is ideal for users who want to experience a more relaxing shower session as well. Because pressure showers can also act as a massager due to the pressure of the water they supply, they are often used for relaxation. Multiple types of shower heads are also available in this shower type, making it a versatile option.

Eco showers are a lot like other types of showers that provide hot or cold water but these models are focused on water efficiency. Electric and mixer showers can also be eco showers if they are equipped with features that enable the users to save more water during shower sessions.

Different shower heads can also be used for this kind of shower. The temperature of water is not affected by the efficiency of water usage since the temperature can be controlled by the power unit. This makes it an ideal option if you dont want to waste water while showering but also dont want to decrease the quality of your showers.

If you dont want to experience changes in temperature on your water when showering, use a thermostatic shower. This is a type of shower that maintains the temperature of the water even when someone else is using a tap in other parts of your house. This will ensure that you wont get hurt or burned due to sudden rush of hot water when cold temperature water is used in your house while you are bathing. This is ideal for shower types that get their supply from a boiler or a mix of hot and cold water from the pipes.

An electric shower, however, does not need a thermostatic type of shower since they only get cold water from the source and heat the water up based on the users demand. It is important to note this so that you can choose the best options for your shower installation project. Knowing what should go with certain shower types will not only make your project more beneficial but will alsosave you moneyby not having the need to get additional features that you wont really use.
