Important Facts about Black Mold: Mold spores thrive in dark, damp locations when moisture is available on a routine basis. They love a moist environment that contains organic substances on which they can feed.

The Stachybotrys spores easily travel into a structure on people, pets, or just through open windows and doors. They are not very common and are present in only about 2% of the homes we perform mold testing or mold removal in. When water invades your structure from a storm, leak or other cause, mold spores will begin to multiply within 24 hours, becoming visible in a few days. This growth will cause health issues such as respiratory illness or allergic reactions in the people inside the structure. Immediate action is necessary to prevent the further spread of mold.

Mold loves to latch onto drywall and wood to obtain nourishment. It digests these substances. This will weaken these materials and could cause decay to begin at least with the wood. Mold removal will prevent this type of damage from happening and limit your familys exposure. Call us at the first sign of mold to prevent further spread or damage from occurring. Mold remediation will bring the mold back under control to where it is not a danger to your structure or to the health and safety of the occupants.

The type of mold and the amount of mold in your house can make a huge difference though. For example, if you have a toxic black mold in your house that can be a serious health issue. There are several types of green mold that can be harmful as well. Everyones immune system is different though and your toleration levels may be different. How Much Does Home Mold Remediation Cost? | Angie’s List

    - November 8, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

Companies that specialize in mold removal can often create their own, unique fee schedules, which can contribute to great service price variability between businesses. Typically, however, the extent of a mold problem and the type of remediation methods chosen can significantly influence a final bill's total.

Wiping services can allow professionals to manually remove mold from surfaces with special solutions, butfor tougher jobs, they can employ special tools, like wet and high-efficiency particulate absorption (HEPA) vacuums. The use of a HEPA vacuum can require a large monetary investment on the part of the consumer.

In cases of severe mold infestation, specialists can suggest excising effected parts of a home's structure. While completely replacing areas can cause remediation costs to soar, detaching effected sheet rock, carpet and wood from your house's structure can act as a prudent investment in the rest of your home. Discarding unsalvageable surfaces with mold on them helps stave off the spread of the fungus.

Thorough mold cleaning can require attention placed on low-traffic or typically inaccessible corners of a home like, attics, crawlspaces, basements, duct work and other areas highly susceptible to the proliferation and recolonization of mold spores.

Mold Remediation – Montana Basement Solutions

    - November 8, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

Montana Basement Solutions uses a five-step process for its mold remediation service. This five-step process ensures that the mold in your business has been completely eradicated.

Phase I Discovery and Detection:The first part of the process is finding the mold. Our experienced technicians take environmental samples and do a visual inspection of the premises. The technicians also perform a building physical, including a comprehensive biological collection protocol. Furthermore, a complete sampling method locates all toxic molds, pathogenic bacteria and fungi. We also identify the source of the water problem, which could be a roof leak, a wet basement or leaking plumbing. We also explain ventilation and the use of the ventilation fans in the bathrooms and kitchen to make sure you do not introduce moisture, which can encourage the growth of more mold. As a water mitigation specialist and a licensed contractor, we can often resolve the root source of the water concerns prior to treatment for mold. This means your problem is fixed right from the start eliminating repeat remediation concerns due to unaddressed problems.

Phase II Pre-Testing:Montana Basement Solutions uses a third party independent lab to analyze the test cultures for viability. The results are certified by the lab. If the lab finds no contamination, your home or business is certified as free from contamination. If the lab test results are positive, we can discusses a treatment and maintenance plan with you. If desired, a third party testing reference can be provided as well.

Phase III Treatment:Technicians come out to your home or business to apply our enzyme-based formulas to start mold remediation. The process is conducted only by our professionally trained technicians overseen by an experience manager or technician. All remediation treatments are optionally provided during evenings or weekends to accommodate business concerns as needed. Our products get applied to the surface walls or injected/fogged behind the walls to ensure that all mold in the contaminated area is killed and removed. The technology is also applied to air vents to treat hidden mold and bacteria issues, which could be at high enough levels to be toxic. Note that while many remediation companies claim to kill mold they are often using chemicals in your home or office. Montana Basement Solutions only uses all natural, safe, and non-toxic bio-enzyme based materials to treat mold concerns. Our carefully vetted process ensures that your home is safe for your family, pets and even plants giving you piece of mind, and a healthy home.

Phase IV Post Testing:Once the remediation has been completed, we return within 48 to 72 hours to test the treated areas. We provide the data analyses to you on a confidential basis so that you can see that all mold has been eradicated and that the treated areas are now safe.

Phase V Prevention:Our technicians educate you on our remediation program as well as prevention and maintenance plans. These plans are tailored to your home or business and help prevent future outbreaks. Several actions by you will help keep mold from recurring, including using ventilation fans, keeping the humidity in your home or workplace between 30 and 50 percent and avoiding use of carpeting in areas that get wet, especially in bathrooms. Our trained mold pros also adhere to all EPA guidelines for mold remediation and testing procedures.

We feature exclusive, organic formulas that are not toxic to pets, people, plants, clothing, furniture and carpets. The product is safe both during and after application. It is effective on drywall, framing, flooring, clothing and furniture. All enzymes used to create our enzyme based formulas are on the FDAs GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) list.

The Advantage of Using Our Formulas:Since the products we use are all natural and non-toxic, they are safe to use in homes and businesses. These non-pathogenic and non-flammable substances allow people to enter their homes and work places immediately after treatment.

How Long Does the Process Take? The remediation process usually takes less than three days, so buildings can be treated when the homeowner is on vacation or when a business is closed after hours or on a weekend.

Why Should I Choose This Process and Your Company?Per the EPAs Mold Remediation Guidelines Dead mold is still allergenic, and some dead molds are potentially toxic. Most traditional remediation processes kill the mold but do not remove the mold. Our formulas not only kill the mold, they safely consume the mold to remove it from your home. And, since there are no volatile organic compounds in the formulas, your home or business has a fresh, clean scent. Furthermore, the process is fast, allowing minimal interruption in work and disruption to your home.Using bio-enzyme based professional products saves you money because you dont always have to replace drywall, carpeting and other items that were affected by the mold.

Should I Have My Air Ducts Cleaned? | The Truth About Air …

    - November 7, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

When servicing air conditioners, we are sometimes asked, how often should you clean your air ducts? Those of you who have read our articles, know that we are a small, U.S. Veteran-Owned HVAC company and pride ourselves on giving people honest, straight answers. Cleaning air ducts is a hot topic in recent times because people are concerned for their health, and indoor air quality is an important part of that. To be perfectly honest though, the real question you need tobe asking is,should I have my air ducts cleaned at all? The answer to this depends on who you ask and there is an entire industry that has popped-up (almost overnight) that is based on air duct cleaning and indoor air quality. I will tell you that All Systems Mechanical HVACdoes not offer residential air duct cleaning for a couple of very important reasons: the most noteworthy of which is that, in our experience, if your air ducts actuallyneeda cleaning, then something biggerhas already gone wrong with your system; secondly, cleaning your air ducts isnt all that effective and can damage them. So, is AC duct cleaning necessary? The short answer is no, but to answer this question more in-depth, this article will discuss what air duct cleaning is, thepros and cons of having your air ducts cleaned, whether or not you should spend the money, and if not, what you should be doinginstead.

Indoor air pollution is a hot topic these days and like every new industry, everyone is trying to get their piece of the pie. Air duct cleaning is just one part of a broader industry aimed at increasing indoor air quality and promoting good health. Duct cleaning is a service provided by some companies who utilize vacuums, brushes and chemical cleaning compounds to scrub the inside of your air conditioning ducts and HVAC coils, including supply and return air ducts, heat exchangers and evaporator coils. The claim is that this will increase the health of you and your family by decreasing the number of contaminants in your air. If we are being completely objective, however, I think it is important to point out at this point that according to the CDC, there is no evidence that duct cleaning increases your health. More from the CDC can be found under:CDC Air Duct Cleaning.

The cost of an air duct cleaning can vary, but it ranges anywhere from around $300 to over $1000 for a full cleaning of your ductwork. Be wary of anyone who claims that they will do it for the bargain price of $75! If you are going to get your air ductscleaned, do it right. Anyone claiming that they will do it for less than $300 is either going to do a poor job, or has hidden fees. Remember the old adage: if its too good to be true, then it probably is. Be careful.

Gratuitous Rant: First, Ill be honest with youI think this is all a bunch of voodoo. If you properly replace your air conditioning filters, on the proper interval of every three months, then having your air ducts cleanedwouldnt be necessary in the first place. Second, having replaced a lot of ductwork in my day, let me tell you that if you have flex-duct, which you probably do, having your air ducts cleaned is going to tear them all up on the inside. On the inside, they are plastic about as thick as a disposable tupperware container. They are meant to maintain proper air flow over a 10-20 year lifespan, NOT to be scraped with a brush and vacuum. Weve had to replace a lot of ductwork in our day from people having their ducts cleaned. That being said, you are here because you are interested in having your air ducts cleaned, so Ill be nice from here on outbut now you know my thoughts.

But Tim, just because there is no evidence to support the claim that cleaning your air ducts improves the health of you and your family does not mean that it doesnt!

The most appealing argument that can be made is that cleaning your central air conditioning ductwork gives you peace of mind. Think about it, you have no idea what is hidden in the depths of your AC ducts so it can be comforting to know that a professional has inspected them and taken a good look inside. If you do decide to take this route, take some time to research your local contractors and only choose a reputable duct cleaner. For more tips on how to choose an HVAC contractor, take a look at: How to Choose a Contractor: 5 HVAC Tips You Must Know. Here are some possible advantages to having your AC ducts cleaned:

According to NADCA, the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, strong consideration should be given to having your air ducts cleaned if you fall into one of the following categories:

I have a problem with most of these statements which I will discuss in more detail in the next section, but of the above reasons to clean your ducts I would have to say that there isonly onethat I would take seriously: Prior to occupancy of a new home. Everything else will be addressed in our next section.

Even though there is no evidence to support the claim that duct cleaning benefits your health, there is also no evidence that it harms your health if done properly. So if you have just had your ducts cleaned, dont fret about it. It wasnt a bad investment in your health and overall it definitely helped more than it hurt.

In my opinion, you should never get to the point where a duct cleaning is necessary, and it is completely preventable. Instead, you should rely on preventative maintenance to ensure the health and welfare of you and your family. In other words, treat the causes, not the symptoms! Here are some tips to keep your air conditioning system running cleanly and efficiently:

If you follow the above foursteps, then you will never need to clean your AC ducting. But what about the conditions recommendedby the NADCA for the use of a duct cleaning company? Ill spare youmy typical, cynical rant about the role that lobbyists play in swaying such organizations, and get to the list. Lets take a look at each:

What if you just moved into a new house but the air conditioner is not due for a replacement? This is the only circumstance in which I would consider having your ducts cleaned. I would also recommend that the cleaner you choose be an HVAC contractor as well so they cancheck your ductwork for leaks.

Be Careful of Misleading Advertisements or Claims. If its too good to be true, it probably is.

If you have your heart set on the peace of mind in having your air conditioning ducts cleaned, then that is fine. Id start though by taking the preventative measures listed above in order to ensure that your problem doesnt return after theyve been cleaned. Then, Id make the following recommendations:

    TELL ME MORE ABOUT IT

Cleaning your air conditioning ducts sounds like a good idea, but to be perfectly honest it is mostly marketing and hype, in my not-so-humble opinion. I wouldnt go as far as to call it a scam, per se, but I would tell you to be careful with your money when you start askingyourself, should Ihave myair ducts cleaned? If you follow proper preventative HVAC maintenance practices, then you really shouldnt have to have your AC ducts cleaned, and if you do decide to do it, then it should only be a one-time thing. If you do decide to go through with it, thats okay, but Id recommend you follow the tips above and try not to buy into the hype too much. Seattle Air Duct Cleaning – Alpine Specialty Cleaning

    - November 7, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Air Duct Cleaning FactsFACT:

Make sure you do your research on the NADCA.org website, the Better Business Bureau and the attorney general. At Alpine we have an A+ rating with the BBB and zero consumer complaints. We are licensed and certified through NADCA. There are a lot of shady air duct cleaning companies out there with too low to be true pricing. They are in trouble with the BBB, are NOT certified with NADCA and use bait and switch tactics. Go with a company that has long standing credibility.

Air pollutants are 4 to 7 times higher INDOORS than outdoors! We spend 80-90% of our time inside, increasing the risk for allergies, asthma, breathing problems and lung damage, especially in the young and elderly.

Indoor air quality didnt become an issue until we decided we needed airtight, energy-efficient homes. Weve lowered our energy bills, but weve trapped pollutants inside our homes and offices. Whats in your air ducts? Dust, pollen, animal dander, mouse droppings, dust mites, drywall dust, insulation, fungus and bacteria. Each time the fan turns on, it forces them into your living environment for you to breathe morning, noon and night. And, if your vent covers are located on the floor, you would be surprised what finds its way into your duct system.

Weve pulled out pop bottles, cans, drywall, insulation, toys, tools, paper, food and tons of dirt, hair and lint! With all that debris plugging up your system, your furnace has to work harder than it should. In fact, 9 out of 10 maintenance calls are a direct result of dirt and dust plugging up the system!

If you price air duct cleaning from several companies, you will notice a big price difference from one company to the next. For a typical 2,000-SF home, the price might range from $60 to $600. After learning more, you will find that PRICE has a direct correlation to the DEGREE of cleaning you get.

At $39 will admit (after asking them several times) that they typically use an electric-powered shop vacuum to clean your ducts. You might wonder how a shop vacuum can remove possibly several pounds of grime?

Good question. Common sense dictates that even an extra-long hose cannot physically reach the entire length of a 20-ft. air duct. And a small, low-powered hose will not suck up large debris. No wonder they only charge $39. You get what you pay for.

Using our custom-built, high-powered vacuum trucks, we run a variety of high-pressure air tools through each duct, including brush systems and power whips. We utilize a high-powered vacuum system and a much larger vacuum hose that is 8 to 10 inches in diameter, pulling 12,000 cubic feet per minute.

This powerful vacuum picks up everything and anything inside your air ducts from wood blocks, nails and drywall, to dust, germs, bugs, dead animals you name it.NOTE: One of the advantages with truck-mounted air duct cleaning units is that all the debris is vacuumed directly outdoors and filtered outside.

If you have allergies or asthma, you probably dont need any allergens or contaminants entering your breathing space! With our truck, the debris that the vacuum pulls out of your air ducts falls into a trap outside , while the air is released into huge filter bags on top of the vacuum truck outside!

According to NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association),air duct cleaning should be conducted every two or three years for a healthier home. However, homes withpetsor children with allergiesshould have their air ducts professionally cleaned more frequently than the recommended average.

Your home'sIndoor Air Quality(IAQ) is important, and having a clean, properly functioning heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system is vital to maintaining a clean healthy and comfortable living environment.

In addition, a newly cleaned air duct system runs more efficiently than a dirty one, resulting in lower utility bills and a cleaner, less dusty home.

Our air duct cleaning technicians check for dust, dirt, pollen, animal dander and other airborne contaminants that are pulled into your HVAC system every time the furnace or air conditioner runs. Over time, they build up inside your ductwork, making your air duct system a breeding ground for mold spores, bacteria, fungus, mildew and other microbes, which are then re-circulated through your home, impacting the health and comfort of your family.

Those who suffer from allergies, asthma or other respiratory ailments, especially children and the elderly, are vulnerable to the effects of indoor air pollution.

As a result, most health experts agree on the health benefits of proper, and regular, air duct cleaning.

COIT's specially certified technicians have the training and experience to remove harmful contaminants from your home. Our exclusive HEPA-Aire vacuum and Aire-Sweep compressor system pulls air duct pollutants into a contained filtration system so efficient that it is capable of capturing debris 1/300th the diameter of a human hair.

Why Clean Air Ducts? | National Air Duct Cleaners Association …

    Answer: Because they get dirty!

In addition to normal accumulations of dust and dirt found in all homes with air ducts, there are several other factors that can increase the need for regular HVAC system cleaning:

Some occupants are more sensitive to these contaminants than others. Allergy and asthma sufferers, as well as young children and the elderly tend to be more susceptible to the types of poor indoor air quality that air duct cleaning can help address.

NADCAs rule of thumb for consumers is that if your air ducts look dirty, they probably are, and that dirty HVAC systems should be inspected by a reputable, certified HVAC professional. Below are some other reasons homeowners choose to have their air ducts cleaned.

Indoor air quality is one concern that homeowners have when they decide to investigate air duct cleaning. Your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home. The system takes air in and breathes air out.

Through normal occupation in a home, we generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust, and chemicals. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated 5 to 7 times per day, on average. Over time, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work.

While dirty ducts dont necessarily mean unhealthy air in your home, school or workplace, they may be contributing to larger health issues or harboring contaminants that could cause serious problems for people with respiratory health conditions, autoimmune disorders or some environmental allergies.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. Although filters are used, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through normal use.

When an HVAC system is clean, it doesnt have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, less energy is used, leading to improved cost-effectiveness.
